How to Cut Flagstone (NO DUST!!)

  • In this video, I share the fastest and easiest way to cut flagstone. In my last video about how to install a flagstone patio (watch it here: • How To Install A Flags... ) I used a 4-inch angle grinder to cut the flagstone.
    That was a mistake! It took forever and vibrated the crap out of my hands until they were numb.
    So in this video, I share a much easier method that will save you a ton of time, reduce dust dramatically, and just make your project more fun.
    Whether you are installing a flagstone patio or a flagstone walkway, you'll inevitably need to make some cuts. So watch the video to learn the best way.
    ***** Tools *****
    4" Angle Grinder with diamond blade: amzn.to/2ItN2Xw
    Stihl concrete saw with water feed
    Really, any kind of circular saw will work to cut flagstone as long as you have a diamond-coated blade on that saw. But, the larger the diameter of the blade, the faster the cuts will go. So in this case, bigger is better.
    In some cases, you can use a hammer and a chisel to cut the flagstone. But, that only works with certain types of flagstone (they aren't all the same).

    Good video, i would recommend a corded 230mm grinder instead tho, i used those larger grinders before and can be quite a chore to keep starting n shutting off the engine, and theyre not super good on fuel. A corded larger grinder instead of the 125mm size grinder will also cut very fast, and wont have to worry about starting and lugging around a heavier tool

      Ball another comment recommends an electric 305mm grinder from Amazon. Do you think the extra 70mm would be worth it for speed or do you think the maneuverability of the 230 would be better?

      But… you make a ton of heat and dust..(no wet kit for an electric grinder) so the blade doesn’t last and you need to “ saw” the smaller wheel back and forth

    This helps a lot. I’m doing small step’s in my backyard on a slight hill. My pieces will be thinner. I have a mitre saw and that should work.

      That’s not flagstone and the running joints continuously everywhere is considered a golden sin as far as stone masonry goes.

    Wow, this was really helpful. I was trying to cut through the whole width like with a wood saw. My markings were washed away and my cut ended up being off square. I am going to try marking with a silver sharpie or scoring and then make a cutting groove like you did and see if I can get better results. I agree with the last post the the gas model you used is a bit unwieldy for me but it does cut right through the stone.

    One year later, what’s your recommendation on best tool for flagstone pathway/patio cutting? Do you still recommend the 14” rental or do you agree with the comments that a 9” grinder or 12” saw are the better ways to go?

    bro what about a circular saw with a masonary blade? Have you tried that before? You know like a skillsaw?

    • @WalterPidgeonsForge
      @WalterPidgeonsForge Před 2 lety +1

      It CAN work but is best done with a worm dive or helical gear saw, because you need the torque.. Also… only safe to use on a stone that has a flat surface for the saw to ride on.. since when the saw plate tilts on the stone it binds the blade and makes stress fractures in it from flexing.. like using a table saw to crosscut a knotty branch.. not a great idea.

    Handymen shouldn’t do stone or really any masonry repairs, why? Because there is very often not a quick repair for masonry! That’s called a tail light special ! Leave it to the pros

    The angle grinder makes less dust than the concrete cutter when both are used dry.

    • @StayHandy
      @StayHandy  Před rokem +1

      Yes, but both tools create a ton of dust so “less” is irrelevant.

      I worked in a rock quarry for 22 years. It's not as deadly as they say. Don't spread fear, spread truth. You wear a mask, but unless you are doing this daily...it's not that dangerous.

    • @BallBallBallie
      @BallBallBallie Před 4 lety +1

      @@rarefossil2670 Yep, there are people out there who dont wear masks and grind in heavy dust often and dont have any problems even at older age. But its just the risk you want to take. If ur planning to grind often it isnt much work to leave a mask around ur neck u can throw on for each cut. But yeah, if grinding isnt part of ur job, im sure you would be fine as u said lol
