I kept my four chickens in my shower during last year's sub-zero weather and forecasted ice and snow storms, knowing that my wheelchair would not navigate that environment without risk, considering the arctic temps and winds.
It was challenging, to say the least. It lasted one week. I've since tweaked my set up, hoping I don't have to make that choice again.
Funny note: during that time, I called my son and asked him, "Remember how I used to get you to smile for pictures when you were little?"
He answered, "Yeah, you'd always say, 'chickens in the shower'."
    "Well, guess what?" 😂😂😂

Those aggressive chicken people are the reason I left my chickens outside during that nasty drop in temperature. I went against my gut reaction because this was my first winter with chickens. My girls are cold hearty but we live in Minnesota and it got very cold. I didn’t bring my chickens inside and one of them got frostbite on the tip of her comb. I felt horrible, I will be trusting my gut from now on.

I have talked to a couple of new chicken owners who were young and still in college that gave up chickens because they were lost due to cold weather... it can and does take them out.

Now this was on an Ontario page and we have a vast range of temps. I couldn’t believe the vitriol from this woman when I said I would keep the covers on another few weeks!! I live in NY. When we got the smoke from wildfire in Canada. I putted my 6 chickens in my garage 😂 I couldn’t breathe outside. So I thought that my chickens wouldn’t breathe either. 🤷‍♀️ But this winter we got couple snow days. I was more chill. They did fantastic. It was their first winter, and my first winter with a flock. Update: I didn’t mention that I spent $450 in the Vet to tried to fix a impacted crop of my columbian rock ( the leader of the flock), end up that I fixed doing massage. The Vet just tested for worms. Luckily it wasn’t worm. And few days ago the same chicken started to limping, I checked for bumblefoot. Bingo. It was very tiny bumblefoot. Guess what, I fixed too. She stopped limping. The black dot is gone. She is fine again. My husband laughs and says that I turned to a poultry Vet.

Hey, I bet you could use the Double Splatula method I came up with! Get two unslotted spatulas: One is wide flexy plastic with a raised lip where it joins the handle--that's the collector. The other is a narrow aluminum spatula--it's the scraper. Hold the collector flat at the edge of a dook, and place the scraper upright/edge-down on the other side of it. Scrape the dook into the collector, then dump it into a plastic bag, the terlit, or compost heap. Go back to hit the wet spots with disinfectant and paper towel. It's made my life with indoor hens so much easier!

This morning when I went to let my chickens out, I found that my little Philamenia (Buff Orpington), of 3 1/2 years passed away. For the past two months, I did everything in my power i.e., vitamin B, antibiotics, hand feeding and providing her water via pipette for the past week (she stopped drinking on her own), to help her to no avail. She gave out. Needless to say, I was devastated and remember a few videos ago you spoke about sometimes feeling like giving up. I felt this way too, especially because I like you, love my chickens. However, I told myself "I did the best I could, and all living creatures will pass away at some point." This has given me solace. In any event, thank you for all you do!

  • @thefeatherbrain
    @thefeatherbrain Před 4 měsíci +16

It seems to me that a lot of the people who are really cruel like that are always being cruel to people who are treating their chickens much better than they are. I see this ALL the time with winter care (I'm sure you do too) and rooster care is another topic where I see this. I bet many of these people who criticized that person let their own chickens get frostbite because it's "unavoidable," despite the fact we know it's excruciatingly painful for chickens, but yet the person helping their chickens through the cold is the "bad" keeper.
I totally understand why you kept out of it, but I wish you would have given the original poster a little positive support. And not just to make that person feel better, but to help others who are reading the content and unsure of what they're doing to know that it's okay and quite possibly the best decision. Your name may go a lot further with readers than the people who are ridiculing, no matter how many of them there are.
Also, supporting that original poster could have "planted a seed," as I call it, in some people's minds. For example, in my first flock of chickens, I had a cross beak who wouldn't have survived without a lot of care. She became an indoor-outdoor chicken, spending most of the day with the flock, but living inside the house as well (she'd literally knock on the window to come in), getting special meals, and pampered like a princess (which she believed she was and let everybody know). Living in the country, I got a lot of ridicule for that from friends and neighbors. But then a year later, one of those very neighbors (a cattle rancher by trade), had an old tom turkey who became ill. My neighbor, in her words, "pulled a Bri" (against her husband's wishes) and brought the turkey inside to nurse him to health, something she never would have done if I hadn't had "planted the seed," beginning a year earlier with my cross beak care. To be honest, you may be the best at planting seeds in the chicken community - you tell everyone what they're doing is okay even if it's not really the ideal (i.e., you show no judgment), but you raise your chickens in a much kinder way than the majority people, which I suspect makes many others slowly treat theirs better over time.

I don't believe in bringing home living breathing beings with no preparation or knowledge...so many chicks get sick, injured or worse die because people do this. I’ve had chickens for 2 yrs now… before even deciding to get them I did ALOT of research. So I could have a good argument to convince my husband that we NEEDED chickens 😂. Differences in eggs vs store bought. What kind of bugs they ate. Feeding them eggs vs not feeding eggs. What kind of feed? Medicated vs unmedicated. Fermented vs unfermented. What they absolutely CANNOT eat. Free range vs a run? What kind of bedding? What kind of coop? How much space per chicken? What kind of illnesses I could be facing. Breeds of chickens. Cold weather vs warm weather precautions. All the things I needed to know before jumping into the chicken world. Googled everything I could think of and watched tons of videos from all kinds of chicken keepers. I think I’ve watched a majority of your videos and made my husband watch several. I have to say you have been the most helpful (and the most convincing for my husband) chicken educator I’ve come across. I even purchased your book and the chicken health handbook based on your recommendations. Both have been extremely helpful. Because of your videos and your book, I was able to understand my chickens behavior and care for them when injuries or any other issues arose. I just want to thank you for your honesty and acceptance of all things when it comes to chickens. For not making me feel like even if I didn’t do things you recommended (which is rare that I don’t do what you recommend) I’m still doing the absolute best for my chickens. And to thank you for all the info and help you’ve given me over these past 2 yrs. I hope you continue your work of educating people about chickens

If you want to pamper your chickens and you are able, you should do what your conscience tells you. It's no one else's business to insult a person on their choices if it's what they are able to do. Why people have to be so mean to each other is a mystery to me. Love people, love your animals, and do good. What is not right about that? Some people just love to be hateful and mean. Take care of your babies, human and feathered ones. Who are we to judge. The people who sustainably raise their birds for food for their family, good on you for not supporting the big commercials and choosing to know where your food comes from and providing healthily for your family. That doesn’t make the backyard pet keepers wrong. They are helping themselves, they’re helping their own mental health, they are helping their hens have a good life and if they have children it raises their awareness of the benefits of keeping animals and the responsibility that goes with it. Im so glad you addressed this problem. People join chicken groups to learn and to be able to ask for help, but then are afraid to ask questions because people are so very mean. I just cant stand it. Be nice people!

Not just with chickens, either. There are quite a few people who are dang near experts on various topics on here who roll their eyes on camera at "dumb questions." But their culty fangirl followers worship them and tell them they're wonderful teachers. Sigh.

Oh this reminds me, the woman from the CZcams channel Oak Abode who is from Wisconsin said they took in their chickens when it was -30 degrees into their basement. Their chickens survived, and the neighbor's chickens didn't do as well, and many chickens were lost! It wasn't from this past winter, but from a year or so ago. It stuck in my head.

Yes, there are so many factors involved when it comes to whether or not you need to intervene when it gets super cold. I never tell anyone you absolutely don’t need to heat your coop or bring your chickens in because I don’t know everyone’s circumstances. Every coop is different and people have different chicken breeds that may or may not do well in well below freezing. -30 is COLD!! Especially if the temp drops quickly. Even cold hardy chickens can die if they don’t have a chance to acclimate.

I’m proud of you for not commenting. It’s best to not fuel the hate - in my opinion, the less response those haters get, the less they will be apt to post hateful things online. I mean, really, would they seriously call that chicken keeper “stupid” to her face?? I sure hope not. My love to you, Dahlia for being the better person and keeping the peace ✌️🐓

Those things are so silly to fight about. Wood chips, straw, or sand. Those are just personal preference and honestly might change my mind year by year. Maybe i used straw this year and the mites were out of control. Well I will be changing that. Terrain, predators, where we are on the map all plays into thise decisions.

I enjoy your content, and have been a sub for a while. (a couple years, I think)
We now have, I believe (had a few deaths), 47 chickens; all laying hens. They are cooped according to when they were acquired. We have four coops, one houses 4 hens, the two adjoining coops are home to one flock of 28, and the remaining 15 live down back, in coop B. We love our chickens. We live in CT, and experience temperatures from -10F to 100F in any given year. So far, over the last nine years, we've just left the chickens where they are, and they've been fine. I thank God for that.
About the negative comments; I am glad you brought up the subject. A reminder to take the higher road, and stay out of the fray, serves me well. I do find I occasionally get a bit aggressive with my comments. Many times I delete them. Other times, I apologize publicly. I'm trying to live by, "If you don't have anything kind to say, don't speak."

It’s crazy to me to see how many adults behave like “mean girls” or schoolyard bullies (let alone the peer pressuring!). It’s no wonder kids can be so cruel, look at the adults they watch. Just about everything that we’re exposed to throughout the day does it’s best to divide us, it’s our job to rise above it and focus on lifting one another up. Our tribalism is one of our biggest weaknesses. Even if you’re someone who considers yourself right most of the time, no human has ever been right all of the time. It’s wise to listen to differing opinions because you never know when this is one of those times when you’re wrong. I appreciate your outlook, it’s very much needed in this world!

Amen! There's a fairly prominent homesteading channel that has some -culty fangirls- very dedicated viewers. They constantly praise her for being so kind and gentle and full of grace but she's often quite sarcastic, her witty remarks and passive aggressive backhanded compliments are classless, and she can be just plain abrasive. Point this out and those sycophants will jump down your throat.
I like this lady. I like straightforward, tell it like it is people. But she is NOT all sugar and spice and everything nice like people say she is. Drives me nuts seeing a "mean girl" be so nasty to people. Especially when she turns around as says we need to work together and build each other up. One of my biggest pet peeves is hypocrisy and she reeks of it.

It got down to about 7° at our house in early February. We ordered heaters but they weren't in so I brought my four chickens in the basement in a contained area for 3 days until the heaters arrived. I have just decided for myself that these chickens are my pets. Could they survive in colder temperatures? Yes probably. But my husband and I love these birds like our own children and I have decided that my birds will never struggle below 40° if I can help it. I don't care what all those negative Nellies have to say they're my babies and I'll treat them the way I like! Thank you for your positivity I love your content.

What a great rant to have! This is the first time I've commented on your channel, I love watching you from time to time, your wonderful! I live in Montana and it got down to -32 overnight one night and -20s for several other nights. It was scary. I had heat lamps (secured with clamps and zip ties) and kept the temps above 15 degrees at all times. I also put 'Musher's secret' (meant for sled dogs paws) on their combs to prevent frost bite. Was this necessary? Some people just put in straw with a heat lamp and said good luck. But for me yes! I care about my chickens! And I'm glad those people brought in their chickens!! I would have commented...'good for you!' And your right...the less chickens that are kept in bondage the better!!!

I am glad you did not reply. There is no need to stoop to that level and ruin your good energy... I love your sentiment! I did bring mine into our garage because it was -35F and my poor rooster got frostbite. We did remedy our coop so no more humidity!
