The neutral light circuit is yet another simple circuit on a vintage Honda motorcycle that we receive tons of questions about. While the 12v positive side connects straight to the indicator bulb, it is the grounding path and neutral light switch that baffles most. On nearly every motorcycle we support you will find the neutral light switch under the chain cover, a spot that also sees more dirt and grime than anywhere else on the motorcycle. This exposure to dirt often leads to a malfunctioning neutral light switch. Fortunately, simple cleaning and testing can most often resolve any issues you might be having with this switch or other parts of the circuit. In this video, we are going to help you understand the basics of the factory Honda neutral light circuit wiring and how to individually test each component to discover what is at fault and what works as it should.

My neutral light problem turned out to be a break in the red striped green wire that goes up to the birds nest. It occurred about half way up, under the fuel tank. This was the original, virgin wire, not something that had been played with or hacked up. The copper had just corroded and broke, inside the unbroken in insulation. Strange but that's what happened. I used the test light's sharp end to pierce the wire as I moved up toward the birds nest. I found it and spliced in a two inch section of wire. I chose not the completely replace the wire. I thought all I had was a dirty switch😢, but happy now.😅 Wish I had this video when I did the work but glad you keep hitting it out of the park. Keep it up.

Thank you very much for your videos!! Thanks to your videos and Store I spent the winter working on my 73 CB350, It hasn’t been on the road since 2009. I’ve rode it to work everyday and to run errands for over a week. Much funner and better on gas than my truck lol!!!

I have 1980 Hondamatic i had spark before i took off the bike now no spark but i see i missing 2 fuse from the fuse box could that be the problem no spark
88 Honda NT650 with a neutral switch issue. 12v getting to pin wire connector. 12v getting to plug wire connector (other half) that plugs to neutral switch. 12v getting to neutral bulb. Test light connected to pin wire connector (that runs to neutral switch) no joy. I removed my neutral switch and cleaned it, but still not working. Does this read like the actual switch gave up the ghost?
Will the neutral switch not let the bike start as well with the button.
my neutral light comes on when the bike is in neutral, but my starter won't turn over unless i pull in the clutch. not sure what to make of that lol. my bike is a '76 CB360T
I ended up just bypassing the neutral and clutch safety switches by grounding the green and red wire coming out of the starter solenoid. i suppose there's a danger of starting it in gear now but hopefully that doesn't happen. Anyway, it starts without pulling in the clutch now and that's what i was aiming for
Opps! i guess it was just a matter of time: started the bike with it in gear. it lunged forward and fell over on it's side. smashed off a turn signal but that was about it for damage. rewired it back to the way it was before.
