India is currently in the process of developing its own 72-seater aircraft.

  • India stands on the cusp of pioneering its aircraft development, a potential reality in the near future. With the Indian aviation market poised to become one of the world's top five largest markets, there's a burgeoning demand for carriers like Indigo, Air India, and Akasa. Together, they've placed orders for over 1400 aircraft from Boeing and Airbus, marking one of the highest orders in the aviation industry.
    'Made in India' passenger aircraft.
To transform the dream of a 'Made in India' passenger aircraft into reality and propel the local aerospace ecosystem, India requires a comprehensive National Aerospace Policy. The government has notably urged the establishment of final aircraft assembly lines (FALs) by Airbus and Boeing within India, driven by the substantial orders they've received.
India has exerted considerable pressure to establish assembly lines domestically, mirroring the success of similar initiatives abroad. With its aviation market growing at an unprecedented rate, India boasts the largest order book for new aircraft, estimated at a staggering $70 billion over the next decade. Existing airports bustle with travelers while new ones are either under construction or in the planning phase.

Chances are very unlikely in the next 80 years. A lot goes into trust, logistics, and spare parts supply chain, maintenance crew. It's easier for players to buy from established players. I worked on Saras project at a lower capacity. Can tell you the project has been stuck since 2005. Even a small modification on its propeller design takes 2 to 3 years to implement. A lot to blame on poor bureaucracy and over-analysis of parts and components. All this despite this was a piece of original soviet design of a similar Aircraft called the "Duet".

I'm not concerned about which political party government is good to boost defence PSU manufacturing. My concern is towards HAL, DRDO delays it's projects. The funnest thing about them is HAL & DODO takes up every project which comes to it's way, & announce timeliness to complete those projects. But due to unknown reasons they keep on extending timeliness of those projects which leads to great delays to complete them.

72/90 aircraft segment has very common design requirements and shouldn't take too long to materialize if we throw enough people at it ( in contrast to military aircraft, which are purpose built).
The governments in India have tonnes of money to throw at elections but not for R&D that achieves independence in the long run. If they really do not want to spend money, maybe they should coax Tesla or some other ambitious company and provide them with subsidies. You have to gain somewhere or the other. It should not be treated as a pet project.
Nuclear energy, aviation, defense manufacturing, semi-conductors, mass transit must be given priority if we were to save money.
