    I just love the way you're presenting here in this particular video (and the first part). If I may say so, your voice here is very calming and nice to listen to. The recommendations are outstanding, I didn't really connect to Armageddon when I first watched it a few years ago, but La Jetée was mindblowing and such a great recommendation.

    Surprisingly I don’t own any science fiction films from Criterion, so this video is very helpful to me. I think I’ll look into gettingThe Man Who Fell to Earth and The Blob for my first sci-fi Criterion films, just to sort of get a little taste of what they have to offer with sci-fi. So thank you again Daisuke for another great video. Also, if you haven’t seen Interstellar from Christopher Nolan, I think you may enjoy it. It’s very interesting and quite a spectacle to watch, like all of Nolan’s films. It’s just a very fascinating film to experience in my opinion.

      Yes, The Man Who Fell To Earth on Criterion is a bit hard to get without paying a bit of money for it. But there are other non-criterion releases that I think could be good. In any case, it is worth trying to hunt down because it is an unexpected film with so many surprises and David Bowie!

    I also felt the same way about Solaris when I first saw it. It was a little intricate at times and difficult to understand, but I mostly understood the main themes of the film. I agree with you on the themes of Solaris; it does have some very deep themes to it (I found it to be about the importance of human relationships, and our ability to succumb to our past memories). Overall, it's definitely a good movie for me to put in my collection.

  • @DungeonStudio
    @DungeonStudio Před 5 lety +3

    Really surprised you didn't mention Brazil. Which I'm sure many would classify as Fantasy Noir. But with all the gadgets and gizmos, guts behind the walls, and ducts feeding everything, I'd say that's sci fi right there. Solaris I admit I watched a bit of once and couldn't get into it. I was surprised to see the remake with George Clooney come out. And was thinking that might be easier watch, and may make me more appreciative of the Russian version. Have you seen the more recent? Is it faithful to the original? Easier or harder to take? And lastly, your Man Who Fell To Earth, that's the version without the book? I was so excited when Criterion issued that one, I think I was third in line when it came off the press. So surprised it went OOP so fast as well.

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 5 lety

      Good point about Brazil, though I think I don't immediately classify it as "science fiction" but I think I should.
      And regarding Solaris, when you say "faithful to the original" are you referring to the novel? While I have read the novel only once, I think that the newer version has elements that are closer to the novel than Tarkovsky's work. While I really love the new version, I think for me in the end the Tarkovsky film cannot be beat.
      As for The Man Who Fell To Earth, I only showed the digipack blu ray, but I do have other versions of it (the plastic case blu ray, the DVD with the book, and the laserdisc). Yes, it is a shame that it fell OOP.

    • @DungeonStudio
      @DungeonStudio Před 5 lety +1

      I was referring more to the original film, though the book sounds interesting as well. So would you recommend the Clooney version to watch first, then get into the earlier goods? Reminds me of the movie Sorcerer. It was okay, with a cool soundtrack. But when I got Criterions Wages Of Fear, that just blew my mind as you would say. So maybe same thing might happen with Solaris I wonder?

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 5 lety +1

      @@DungeonStudio, oh I see. Your story about Sorcerer/ Wages of Fear is a good comparison to make. Yes, if that is the kind of approach you are looking for, then, yes, perhaps it would be a good approach to watch the Soderbergh version first (which is really good I think) and then watch the Tarkovsky film.

    • @DungeonStudio
      @DungeonStudio Před 5 lety

      Wow, didn't even know Soderbergh did the remake. Definitely like his catalog! Was really amazed how Friedkin tried to retool Wages Of Fear to be modern day, with back stories, and gruelling stunts. Yet it doesn't seem to go anywhere? With Clouzots version, it's much slower and more methodical, and how that tension builds! So I'll definitely give Solaris a go that way, and get back to you with my thoughts on both. Due to finances currently, it might not be for a while though. ;-)

    So glad you ended with Solaris. I too fell asleep upon first viewing. Today, I cannot get enough of this film. Something about those reeds floating in that deep pool of water. I can never grasp why that scene gives me the chills. When the main character is seen staring at this pool of flowing reeds, I always get the feeling he see's himself as being like those reeds. Forever moving with that flow of life, unable to break free from the constant tide of human existence. When he arrives on Solaris and looks upon that never ending ocean planet surface, he will become like those reeds back on Earth. Forever trapped in Solaris never ending ocean of despair. So much has been written about this film. My take may seem trite, but that is one aspect always brings me back. Why does the main character look so deeply into that pool of reeds? I love this film.

    Hi dear Daisuke, I hope you're doing well
    I'm sorry, it may sound defective to say this here, I was wondering what your thoughts are on Alejandro Jodorowsky, Andrey Zvyagintsev and Ken Russel filmographies...do you think they're being snubbed by criterion or not? If you're a fan, then what are your favorites among them?

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 5 lety +1

      Oh, gosh, what a great question. First of all, while I don't necessarily see it as being "snubbed", I still think that it is undeniable that these directors have made films that are "Criterion worthy" (whatever that phrase means). I have seen Leviathan and it was very powerful and memorable. I should watch it again.
      As for Jodorowsky, I remember when I was living in New York, I went to the theater to see El Topo and The Holy Mountain. And in fact Mr. Jodorowsky was there to take questions, and it was amazing. He was so full of life and energy and you could tell he was so happy to see these films being released again after so many years.
      As for Ken Russell, I love his films so much. I know Women in Love is now in the Criterion Collection. But of course there is always room for more Russell in the collection. I think the one that has always been rumored (but I do not know how realistic this is) is THE DEVILS. If this can get a proper release by Criterion, I think I would be so happy.

      I think it's not the standard Criterion uses. Well I understand why the majority of people (including myself) will only 'mark' a film as a masterpiece if it's artistic, deep, meaningful, technically impressive, and influencing. Those are the films that will have above 90% in RT and the films that will get tons of analysis. But the thing is, to be criterion worthy, a film just needs to be exactly what the director wanted to be in the first place. And that's what Bay wanted in this movie. This movie doesn't pretend to be a deep or moving or emotional action movie, it is literally the epitome of classic over-the-top action that is just what bay intended to be. It isn't 'fake'. Another example is starship troopers but the acting in it is very ...... Wooden-like which really no directors will ever want the actors to do a bad job. Jellyfish eyes I guess is also a fun, kid sci-fi movie that's intended to be a fun, kid sci fi movie. I haven't seen it but I heard a lot of people saying that the acting is good and that it's enjoyable. So yea, criterion is putting up all the movies that define what cinema is. It is more about the director than about a viewer's standard of films
