    Espresso tampers are by far the item that you interact with and need to trust the most in your home espresso routine. Whether you're using a Breville at 54mm, a Gaggia Classic Pro at 58mm, or other brands that use 51mm, having the right tamper can drastically improve your workflow and in some cases quality of espresso shot. In today's video, I show you two of my favourite espresso tampers from Ikape and Normcore, and explain why I think they're currently the best espresso tampers on the market.

    The Happy Tamper is a self-leveling palm tamper that doesn’t need adjusting for depth. It has dual springs, one for depth, one for pressure. So you press against light resistance from the first spring to the puck, then more firmly against the second spring to tamp. It’s the easiest and most natural one and peak tamper design in my opinion. And the tamp spring is even adjustable to give different tamping pressure. I believe different tamp plate sizes are available as well

    Thank you for the video. I've been wondering whether the tamper base makes any noticeable difference. I think convex bases were pretty common ~10 years ago, but now, I mainly see flat and rippled bases.
    Another question: do you recommend making espresso with these advent calendar coffees? I feel like the doses are so small that you basically have to dial them in on the first try. If that wasn't so difficult, I would love to get one.

    I'm a big fan of the Nomcore v4 (bought it twice, once in 54mm and once in 58mm). I find twisting the handle as you move up prevents any suction effect which gives you a clean base every time.

      @MaltePersike Před 4 měsíci

      Two additions:
      1. There is a new version of the Normcore tamper with a titanium coated base. From my own experience I can say that the sticking problem is much less pronounced.
      2. I also use the twisting method but not on the way up. I usually tamp down a second time until I feel the slightest resitence, then twist and release again. Works perfectly.

    one observation I will make between these two is that the normcore's business end is a bit lower profile than the ikape, which is better for avoiding disturbing the grounds too too much before the base makes contact with the portafilter rim. I can tell you rigth now my Barista express basket is filled to the brim with eh fluffed up ground coffee before it gets tamped, so the less faffing about I gotta do before the rim makes contact, the better

    I have the Normcore and the heaviest spring is very hard to compress completely - I highly doubt it's only 30lbs.
    CZcamsr Our Coffee Shelter did a Short where he used the different springs on a scale and the lightest spring (supposedly 15lbs) showed around 10kg - approx 22lbs. Isn't that more than enough tamping pressure?

    Oh man I wish I saw this in November!! ❤ I’m looking forward to next year now that I’ve found your channel with my new bambino plus and grinder I’m learning a lot. Thank you 🙏 I appreciate your videos and you 100% teach me amazing helpful skills and provide me with invaluable info. I always thought it was me /user error with the several ..yes several breville machines I’ve returned because my shots are not consistent and if I’m spending $1200cdn I just want a consistent latte!! I’m learning I need some access to help make my shots consistent. I’m still learning. But I just got the bambino plus and breville burr grinder to give it one more try for home espresso before I crawl back to Starbucks for 1-2 daily lattes. $$$ I know. I’m an idiot 😂. I hope to learn how to use this bambino over the next 2 wks consistently or it’s going back and I promised my boyfriend I’d never purchase another espresso machine and my quest for good home lattes is over. Fingers crossed I really need to learn how to do this. Any suggestions for videos to watch, accessories to purchase, any advice at all I’m welcoming to EVERY suggestion. Even if I need to change grinders or machines I have 2 wks to learn or end my quest. That was the deal. I do understand his frustration I’ve spent over a year on this so far I’m loose g this challenge big time, but I’m a stubborn one so I’m still hoping I can be taught and I will learn!! Cheers 🙏 thank you so much 😊

    I have a question regarding the Normcore tamper and your recommendation to use the heaviest spring. In your review of Normcore products from 2 years ago, you recommended the lightest spring. What changed?

    • @LifestyleLab_
      @LifestyleLab_  Před 6 měsíci +2

      What changed was the findings from my practical testing using the Decent and Cinoart PT2 which helped determine that there is no such thing as “overtamping” and that heavier tamps lead to greater consistency. A light tamp can still be useful to achieve more effective pre-infusion in certain circumstances

      Do you think a heavier tamp (or veering to the most compressed you can get a puck anyway) can help with light roasted espresso ? I'm struggling to grind fine enough for some seriously light coffee at the moment and achieving adequate pressure on my flair 58.

    • @LifestyleLab_
      @LifestyleLab_  Před 6 měsíci +1

      @jeffburling7224 the Flair 58 is notoriously difficult on grinders for the fine grind it requires. They’ve started selling them with lower flow baskets by default, if you don’t already have one, I’d recommend looking into one of those, and ABSOLUTELY avoiding precision baskets that generally increase flow rate further

    I'm a bit confused, on your previous video reviewing Normcore tools, you mentioned that you prefer the lightest spring for their tamper, which is the 15lbs one. In this video, you recommend to use the heaviest option available. Which one is the correct one?

    • @LifestyleLab_
      @LifestyleLab_  Před 7 měsíci

      Yes, at that time I was favoring lighter tamps because of how they allowed for effective pre-infusion on machines that might lack adjustability in that area.
      But since experimenting and making that whole video on tamping pressure my overall recommendation is to tamp as heavy as is comfortable. There's really no such thing as "over-tamping"

    I was shocked at how nice the tamper was that came with my ECM Synchronika. Now....if we can just get all manufacturers to include a bottomless portafilter....

      I mean… ECM is a different story, haha

    The ikape leaves a gap on the edge of my decent portafilter. Weird

      That is weird. What basket do you have in it??

    • @mrgazillions
      @mrgazillions Před 5 měsíci +2

      @@LifestyleLab_ the standard basket that comes with the decent. Thanks for your reply. Makes sort of sense as the sudden push may be like banging the portafilter against the grouphead. I have another force tamper knock off and same thing happens. No problems with the normal normcore that you have in your video. Maybe the simpler the better?

      @mrgazillions neither leave a gap for me, so I’m a bit hesitant to say the Normcore would solve your problem… it is technically a fraction of a millimeter wider.

      @@LifestyleLab_ I have the normcore and it is 58.5 and works fine. However I think it is the sudden forces that create the gap on the edges. I'll experiment a bit more...btw love your videos. They are great !!!
