Changing Paradigms | Regenerative Agriculture: a Solution to our Global Crisis? | Full Documentary

  • Tom’s Outdoors is based in Tumut nestled in the Snowy Valleys, enclosed by Kosciusko National Park and rural farmland. Our home in the outdoors is our lifeblood and the lifeblood of our beloved home is agriculture. The climate crisis concerns us deeply and we are passionate about the longevity of our rural country town and its neighbours.
“Changing Paradigms” explores the power of regenerative agriculture in improving the natural environment, human health, and reliable profit in sheep farming. We, as humans, have an innate attraction to the natural world. But, the way we currently interact with the environment is unsustainable and causing a disconnect with nature. We have one generation, our generation, to take action and change the paradigm.
Charles Massy (author of “Call of the Reed Warbler”) and Norm Smith both take a sustainable, systems thinking approach to sheep farming. They have moved away from industrial practices of land clearing and using chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Now they work with nature rather than against it, in turn, reviving the once over-grazed land. The power of regenerative agriculture is even greater than improving the profitability and resilience of family farms, the implications on planetary and human health are tremendously positive.
Filmed and directed by Henry Smith

Introducing protozoa, beneficial microbes (from Graeme SAIT) , adding vermicast from self managed worm farm. Adding humates with all granulers, adding fulvic acid with all liquids. My old Grandfather told me years ago that we are custodians of the land, that's all, as it will be there long after we are gone. So if you ever purchase land , make it as fertile as you can for the next generations. Don't just have one type of animal using it and grow all different kinds produce and trees.. This is not something new, it is just more people are realizing that pesticides & herbicides are not really needed which saves them money straight off the back.. Well done, keep up the good work.

I have been using this same thinking for years now. We use what we need to for our rabbits, chickens and ducks and get them onto a new patch of natural grazing within the week.
We're seeing the results already. This lot was traditionally farmed (sprays and whatnot) before we purchased it. Now, three years on, deer come to graze our pasture. Not our neighbors to the north. Not our neighbors to the south.
One of those neighbors asked why the deer aren't afraid of us. I told him they are afraid of us but our pasture is so much better tasting and nutritious, compared to yours, that they are willing to risk it.
He laughed and said I was full of crap but still the deer graze my lot. Not his.
They spray. I don't. The deer tell me who's correct.

A couple of acres is full of fruit trees , shrubs , plants etc. our sheep and 4 cows run on the rest with out fowl. Looking forward to turning things around over the next few years.
Of note, we have started to get more thistles ( look similar to the ones you showed) our Dorper sheep absolutely love them and are expecting a large drop in thistles next season. As they eat them before seeding.

When you live in poverty, and the only food available is the worst type for our planet, that is the food that is purchased. Being in poverty then impacts health care, as does the poor food quality. When a message of hatred is spewed nearly 24/7 on news networks, convincing you that you have forces trying to control you, it is easy to want to escape in whatever way works. Deliberate corporate decisions are made in the interests of profit --- even if they know that, like a parasite, their product is deadly.
Several years ago I thought up a clever sentence for the fly-leaf of a novel I was writing. At the time I thought it was a profound statement/sentiment... but now I see it as being the norm for humans
The heros of my book, trying to turn back the destructive tide of climate change, say that they wish to eliminate the power of the darkest forces on the planet, those who put the needs of their power over the needs of their progeny.
Alas, that seems to be the natural state of mankind.

All good ideas that work as u work in sync with how the Good Lord designed this planet. Balance being key. A variety of fauna & flora goes to breed up birds, insects & biological activity that brings this balance.
What I have added to this mix is placing my Maker as my manager. I look for guidance from above in all things as I do not know what the future will bring, only He does.
Also I have intergrated organic farming principals with finding people who wish to build a small community around the farm.
This is not easy for honesty & a moral standard are needed for that to be achieved.
Yet with guidance from above this is being achieved.

It seems to me that some farmers are literally over focused on the top line and the bottom line. They don’t put enough focus on the bits in the middle - the cost of labour, fertilisers and pesticides.

So good to see Love it. I work in Zambia teaching conservation agriculture. Now looking at how we might bring in the components of regenerative agriculture that could be adopted in context of the local traditions and cultural environment. There has to be a change in paradigms here.

It amazes me that we humans know very little about soil given that is where it all began for our civilization. Follow the path of degraded soils and you'll learn plenty of history. The solution is the soil and always was.

I was just in Belize learning of a similar tale. The fall of the Mayans may have many factors, but deforestation and soil degradation are thought to be a large part of it. The article below is from a study from 2012, and while on a tour of Zunantunich (on the border of Guatemala and Belize) they mentioned the difference in land management. You can literally see the deforestation in Guatemala. Time will tell how that goes unless someone can convince them to turn it around. It was really interesting to hear local Belizians know much about their land and echo what's in the literature.

@@justiny5385 Thx for the link. Here is a video about guano and Peru, where guano was the fertilizer of choice prior to the 1900's. It was know as white gold. This quest for white gold set America on a path towards world superpower. Also the degraded soils of the 6 colonies helped drive the expansion westward in search for new agricultural lands.

I have spoken to plenty people and am encouraging them to source healthier food! And to grow their own greens!
Absolutely loved how you showed the two fields next to each other - one holding water and the other topsoil gone.

Fantastic, don't know why it is so hard for people to get their heads round it.It simplifies everything and makes life so much easier but you do have to put your own brain into gear and think for yourself which many people seem to have forgotten how to do. Simple things like good soil being a huge carbon sink as is wool. Holistically grazed animals emit less methane also ( include people in this group!!)
