I've lived in England for most of my life but my family are very traditional Polish chaps... this scene is so relatable whenever I go see them. also a really great film with a brilliant soundtrack.
I don't know why but this clip is so hilarious to me. Also it's from a really great movie. Don't watch it unless you're prepared to cry. Pretty deep stuff.
The first time I watched this movie, I had no idea that Alex is Eugene from Gogol Bordello. Not until the credits, anyway. Great band and a great performance by Mr. Hutz.
This reminds me of when I became a vegetarian. My parents were very supportive, but they had a hard time realizing that vegetarians don't eat fish, sasuage and hamburgers.
To everyone who need translation (ukrainian only A-Alex, G-grandpa, C- cook): 00:24 A: grandpa, he says that he does not eat meat. G: whaaat? 00:39 A: grandpa, he says that he doesn't eat meat. G: even sausage? A: I did say it. G: what's wrong with him? Is he sick? 1:00 A: hello. Could you give me something to eat without meat? C: for what? A: our friend, he is american. C: I see it (like she is not blind and saw him as a foreigner) A: yes indeed, but he doesn't eat meat. C: is he sick? 1:27 A: do you have potatoes? C: potatoes are served with meat only. A: american is here on a trip. Can you get him one potato without meat? Grandpa and cook assumed that Jonathan does not eat meat beacuse he is sick and is trying to recover after sickness. They do not realise that he is avoding meat on purpose. XD
This is the reality in most of the world. Vegetarians usually confuse or insult people by refusing their food. Very few places are vegetarian-friendly. It's a choice that people in extremely wealthy countries can make. Also, great movie.
I appreciated his thoughts, Alec. Me I love these nuance differences in cultures and people. Being raised in America, this appreciation comes naturally I suppose.
@casperado666 Yes it is, but there is a lot of meat in Slavic cooking. So it makes sense that they would be confused by a vegetarian. I know my Russian friends had no clue.
Lol. Awesome movie. Im glad somebody made a movie like this. There should be more like this. Russian culture is awesome & almost opposite to American culture.
Actually i both love the taste and being in the presence of a living animal... it makes me sad when I think of an animal dying. I just like the taste to much for that to influence what I eat.
@Zayandeh38 If that is the case, then why don't wealthy Indian people immediately turn meat-eater? Maybe it's because they are vegetarian by CHOICE and not just because of having or not having money!
@Bookcat16 but guns weren't granted to us by some extra-terrestrial power. We made guns, from the materials we extracted from the environment. There is no "fair and unfair" in nature. Tiger has an advantage in weight, speed and claws - would you call that "unfair"? we have advantage in our uncanny ability to modify our environment to suit our needs.
@leexag I agree that there is no 'fair and unfair' in nature, but humans have the capacity--and I think any decent person would agree the responsibility--to be ethical. Ethics demand that we not cause unnecessary harm to others. If we live by the "laws of nature" then it's acceptable to kill, rape, steal, and do whatever we like to others. Humans, because of our intellect, can move beyond this Hobbesian nightmare to reduce suffering for all with the capacity to experience it.
@AlainWinthrope That's part of the population of one country. Doesn't change the fact that for most people in most places, refusing to eat meat is not a consideration or an option. I'm not saying that its a problem to be vegetarian, but you can't go into someone's home in places I've been in Latin America and Central Asia and say, "no thanks, I don't eat meat." People will be offended. But I know, you're too superior and important to be bothered with such barbarians.
@Bookcat16 I don't think that domesticated animals should be killed but as for wild animals.... survival of the fittest. us killing a deer is like a lion pouncing on a gazelle. You don't see any lions being vegetarians do ya? Didn't think so?
Dude, I'm from Ukraine. I speak both Russian and Ukrainian. I can assure you the language they are speaking is Russian. There's East Ukraine and there is West Ukraine. The East speaks mostly Russian while the West speaks Ukrainian.
This picture show is premium comedy!

It's weird seeing Eugene Hutz without his mustache.
Poor Sammy. Why couldn't they have given him Jonfan's meat? He looks hungry.

Some subtitles would be nice.
Actually i both love the taste and being in the presence of a living animal... it makes me sad when I think of an animal dying. I just like the taste to much for that to influence what I eat.

I beg to differ.
@Zayandeh38 If that is the case, then why don't wealthy Indian people immediately turn meat-eater? Maybe it's because they are vegetarian by CHOICE and not just because of having or not having money!

no its Ukrainian, its just HEAVILY Russian influenced, its Odessa (allegedly) so theres going to be alot more russian influence than if it were kiev
@casperado666 after a week and a half in Ukraine, the way I imagine their cuisine is dill, dill, dill, dill and more dill.
I think it is meant to be an american's view of Ukraine, how he sees the things that are happening to him and his surroundings...
@AlainWinthrope That's part of the population of one country. Doesn't change the fact that for most people in most places, refusing to eat meat is not a consideration or an option. @casperado666 until I have actually been to your country, I would never judge
This is about making fun of a vegetarian, and i have been there! Cheers!
Its too bad they don't have subtitles. The Russian makes it funnier...
@Bookcat16 I don't think that domesticated animals should be killed but as for wild animals.... survival of the fittest. us killing a deer is like a lion pouncing on a gazelle. You don't see any lions being vegetarians do ya? Didn't think so?
One can tell its after the fall of USSR...as they have meat!
Dude, I'm from Ukraine. I speak both Russian and Ukrainian. I can assure you the language they are speaking is Russian. There's East Ukraine and there is West Ukraine. The East speaks mostly Russian while the West speaks Ukrainian.
