    i love this effect, where it seems like a face or an object is LOCKED in one place on the frame, as thought the camera is attached to it. made famous by the beats by dre commercial. well for the longest time, you had to either do this manually in FCP, install a plugin (that rarely worked), or hop over to after effects. BUT THEN, apple released the tracking feature with final cut 10.6 - and the more i thought about this effect, i realized that a simple mirror of the footage, with that footage motion tracked to whatever object you want to lock, would create the effect!
    i hope this helps! thanks for being here!

      Well, the basic idea is to track motion in the inverted clip, so the tracker contains motion coordinates of the background, not the foreground. The motion coordinates of background and foreground add up to zero (if one moves left, the other moves right, relative to each other).

    Just jumping and being that guy- "overcranking" actually refers to your frame rate only and only when your camera is recording at a rate above your project's frame rate with the intention of adjusting it later. Such as a 24fps film using slow motion shot at 120fps but then slowed and incorporated to 24fps. However, this was a fantastic explanation and I liked it a lot. I'm just a terminology dork :)

    • @RCodyWanner
      @RCodyWanner  Před rokem

      very true! in college we overcranked on our 16mm Bolex and then it would come back from the digitizer in slow mo -- loved that. i would like to humbly posit that the term has evolved as the tech has, and though it originally meant literally turning the crank on a film camera faster than the film was going to be projected, we can now use the term "overcranking" to refer to anything that is faster than it should be for the situation... as long as we are specific about exactly what we are over cranking 😄, in this case, the shutter

    Thanks for the tips..definitely weird stuff that I don't totally understand in terms of why certain things are working the way they are, but my biggest question is, where do I make adjustments and on which clip if something seems too rough? Im making manual adjustments on the bottom clips tracker but none of my changes are reflecting on the final result. nothing I change anywhere really seems to be showing in my results..any thoughts?
    EDIT: I figured out I have to just re-analyze the motion tracking, but it works so fast and sporatically. Is there a way to just manually fix a few frames without it having to re-analyze automatically? its hard to keep up with it and it risks messing more stuff up

      you can do this, yes! Apologies for the delay in my response. Here is a quick unlisted tutorial on ow to do it czcams.com/video/HRAw9eErOdQ/video.html - to summarize, once you have stabilized the clip, select the top-most version of the video in the timeline, go to the area that you want to manually correct, and add a keyframe on the X & Y axis - then hit the transform modifer over in the viewer (bottom left) and manually readjust the video file to be sticking to the spot you want it to be (in the tutorial, I use a red x to help me see where I want the object to be sticking)

    This is great! How does it work or does it work if you leave your clip in landscape orientation? Do you have to punch in real close to the subject you want to track or is that necessary to get the almost 3D looking effect you have here?

    • @RCodyWanner
      @RCodyWanner  Před 2 lety +3

      it’s just using the motion of the object and telling the clip to move in that very same way - but since we mirrored it, it moves in the exact opposite way - canceling out the movement completely. landscape is fine yep! you only need to punch in as far as necessary to make sure the clip doesn’t track out of the frame - if you center tracked the object while shooting super well, you’d only have to punch in a little

    Nice video! Is it also possible to only track on the X axle, so if an object is going up and down, this motion is not tracked, only left and right movement? So in your video: the camera would not follow you head up and down, but only left and right

    How do I do this tracking in only a portion of a clip? Like, if I want to track a basketball player shooting the ball, I want to get the play before hand, and as soon as he releases that ball, the ball is being tracked. Is there a way to be able to track a portion of the clip?

    • @RCodyWanner
      @RCodyWanner  Před 10 měsíci

      yes, the key is to slowly key frame the ball to the center of the frame during the lead up, then it is in position once you are ready to track it. cut the clip there, and follow this method, then make sure the frame of the last clip, and the first frame of the tracked clip, line up perfectly - let me know if i explained it well enough, if not i'll make another tutorial (i'm sure other people have the question)

    Great vid! Overcranking is having a higher frame rate, not a higher shutter speed.

    • @RCodyWanner
      @RCodyWanner  Před 9 měsíci

      imo, you can overcrank anything - the iso, the shutter, i guess not really the f-stop. so "overcranking the shutter" is having a quicker shutter speed than you should... but yes, overcranking, from the days of shooting film, is capturing a higher frame rate than is going to be projected
