This #diy video from Sears PartsDirect shows you what to do if your gas #dryer doesn't heat. Several things could be keeping your dryer from operating normally. You could have a broken flame sensor, gas valve coils, high-limit thermostat, operating thermostat, thermal cut-off fuse, thermal fuse, igniter or timer. This video shows a few easy tests you can run, including how to use a multimeter to check for continuity between these #parts and locate which component is causing the problem.
1. Check the gas supply.
2. Check the burner igniter.
3. Check the gas valve coils.
4. Check the components in the control circuit.
5. Check the high-limit thermostat.
6. Check the operating thermostat.
7. Check the thermal cut-off fuse.
8. Check the thermal fuse.
9. Check the timer.
10. Check the igniter.
11. Check the flame sensor.
If you made it all the way though and you still haven’t found a problem, you could have a defective motor centrifugal switch or a wiring failure in the heating circuit. You would need a service technician to check this out for you.

This is the clearest, most concise video on YT for dryer trouble shooting! Thanks a million!
This was one of the best get straight to the point video. This was geared towards people who have knowledge of how things work. I wish all other videos were like this because other guys get way to in depth and take 30 minutes to this. I loved it it made my life so much easier
This excellent video enabled me to fix my girlfriend's Kenmore dryer (same model as in the video) for $5.77 (thermal fuse) instead of $200.00+ that an appliance repair company would have charged her (incl $150.00 for simply showing up). She even considered buying a new W/D combo for $1,200.00+! I bought a multimeter for $6.00 and followed the instructions in the video. Simple! If I can do it you can, too! Thank you!
To be fair, trucks, gas, insurance, employees , and equipment, uniforms and benefits aren't free. There's nothing simple about sending someone to your home to help you
Excellent straight to the point, no stupid music, clearly shot, and in an order from easiest to get to to harder.
Logically organized and clearly presented. The steps begin with the easiest tests (least disassembly) and progress to the more difficult ones. Excellent!
This is such a great explanation! Please bring Sears back to its glory days!
The PERFECT video to diagnose a dryer problem...THANK YOU. Perfect step by step explanation of the parts and how to troubleshoot. Wish I had found this one before watching half a dozen other ones.
Thanks for the feedback. We're glad to hear that our video hit its intended mark in helping you understand gas dryer troubleshooting tactics.
For the 219th time, best repair video on youtube.
I wish there was a troubleshooting video this good for EVERY type of appliance. Great job.
Thanks for the encouraging words. We're continuing to work on many new appliance troubleshooting videos.
This guy crushes it as a service tech. They dont get much better
Great video to troubleshoot the issue with my dryer. Saved me a ton of time and money.
I've seen about 10 videos on this topic and this by far is the best one. Thanks so much.
This video is amazingly easy to follow, yet very thorough. Another video told me to replace the gas solenoids, but luckily I also watched this one and discovered I had a bad thermal fuse. You need a multimeter and a bit of familiarity with the ohmmeter function (I had help), but the fix was relatively easy, as far as appliances go. Thank you, Sears, for creating a perfect video.
Absolutely the best dryer diagnostic video out there. Great job Wayne! Thanks!
It WORKED! Dryer wouldn't heat. The igniter was fried. Changed that out, but it still didn't heat. Went around back and checked the thermal fuse. That was dead too. Changed that and got the dryer working on Mother's Day! Thank you for the EXCELLENT repair instructions!
I was able to fix my dryer that didn't have any heat after watching this (It was a bad thermal fuse). Thank you for such an excellent breakdown!
Fantastic video. Very clear instructions and comprehensive...more importantly, my dryer is back and working!!! Thank you.
This was absolutely the most straight forward, clearly articulated troubleshooting video I have ever watched. After watching, I had the game plan clearly in my head and had my dryer diagnosed in 10
Well done! Thank you.
Thanks for your comments on our video. It's rewarding for us to see that our hard work payed off and that you got the help you needed to diagnose the dryer failure yourself.
This is hands down the best dryer troubleshooting and repair video on youtube!

Replacing dryer belt
It sure helped me!
Yes amazing.
I need Wayne on all of my repair videos. He's excellent.
Thanks for the positive feedback. We're glad to hear that you liked the video.
7 years and still the best explanation, professor Wayne. Too bad Sears no longer exists. I would only add that a good cleaning solved issues with start/stop, incomplete drying and "sensor" dry not working when "timed" did. Cleaning = taking apart, removing/ vacuuming lint from everywhere (including under moisture sensor bars), cleaning bars, sensors and contacts with alcohol wipes (used carb cleaner for high heat one to remove carbon). While you're at it, replace the belt and pulley wheel. If that fails, all components in 2023 are less than $80.
Thank you so much for the video. Absolutely perfect. Right down to business and what to check. I replaced the thermal fuse, cleaned all out of lint and we're back in business. Much appreciated!!!!
This was a very helpful video. Got my dryer fixed and saved a lot of money.
Best self fix video on CZcams!
I've been troubleshooting and repairing my old Sears Kenmore gas dryer for almost 25 years now and I found that the burner valve solenoid coils can become weak over time. When this occurs there is not enough magnetism generated to hold the valve open and it will shut off. Just recently I had the flame ignite, burn for about a half minute, then shut off. I suspected the solenoid coils again; however, I had just replaced these only about five years ago. Turns out that the exhaust vent was completely blocked at the louvers outside the house. I removed the wad from the vent and now my dryer is back in service. Thank God I found this blockage and thanks to the manufacturer designed this machine to have temperature sensors in the dryers internal exhaust duct to monitor the temperature and shut down the machine if they sense a temperature above normal. We typically clean the lint screen; however, I had recently threw a bunch of burlap into the dryer after having washed it and I never experienced more of a mess than what this material made. I cleaned the lint screen and the next time I ran the dryer with normal fabrics in it is when the trouble began. A word of advise: don't run burlap in your machines. If you have the flame got out after a a short time, first check your vent for clogs as I had. You'll save a lot of time and money if that is the root of the problem.
Thank you for the video. I just replaced my two gas valve coils and the dryer works as good as new. $15.00 for the two new coils off Amazon and a little labor on my own part to change out the coils. You save so much money once you learn to take care of these issues on your own.
Amazing step by step video. Very clear, precise and simple explanations. Thank you for taking the time .
I agree that this is hands down the best dryer troubleshooting and repair video on youtube and I will keep this as a reference for future laundry appliance troubleshooting.
That was the most helpful video I've seen about gas dryers
Absolutely the best video on the subject! I have seen many of these and this is so thorough. Wish I'd found this years ago!!!
Best video. After replacing the wrong part twice I watched this and isolated the problem to the timer. Replaced it and we're rockin again. Thanks Wayne.
Thanks for the comment Craig. We're glad we could help!
I watched about 20 videos about gas dryer troubleshooting and this is the best one. Thank you
Best video on this. Another video said if dryer even starts up, it’s not the thermal fuse, thus I went on a goose chase, until finally simply testing the thermal fuse - and found no continuity. Geez Louise.
Thanks for letting us know what you found. We're glad to hear that you found the cause of the heating problem. Don't forget to check for an exhaust vent system restriction that may have caused the thermal fuse to blow.
This guy is the best! simple instructions that work. Save some money and do it yourself
This was a great video with all the sensors logically displayed. I loved both the end-to-end testing along with the testing of the individual sensors. I followed the procedures in the video and my Kenmore H3 is working again after experiencing problems with the gas heat cutting out after a few seconds.
This is the 5th video I watched on the subject, wish I'd have seen this first. This is the best video on this subject.
I agree! Really wish I started with this video!
Thank you for very clear instruction! Your procedure helps me troubleshot my Maytag Centennial (MGDC200XW2) dryer, which fail to heat due to the timer unit. Other CZcams site instruction on how to repair the timer helped me get the dryer back in working order in a weekend. Outstanding!!!! Ooh rah!!!
Cam you provide a link to the CZcams video that you saw about the timer repair? Did you have to replace the timer?
Thanks Wayne,
Because of your help, I was able to isolate the problem to the thermal cut off fuse. After replacing it, everything works fine.
Great troubleshooting tips!
*DON'T SKIP THESE STEPS WHENEVER YOU ARE IN THE DRYER, IF YOU'VE REMOVED THE FRONT SIDE(5/6" or 8mm wrench for bolt heads):
Be SURE to remove the drum and plain SILICONE SPRAY(not wd40!) both felt seals to the drum, AND oil(motor oil drops, whatever you have) both back drum free wheel rollers and the belt spring roller shafts!
Those things will last SO much longer now. I've seen those parts fail badly if you don't.
Really great video! Perfect for my 95 whirlpool dryer. It turned out to be the thermal fuse. You said the vent might be clogged. I'll check that but I think my gas flame is set too high because it's too-long much yellow flame tips so I'm gonna adjust that next. Thanks
Excellent, precise and easy to follow instructions. I'm off to get the coil thingys
Thank you for the instruction. I didn’t go crazy but ordering the gas valve coil and replaced them the next morning after they got delivered. My Kenmore gas dryer came back to back to life.
I loved Wayne as soon as he said "Hi" - this man inspires confidence! Great video in comparison to all others I've seen on this topic. Also, check the flue, bends, and the external trapdoor. Mine got filled with lint.
Most comprehensive repair guide I've ever seen. Well done!
This video is spot on, took me through the steps.....and boom, it was my Thermal fuse
Best troubleshooting dryer video! I love how you covered all. I was stumped on how to access the igniter and learned lots more. Thank you!
Thanks for the feedback. We're glad to hear that our video helped you.
Today I learned to fix my dryer from the sears wizard.
This is a great video - I should have started here. Found that wires were burnt open going to operating thermostat after changing more than a few components.
This is the best video out of all the videos on this topic and helped me fix my dryer at minimal cost.
Excellent diagnostic steps, pointed right at the specific fault; love that there was then a separate video link directly in the main video that outlined the steps to replace the Gas Valve Coils! Dryer works fine again!
This video is the best video by far. I love Wayne the “Service Wizard” and the production of this video. It is direct to the point and snappy. It has saved me about $200.
Thank you so much watched a few videos and no one explained it this thoroughly and simply. Finally found it was my thermal cut off fuse.
great video, ended up replacing the fuse and the dryer is good as new! Many thanks from Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Thank you so much. This guide really does help in troubleshooting gas dryers. I was able to tell my Gas Coil's had failed by watching this video. Replaced the Coils and my Dryer is working perfect once again!
We're glad to hear that you fixed your dryer and that our video helped. Thanks for letting us know what you found.
Couldn't ask for a better video. It helped me fix my dryer. Thank You!
GREAT JOB Thanks! Liked the Combined 'over all' check for easy elimination. ~ peace
Good lord …we need more great informative videos diy like this
Thank you so much for the video info.
Although it is an old video, it proved very helpful for me. My gas dryer died and the tips shared in the video led me to diagnosing the problem. $24 later for a broken part and my dryer is back up and running. THANKS!
We're glad to hear that you fixed your dryer and that our video helped.
Thank you! Fixed my girlfriends dryer for just $26. The video led me right to the thermal fuse. I could have ordered the part cheaper online but I wanted the job done quickly. And with a Sears Parts center just a short drive away I decided to pay over the counter instead.
This video was a great help!
Thanks for letting us know what you found (and for buying the part from us). We’re glad to hear that you got the dryer fixed.
Mine was the hi limit fuse, Probably overheated from vent being clogged up. I ordered all the back fuses for $10.00 from amazon and replaced it in 1 minute. Excellent video!
I agree. This guy is a great teacher and knows his stuff. just wish I had a Sears dryer.
Excellent!!!!Nice to have the links to troubleshoot other components. Mines a very different model but bet its the thermal fuse due to a long and poorly designed vent system.
best dryer diagnosis video ever. Thanks for taking the time.
Nice simple to the point video. Thanks
Excellent. Best diagnostic video. Was able to watch video and write clear concise troubleshoot instructions. Thank you very much.
👍🏻👍🏻 A logical presentation on dryer troubleshooting!
I love this video. So easy to follow and troubleshoot. Bought my first multi meter and was able to fix it. Easy enough for a noob like myself.
This guy makes it easy to follow directions. Shoulda been a school teacher!
Best video I've seen on dryer repair. Thank you Wayne!
♥
Very good video. Well explained. My dryer would start heating and the burner would shut off after 4or5 minutes and make a chattering/squealing sound when it was trying to relight. Turned out to be the coils.I changed them out and now it is back drying clothes again.
Excellent video! Wish I had seen it first before ordering my parts. :)
Wayne you are the Man! If I would of had more teachers like you in school I wouldn't of turned out to be such a dummy. Your explanation was clear, orderly and to the point. Thanks!
Thank u for this! A $6 part saved us hundreds of dollars!
thank you. watched the video and found the problem almost instantly (blown overtemp fuse). saved some major bucks.

Super helpful video....the graphics are great and Wayne is a great teacher. Workflow makes a lot of sense.
Thank you very much for his video, While my timer was not the same and I didn't know how to test the line of censors i took them one by one. Mine thermal fuse was bad. Installed a new one for $15 and the dryer is working again
Thank you a million times! Very very helpful!❤

Terrific video! This guy is a master and I would like to have him over for a beer! Fixed my dryer in no time!😁
I'm still in the shitter and haven't even made it to the dryer yet, but I really wish I'd have found this video first before the other half dozen that didn't actually explain how anything works and just had some guy randomly poking around with a meter.
Update: 15 minutes from start to finish (tools already on hand) I found a bad ignitor.
Going to order the parts from your site.
Thank you for sharing you knowledge with the world.
Thanks, fixed it!
He's not playing, get it working and subscribe like he said
Wayne, you rock! Great video - thanks!
