    I'm glad I decided to check out this tutorial. Denim quilt will be my 2nd quilt ever. Looks similar to the first one I'm working on. 5" squares on top of 10" squares.

    So great that fabric gets recycled!! I love denim quilts. About nesting the seams. It is even easier if you flip the top one up and he bottom one down, You don't need to worry about the bottom one turning and the seams nest even closer together. just something I noticed. 😀

    I like your process. I'm looking forward to part 2 and 3. I recently made a denim quilt out of old jeans and old flannel shirts for the back. Rag quilt style. It's shabby and scrappy and deliciously heavy and warm! No batting needed. It's almost yard sale season so I can get more cheap jeans and try your pattern!

    Another great project and video! So fun! Noticed a Jan Tip that I have not heard you mention with a piece of a yoga mat under your machine. I have old yoga mats for sanding wood with my carpentry projects. Can not believe I had not thought to put a piece of mat under my sewing machines, especially the serger as it wants to fly around. Thanks Jan!

    I have a huge blanket where i used my serger to 'flatlock' the squares and, yes, i backed it with a flannel sheet and tied it (no batting). I cut the remaining denim into circles and used them to make a 'mock cathedral window' with coloured quilt cotton centres.

    Great videos! I have always wanted to make a denim quilt. I made a quilt from 12 x 12 squares by sewing machine when i was about 18 years old…which i still have but the stuffing is all bunched up from washing & I didn’t know to tie the squares at the time-just made it from an article in the”chatelaine” magazine! I’m going to be 65 this year & have been getting back to crafting/sewing the past few years. Your video inspired me to cut the denim squares from the jeans i had been deconstructing the past few months. Today I laid them all out on my living room floor & watched your video again for the next steps! I love the orange plaid flannel you chose for the backing. You mention using sheet sets; would you be willing to share the source? Thanks for all your inspiration! 🧡🩵

    Have you looked into the cricut or silhouette cutting machines available out there for cutting quilting materials? I haven't tried my cricut maker 3 for this yet but I've seen a lot on youtube where it's super timesaving and it can cut precisely. And my machine can cut multiple types of things. Not just fabrics.

    • @JanHowell
      @JanHowell  Před 11 měsíci

      I don't, but it would't be hard to figure out. Get the measurements for the blanket finished size, figure out how big you want your squares and multiply. You'll have to account for the seam allowance as well.

    Do you use jeans that have stretch to them? If so, do you stabilize them first?

    • @JanHowell
      @JanHowell  Před rokem +2

      Yes, you can use jeans that have stretch to them. I don't stabilize them. Just make sure when you are sewing them to a non-stretch block that you don't stretch it. I have no problems with them when it's all put together.

    • @JanHowell
      @JanHowell  Před 10 dny

      Sew half way and then hold top and bottom fabric ends together as you sew. It will either pull the top or bottom fabric a bit to”ease” in the fabric. Try that.
