There are a number of issues that could be to blame when your water heater isn't heating. You could have an issue with your power supply or a break in the wiring. One of your two heating elements could be broken, causing your hot water to run out faster than it should. Or you could have a broken thermostat. This video will show you how to safely check continuity on the various parts and wires inside your water heater so that you can find the correct part to get your system up and running.
    (0:00) Introduction
(0:16) Step 1: Make sure the water heater has power
(1:00) Step 2: Reset the high-temperature limit switch
(1:55) Step 3: Check the power supply wiring
(2:28) Step 4: Test for a short circuit
(3:48) Step 5: Check the upper heating system
(6:27) Step 6: Check the lower heating system
(8:15) Step 7: Check for breaks in the wiring

SEARS/Wayne: We're a couple of days from hosting Thanksgiving visitors and the water heater stopped working; this excellent presentation lead me thru a methodical checkout of our water heater; fortunately, I got off with just resetting the internal breaker [maybe something going out??]. All I know is, water is heated and my wife is glad that i can shower. Thank you for this public service.

We're glad to hear that our troubleshooting video helped. We hope that the water heater continues to work through the holiday. After the holiday, you may need to shut off power to the water heater and replace a heating element. You may also need to drain sediment from the tank if you haven't done that within the last year and the bottom heating element failed. Tank sediment could have helped cause the bottom element to corrode and short out which may have caused the overload to trip. Here's a video that shows how to drain sediment from the tank: www.searspartsdirect.com/article/how-to-drain-the-tank-on-an-electric-water-heater-video.html We hope this additional information helps and we hope you have a good holiday.
