- In this video, we embark on a bucket list trip to Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park. This highly sought after destination is very hard to get permits and camping reservations for but in a very lucky turn of events we got in on a last-minute cancellation and set off for the park!
Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park is in British Columbia and is 48 kilometres southwest of Banff, Alberta. The whole park is captivating and it truly defines the backcountry experience. there are no roads into this park and the only way into the UNESCO World Heritage Site is by hiking or helicopter. Assiniboine itself is sometimes nicknamed “The Matterhorn of the Rockies” due to the incredible pyramid shape that draws in hikers, photographers, and mountain climbers from all over the world.
With limited time to plan and execute our trip, we chose to hike in from the Mount Shark trailhead, all the way to Lake Magog campground on the first day. By doing this we hiked 29km in one day, but we gained an extra full day in Mount Assiniboine PP so for us it was worth it! The hike in was not overly difficult, it was just very long!
We then spent 2 nights at the Lake Magog Campground. From here we were able to hike around the area. Our favourite spot was the Nublet! On our final day, we flew out of Mount Assiniboine back to Mount Shark. The flight was approximately $200 each and took just 10 minutes to get us back to our car!.
