I tried deep litter at my home in the Vancouver Washington area and it was just so damp the shavings could never dry out, and I had a musty coop. I just had to give it up for now for the girls health and I'll maybe try again later. It worked great in the summer.

Same issue here in Ohio. I was able to salvage some of the deep litter yesterday but I took two over flowing huge cart fulls to the compost pile! The weather is fluctuating a lot. However it is staying unseasonably warm, which the chickens & I love 💕 Thanks for sharing the video. 🥰 Happy you are doing well ♥️

Thanks for everyone sharing their deep litter method fails. I too have seemed to fail in this. Maybe because my coop is so tiny but reading the comments maybe because where I live is so damp. Anyway I just poop and scoop every day or two now. I will save my deep clean for once the air is warm.

I have had a variety of different coops and the only time I had good luck with the deep litter method was the 2 coops I had with dirt floors. I now have a coop with raised wooden floor protected by horse stall mats and the litter will not compost at all. The poo does dry out nicely, but I end up removing all of it every couple of months and replacing all the bedding. I have fibromyalgia and cleaning out the coop is a difficult chore for me as well. I plan a day to do it when I don't have to do anything else and as soon as I am done I take some ibuprofen, get a hot cup of tea and head to my bathtub and take a long hot bath in epsom salts. I make an easy dinner and go to bed early. That's how I deal with it.

    Hello Dahlia
I, also, deal with chronic pain. Big jobs like deep cleaning the chicken coop, would leave me in recovery mode for days. I have limited spoons.
We were able to buy a new coop this year. While we are extremely happy about it. It means putting it together. Fortunately, it’s as pre assembled as possible. And, the instructions are clear.
I am so happy that you were able to clean the coop and not wake up ded the next day!!

Well, you admit you should have worn a mask, but you might have also wanted to wear gloves! I have waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more ventilation in my coop than you do in yours even though it's winter. I'm in Idaho and probably a bit less snow, etc. My coop has 1/2" foam board sandwiched between OSB board and covered with fence slats. I do the deep litter method and normally don't clean out until April. Last week the weather was so nice and I had 2 new garden beds to fill, so I cleaned out the coop. The shavings and poop went in the bottom of the raised beds. The girls had so much fun in the new pine shavings and I left a pile of them in the middle of the floor so they could play. I use my snow shovel and then my smaller garden shovel and then the broom and dirt pan. It works and keeps it simple. Love you and your videos!

I tried the deep litter method this past winter. I'm not a fan. It got stuck to the floor, stunk, a big mess. I had to clean it in January just before we got a big load of snow. I piled it upon the yard where the girl's are safe. And scrub it thoroughly. DE everywhere and a 8 sq bundle of large pine flakes. I have to do this every week. 😊

Omg you words about the antibiotic struck a chord with me. My husband and I have been battling HIB, never heard of it until we got it. I have had 3 rounds of antibiotics, the last one I started having joint pain, as in could not move. I thought maybe it was the HIB BUT it’s been 2 weeks since I have finished the antibiotic and I still can’t lift my arms. I have yet to go back to the doctor because the last 4 weeks I’ve been to the doctors 4 times which is not something I’ve ever had to do before. I did some research and the particular antibiotic I last took the side effects are joint issues. I don’t know how you do it because I desperately need to clean the coop but I can’t lift a shovel right now…. I think I’ll be going back to the doctor this week. Thank you for mentioning this!

Me, I will move my mini-coops (rated for 4 - small coop - to 6 - large coop- chickens each, I have 2-3 per coop now that I have three of them) in a month from late fall/winter cold weather positions to shady hot summer weather positions... It takes about a year for the prior coop position residues to breakdown.... I will eventually start using the coop residue for my planned raised beds... but I have other more urgent issues to take care of... and I cannot stand for long due to knee pain. I do want to make a large walk-in tractor coop for them and only use the smaller mini coops in the cold seasons, preferably in a fenced in area.

i had a similar situation with the weather the temperatures got all the way down into the teens and the highs were in the 20s and for inside the coop it always stayed below 30° we had extremely packed snow on top of freezing rain and we also had freezing fog it was beautiful but very slippery. None of my birds wanted to leave the coop so they stayed in there for five days and by the time the weather warmed up I had a very stinky coop.

I had to scrape out the duck coop the other day. It was gross! And incredibly smelly. I try to use the deep litter method with my ducks (4) and my goose. It ends up being a mountain of molten duck poo. I don't know how I am going to clean that run. I guess I will try a pick and a garden fork. I stopped using shavings or pellets and started using wheat straw. It's cheaper I think but forms an interlocked mass. 😢

Hey, one of my chickens is eating the feathers of other chickens, and I don't know what to do. On the back of one of my chickens, there is a bald spot. Please help me fix this problem. Thanks!
