  • Today we are installing the new BP-51 lift kit from Old Man Emu. Perhaps you have never heard of Old Man Emu (OME) but I am sure you have heard of their parent company, ARB. ARB is a massive company from Australia and has been making Off-Road products since 1975. In 1988 ARB acquired OME suspension one of the most advanced manufactures of suspension systems around the world. In 2015 OME release the BP-51 series witch offers the ultimate in both comfort and control.
    The BP-51 is one of the most advanced bypass shock absorbers today. Unlike most other manufacturers it allows on-vehicle adjustability of both rebound and compression. It also has massive advancements on the bypass design letting with a separate passage past the piston to the bypass reservoir. This results in the ability of the shock absorber to provide the best of both worlds. Letting you tailor your vehicle to your individual needs all while not sacrificing comfort.
    The BP-51 is vehicle-specific utilizing existing mounting locations witch means this installation is going to be quite simple and straightforward.
    Unfortunately, I didn't get any video of installing the reservoir on the front driverside. But Trail4r has a wonderful blog post about the entire install and covers that section great.

    Speaking from recent personal experience for anyone looking to buy the BP51 for front, even at the 5mm preload, unless you have a bumper, it will give you 3" lift (some distributor website call it a 3" lift, you should interpret this as the minimal amount of lift without added weight). At 5mm, with weight, it will be performing like a leveling, probably will go down to 2", but I set to 5mm, at factory front weight, it's a full 3".

    does the OME Upper control arm offer more clearance for the reservoir hose? your preload is at OME factory of 20mm, so the hose is angled downwards before it snakes/curves up, but I lowered my preload, so my hose is lifted up a bit, then as it runs under the factory UCA, there's a lot of bending...

    Loved the instructional insight on installing the 4RBP51MKP BP-51. I have several questions since I am used to wrenching on my old Land Cruiser and putting together a build on our 5th Gen 4Runner is a bit new for me. What load range (heavy or medium) did you install? Why did you have wheel spacers? Last. The spacer at the top of your strut... are you concerned with the suspension height limits imposed by your KDSS?
    In advance thank you for your insight into your build!

    • @SnailTrail4x4
      @SnailTrail4x4  Před 2 lety +1

      Heavy or medium only really matters what you're going to do to your vehicle. Are you going to add a large bumper and a winch (heavy) otherwise I'd do medium.
      The spacer on the top of the strut was to give it a little more lift (1/2")
      Wheel spacers are needed to clear the UCA and give it a good looking stance. But you need a body mount chop

    • @eddison50
      @eddison50 Před 2 lety

      @SnailTrail4x4 Thank you. I got medium for both 4Runners. The winch is going on my FJ40. I will have to mount the spare off the bumper, so I will be adding an aftermarket bumper. Otherwise, I am trying to keep things cloned and simple. No rock crawling in these, just very capable Overlanding vehicles.

    I have had BP-51s on my 17 runner with KDSS since 2018. I have had zero problems with them (and I havent been nice to them.) My only complaint is over time the adjustment has been getting harder and harder to rotate with the wrench. My guess would be this is from possibly years of road grime packing into the collars. all in all for the price and warrany they cant be beat. I'd suggest saving a buck and use SPC upper control arms instead of the OME branded ones.

They are refusing to warranty the part and I’ve had the system for less than 30 days. Makes you wonder how they will treat other issues that may come up with the suspension. Just buyer beware.

    After 5 months, I finally got my ONE BP51 suspension system and tires. I saw you have wheel spacers (1"?), I tried to get offset and backspacing information for the wheels I plan to go with. My first question was there a mechanical reason for adding the (1"?) Spacer with the stock TRD Pro wheel 17"x7" with a 4.51" backspacing and a -12 mm offset? Also I saw you used shims on your front struts to level the vehicle out. What thickness of shim did you use and where did you source them?
    Sorry for all the questions, but so far you are the only REAL resource that has installed the OME suspension. Just trying to make sure my learning curve is not fraught with wasteful mistakes in advance I appreciate your advice👍

    • @socercrze
      @socercrze Před 3 lety +2

      torqueing a bolt where two flat surfaces hit each other doesn't means anything with the weight of the car. If anything, you want to torque when there is the least amount of stress put into any of the items around it. You don't torque a head bolt when the engine is running, just like structural steel, the bolts assembling that don't get retorqued once the building is built. The Torque spec is based on the strength of the bolt, not the forces what will be applied to the surrounding metals, those forces dictate the size and strength of the bolt specified.

      @@allang9349 it does apply to the wheels themselves. You can torque and should torque them with the car off the ground.
