All the pain, guilt, and misery that a man had buried deep in his mind through a lifetime of repression rushing to the surface in an instant; completely shattering the psyche. God damn
He pretended to be a Russian/Ukrainian anti semite to escape the harsh reality of what he truly was a Polish/Ukrainian Jew who likely had his whole family wiped out and did what he had to do to survive bc after the Nazis did the damage in Trachenbrod once apart of Eastern Poland the Soviets also did their mess and acted as Russian as possible to escape being persecuted for being a Jew by the Nazis then by either being a Jew or a Pole by the Soviets and when he went home the guilt took it’s toll on him
its said in the movie.... he made his peace with everything and with himself so there was no need for him to go back to his home.... its more like he was home again what he missed all the years....
i just watched this movie for the first time tonite. Thanku for posting this... such an incredible moving and beautiful part of the movie. Transendant and capturing the love. 🎇🎆💜
@SharikSobaka Thank you for that! I loved this movie ... so much humor ... and then your emotions go the opposite way .. its like this movie was divided into 2 parts for me ... but I always had unanswered questions about the grandfather
well see, the grandfather was "at war" with himself, like the old woman asked, if the war was over, and he paused, and said yes. What he meant by this is he was a jew and survived and ripped off the star of David so show that he wasnt a jew and just kinda left Judaism and the girl saw him. (when he was young) and thats why he didnt want to drive that "Zhed" at the beginning, but he heard Trachinbrod so he took him there. I lvoed this movie cuz im from Ukraine and i understood a lot. Lol!
@@ckarmaluk my grandfather who I never met was Jewish and I can't remember if he was born in America or emigrated but his parents definitely did from Russia to the US . I did not find out till I was almost 50 years old that my mother was half Jewish . My mother was never going to tell us and her brother got in a fight with her and said these kids have a right to know and he sent a letter to my brother .
I saw this film and was thrown back, it is a great film but I cant help but think how much more of an impact it would have had on me if I had understood it, im confused.... why does Alexander (grandfather) kill himself in the end??? I have my opinion but Im not sure its correct. and if he was part of the people in that town. how is it he had no idea where it was and they spent all that time looking for it?? can someone please clarify my confusion and then some....?
He hid his identity as a Jew for decades when he escaped what was occupied Poland and going back what is now Wołyn in Ukraine and seeing his Jewish past as well as someone from his village who also survived made the survivors guilt get to him. Many WW2 vets and even holocaust survivors ended up committing suicide later in life due to survivors guilt and that’s what the grandfather did. His whole village and the surrounding areas was killed off and deported by the Nazis and Soviets and he hid his identity as a Polish Jew and posed as an anti semitic Ukrainian and relocated to Odessa to survive.
ahh!!! the grandfather was my acting coach!!! ah. Boris, I miss him so. It hurts to see him sad in this..

This is such a moving and amazing movie, this made me cry and laugh. Great film.
perhaps in coming home he found peace? Maybe he felt guit about surviving when every one else died?

Your last name "Karmaluk" is also from Ukraine origin. "Кармалюк" in Cyrillic

can someone explain why grandfather kills himself? I've seen the movie several times, and I don't think I caught it.
He was a Jew, and he was able to survive while everyone else didn't because he hid his religion. He felt huge regret in that.
they didn't call it the Holocaust for nothing
