- The Avro Lancaster PA474 of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight departing RAF Coningsby on the 4th May 2023 and is heading for Belgium and the Netherlands to perform a series of flypasts over the two countries. It is to commemorate Liberation day and Operation Manna. The 4th of May is the Netherlands' Remembrance Day and the Lancaster played a very important role in their liberation and was used in a humanitarian capacity. The Lancaster bomber’s weapons bay was carrying food and supplies for those in need.

The British operation started the first sorties of Operation Manna. It was named after the food which was miraculously provided to the Israelites in the Book of Exodus. The planning of the operation was initially done by the Royal Air Force.
The first of the two RAF Avro Lancasters chosen for the test flight, the morning of 29 April 1945, was nicknamed Bad Penny, as in the expression: "a bad penny always turns up". This bomber, with a crew of seven young men (five from Ontario, Canada, including pilot Robert Upcott of Windsor, Ontario), took off in bad weather despite the fact that the Germans had not yet agreed to a ceasefire. (Seyss-Inquart would do so the next day.) Bad Penny had to fly low, down to 50 feet (15 m), over German guns, but succeeded in dropping her cargo and returning to her airfield.

Operation Manna then began in earnest. British aircraft from Groups 1, 3, and 8 took part, flying 145 sorties by Mosquitoes and 3,156 sorties by Lancaster bombers, flying between them a total of 3,301 sorties.
The bomber crews were experienced with bomb drops from 6,000 metres (20,000 ft), however this operation was performed at a height of 150 metres (490 ft), some even flying as low as 120 metres (390 ft), as the cargo did not have parachutes. The drop zones, marked by Mosquitoes from 105 and 109 Squadrons using Oboe, were: Katwijk (Valkenburg airfield), The Hague (Duindigt horse race course and Ypenburg airfield), Rotterdam (Waalhaven airfield and Kralingse Plas) and Gouda. Bomber Command delivered a total of 6,680 tons of food.
John Funnell, a navigator on the operation, says the food dropped was tinned food, dried food and chocolate.

This Lancaster crossed my way when I was driving homewards today. I didn't see it coming, but suddenly there was a great roar of the four RR Merlins. It flew right above my car. I visited today my old father who was a little boy in ww2 and this was the sound he heared in his bed when the bombers flew above Holland at night and that sound gave him hope that the war will end.

Well on the Jubilee flypast last year it came back via Cosford very near to me.Flew straight over Shifnal to turn into finals for Cosford.Took off the following morning.

My dad was in the RAF based at Coningsby in the late 1960's before being posted to Scampton in the early '70's. I went past the gatekeeper Lancaster there many times.

This sight emphasising exactly what she means to many countries and particularly in the UK. Great memories tinged with sadness that so many young pilot suffered for us. With the glorious sound of Merlins thunder comes a gulp in the throat.. Respect! To all that flew in the world wars and to the pilots of todays. Lasting memory lives on in her!!

@@TedConingsby when we were kids my dad drove us all the way from deepest Somerset to Preston and the next day we visited an airfield to see an old Lancaster on the hardstanding. It was for sale I think and Dad was desperate to see it. We were all able to go inside and explore the gun turrets and clamber over the equipment left inside. I remember the smell, a combination of oil and leather. It was an unforgettable experience. I'm not sure, but it might have been the plane called Just Jane? I need to dig out the photos.
The sound of those engines though... reminds me of all the airshows we went to with my parents and the love my dad had for WW2 aeroplanes. I had to stop the car once while taking my daughter back to uni because I heard the Lancaster. I pulled into a layby and the Lanc flew over on her way to an air show on the south coast. A wonderful sight. Happy memories 😊
@@jojo1960uk wow I know exactly the smell you mean, that military smell, that aircraft smell and you’ve described this so well. NX611 is the serial for JUST JANE. She is at East Kirby, and there is a heritage centre where she is doing taxi rides. You can (for a fee) get a taxi ride. I have an old video of my having a taxi ride in ‘Just Jane’.
