Chad Kremer is a character out of central casting as a bison rancher! Humans have been raising grazing animals for thousands of years. Fences are a recent innovation and ranchers have figured out how to manage. Great profile with some fantastic shots. Bison are an American icon. 🦬
I absolutely agree with the point on field harvest where I have operated I feel harvest truck in the past reducing the stress on the animal is so much more humane and without the over abundance of adrenaline and cortisol, the meat comes out much better. They don’t need stress the stress.
"Oh, you can't roller skate in a buffalo herd You can't roller skate in a buffalo herd You can't roller skate in a buffalo herd But you can be happy if you've a mind to..."
In Montana in the early 1970s, my uncle had a bison bull that could jump 5-wire fence from a standing start and liked to butt heads with his Hereford bull. No problems with the bison except that you could not really fence it in.
99.99% of these animal's lives are as good as is possible for them... (cared for, protected from disease, harassment, predation, etc.)... and a quick & relatively painless exit when compared to what nature would most often provide. I don't see any ethical problems here (5:00); if anything, we should feel obliged to support this sort of animal husbandry and dietary system.
I don’t have bison. I have carabao or Filipino water buffalo. They have a guar I’m told, that is massive. I enjoyed your bantering with your bulls. I only have cows. They like to moo at us and like squash and pumpkin. A fun life.
There is a book thats called a roman spectacle on the rio grande thats all about crazy animal fights around the 1900s and one of them was between mexican fighting bulls and a buffalo, if im remembering correctly the buffalo killed 2 of the bulls and scared the other one so much he couldnt fight anymore lol great book tho
Look it up in history . There was a time when some Texans and Mexicans tried setting up a fight between Bulls and Bison and were making bets on it . Interesting history .
basically american bison, range cattle, and even cape buffalo are not so different. Bison have been known to attack elk at a feeding station. During a drought cape buffalo have been known to drive humans and other animals away from a source water. But maybe the bull in the case at hand is close enough species relationship wise to be tolerated by the bison bulls. American bison today are often hybrids with domestic cattle anyway. I am most impressed with the owner approaching those critters on foot.
Bison and cattle=two different animals. One is indigenous to this area the other isn't. One is by nature before the european invasion a migrating animal. As for that bull. When it comes times for the rut. One of those bison bulls will be sure to make sure that bull needs to be separated from the bison herd. Hybridization is slowly but surely being bred out of bison. Beef meat compared bison is like Spam compared to a porterhouse. Grass fed bison is among the sweetest meat you'll ever taste.
Nope -- not if they are from a disease-free herd or have passed through a 2-year quarantine. Elk on the other hand are well known to transmit brucellosis to cattle (and probably Bison as well, but it is not well documented). In contrast there is no documentation of brucellosis transmission from cattle to Bison or vice versa.
Cost A gate is a couple hundred dollars and can be installed in an hour or so. A cattle guard takes a lot more effort. For gates that are used infrequently it is not worth the effort. This rancher is rotating the herd into different pastures regularly, so a gate is not used that often and can be left open when no cattle are in the paddock.
Have you ever tried to mate a buffaloes with beef? Is it possible? And what would that do to the meat in cooking and taste as buffalo meat is way more less marbled and dryer then beef.
About 1/2 of wild bison in YNP are positive for brucellosis. In order to farm bison in your state you will no doubt have to prove they are not infected. Elk and especially wild boar/pigs are the most likely sources these days.
The disease issue is a bacterial disease that causes abortion in both species (and undulant fever in people that drink unpasteurized milk from an infected animal). In most states both beef and commercial bison herds need to be certified free from this disease. If both cattle and bison are free from this disease there is no valid commercial reason for the herds to not mix. In any case, even in Montana where the cattle producers use the presence of this disease in wild Bison herds in Yellowstone National Park to block introduction of wild Bison into public lands in Montana such as the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Reserve, there is no documentation of transmission of this disease from bison to cattle, but plenty of evidence of its transmission from Elk to cattle.
In any case, I'd bet that a bull of a large race of cattle could take on a bull of a smaller race of African Buffalo, such as those found in West Africa and in the western foothills of the Ethiopian Highlands.
Most likly bull got taust through the air like a rag doll. Depends on the size. Bulls size isnt nothing to full size bison. They kill each other over smell of blood.
I'm not a rancher ,but grateful we have people who maintain some of our heritage, thanks
Total respect and care for his animals, that's all that can be asked of him..from the UK
Bull:“ I IS THE BOSS!!!“ Buffaloes:“Ey, Warren, you gonna tell him, or should I?“ „Meh, let him go, Clem. Let’s not burst his bubble.“
BEAUTIFUL ANIMALS ❤
I was rather suprised that he vould get so close to the bison. The bull, "moofie" almost seemed affectionate or friendly. Very interesting...
Weekly hand feeding treats since a baby and knowing to be alert during breeding season…..
When you associate with animals on a daily basis they will trust you.

In Germany, it is said that animals and owners become more and more alike over time.
The beard is also very impressive👍

I totally agree that this is the best way. to harvest for both man and beast. It respects the animal that feeds us.
Love them creatures ,, thank y’all . 🙏
I always love seeing bison. We had them when we lived in Oklahoma and I get to see them when I go to Sturgis.
A well done and informative video. Thank you.
Those are some great looking bison 🦬
Very interesting! I love the buffalo, such an iconic beast of the Wild West.
Bison r magnificent
Good to see you're still at it Chad.
Excellent video!! Thank you!
Bison are very smart animals. They are similar to horses in intelligence.
"Oh, you can't roller skate in a buffalo herd
You can't roller skate in a buffalo herd
You can't roller skate in a buffalo herd

Ray had the funniest songs.
@@mkjohnson7826 That was Roger Miller.
wow how many people get to feed a bison straight from their hand!
In Montana in the early 1970s, my uncle had a bison bull that could jump 5-wire fence from a standing start and liked to butt heads with his Hereford bull. No problems with the bison except that you could not really fence it in.
I’ve had some of his buffalo meat before oddly enough. Good stuff.

Loved this!
I learned early as a kid sit in the middle of the truck. Door riders had to open and close gates.
Claimed the cowboy seat for sure. Don’t have to drive or open the gate!
The music reminds me of the Pow-Wows they have up at Minot State University when the tribes use the buildings.
Nice video. Great herd
That’s the best looking mustache Ive seen in a while
Love you folks. Respect ❤.
Cool ... glad boys be boys ...

Oh dang, I was watching this and wondered if he named any of them. Moofy best not be processed LOL. Great vid and good on him. :-) Respect
I know media people will tell you that you have to have sound track, but I hate that crap.
Beautiful countryside!! Buffalo see😊m to intimidate me! They are beautiful majestic animals!
Moofie wanted a treat. Poor Moofie.
Are you doing Beefalo? When I worked cattle in Washington state we had a lot of that going on.
Interesting. How do they compare to beef.
And great on the BBQ
Basically most people like the beefsteak. But don't like the cow pie.
What will happen if INDIAN GAWA REDA meets bison 😂

Where is the part where the bull got in with the bison
7:55
I’m curious about that whitish blond bull, looked like a cross between highland and something else.
I wonder what a bison burger tastes like probably pretty good
Like beef, only leaner.
Do you cross breed with any beef breeds?

Why 4H has the sale after the fair .
Meet my neighbor is great!
My husbands cousin owns over 1,000.00 bison.
What time mark showed the bull getting in with bison?
Bull lives with the Bull Bison .. gets along just fine.

Why not use cattle crossings?
Hmmm...
Now That's a damn good question...
I don't know... ☆

I drive past the Durham Ranch in Gillette Wyoming quite often. I love it when the bison are out.

Yes it’s called beefalo
@@user-lo6dv8vc1g Is there a taste profile on the beefalo???
Grass-fat beef is pretty similar to grass-fat bison, but the bison fat is yellow.
What happens when a bull gets in with the bison cows ???

I didn’t think you were supposed to graze cattle with bison? Isn’t there disease issues?

The bison get brucilocious??
Yes -- and so do elk, cattle, camels, ..., and people (where it is called undulent (sp?) fever).
