In fact, Freddy Mercury was a big fan of Montserrat Caballé, and he had the dream of singing with her. And, when Miss Caballé knew about it, and listened Freddy's music, became inmediately a Freddy's fan too. If you watch some interviews of them together, you can see the great love that Freddy had to Montserrat.

When she heard this rock star wanted to meet and possibly sing with her she asked her people what could I have in common with this rock star. Their people set up a meeting. Freddie so impressed her with his musical knowledge that they talked through the wee hours of the morning

Monserrat Caballé is in my opinion the best opera singer of all times. She was the idol of Freddie Mercury before he started his career. Singing with her was for him like a miracle, a dream came true (in his own words)

Not sure how this version started
Mike has explained in interviews they weren't asked to do a song for the olympics
      Freddie and mike wrote Barcalona
When it was recorded her brother who was invilved with organising the olympics put it forward and it was chosen
Freddie hadn't wrote it for that

Freddie Mercury was a great admirer of Montserrat Caballé, one of the most famous opera singers in history, which meant that when they met in person they became great friends. As a result of their friendship, Freddie proposed to Caballé to sing together, and since Barcelona had been chosen as the venue for the future 1992 Olympic Games, he composed this song for their opening. They also recorded an album with several more songs. Unfortunately he left us half a year before the event in which everyone would have heard him live singing with his great friend.

Freddie was a huge fan of opera, so I've read. He will have been super stoked to have been a part of all this, and promoting the 1992 Barcelona Olympics that unfortunately he never lived to see. Had he still been alive and well by the time the opening ceremony kicked off, it's highly likely the pair would've performed this there.

The story of how this song/album came about is so lovely.
Freddie joked in an interview on Spanish television how he'd like to perform with Montserrat Caballe
Freddie idolised her and when she heard about the interview, she responded positively.
He wrote the song and an album for them both, which is why this is more like opera with elements of theatrical rock.

On Spanish TV in 1986, Freddie mentioned that Montserrat was his favorite singer in the world. He was reportedly amazed by the legendary ability of Montsy (his nickname for her), to control her voice. “He had such love and admiration for her, he was always watching to make sure everything was perfect for her” (Montserrat’s niece) 💐💐

    Hi Beautiful Biss.
I watched a documentary a few years back, on how this duet came to be. Freddie had already been diagnosed with AIDS, and when they met for the first time, he refused to kiss Montserrat but instead proffered his hand to shake hers. She, apparently, found this to be quite rude, so he had to confide in her and explain about him having AIDS.
She took his face in her hands and gently kissed him on the lips & their great friendship started from there.
They rehearsed the song over three days before finally filming it.
The song was used by the BBC as the score for their coverage of the 1992 Olympic games in Barcelona.
    Hope you're having a great day/time ... Big Hugs ...
    Dougie XX

Hello Bisscute, without a doubt a different experience for both singers, I think they both came out of their respective comfort zones to give us this beautiful performance. Taking advantage of the fact that this week International Women's Day will be celebrated, I would like to suggest a reaction to the singer Nina Simón, who in addition to having been a great singer, was a fighter for the civil rights of people of African descent. I understand that she received 15 Grammy Award nominations and was recognized with the Grame Hall Of Fame in 2000, and that two days before she died, on April 19, 2003, she was awarded an honorary diploma at the Curtis Institute, the Philadelphia academy that rejected her when she was 19 for being black. I suggest the song Ain't Got No, in its live version, or Feeling Good, both equally beautiful. Greetings and a special hug for you on Women's Week, from Mexico City.

I don't really know too much about Opera or classical music. There were times in my life, when I wanted to try and learn more about it, but never really invested much effort in to doing so, but my grandma sang Italian Opera, so growing up, I saw her perform a few times in small amateur productions, and when we'd go to her house, she'd always been in the background practicing. She even looked a little like Montserrat. You know the old saying, "It's not over until the fat lady sings!" Well, my grandma was the fat lady!
