How easy is a modified HF tire changer to use? Here is the answer .. ... .. its easy easy easy.
Parts I used: Steel various sizes. It is all just what I had in the shop. It just has to fit close (not perfect). Assorted bolts and nuts that I had in the shop.

so funny like seeing a comedy while you were rounding . so realistic because everyone makes such a mistake for the first time but awesome result with your welded arm having duckbill.
Thank you for sharing!
I did the same thing not quit to the extent of yours, but I welded a 1/2" socket on the top so I could use an impact or straight drill to put the pipe on quicker, and the pie that bent if you had of put the pin through the last hole or fist hole it puts the bead breaker on an angle which in turn is part of a Triangle which is stronger than a square like the middle hole created, if where the bead breaker plate sits on the tire bread I took a flapdisc and just made the corners smooth and round, and you won't need the plastic piece from the bucket mine doesn't dig in or nothing no tire damage at all, luv the content, and thanks so much for sharing ah! Andrew in Barrie Ontario Canada
Really appreciate that you use what you have lying around, plastic bucket for the bead breaker and the steel tubing from a bench press. I see people buying expensive hardware (steel, centering cone etc.) when they probably already having it under the bench. Cheers mate 🍻
Thanks 🍻
That duckbill is a game changer. Did the magnet under circular hub to hold up pry tube, no more bungee's spring back "works great". Also removed that pendulum locating pin, underneath installed captive square nut 3/8"x16 thread that floats for different bolt circles ie radius, now install centering collar tube and bolt with matching lug nut installed on 3/8"x16 bolt, slide captive nut to line up, tighten bolt to keep rim from rotating, indexing the rim.
Yes I agree the duckbill attachment is great. I haven't done the magnet on mine yet now I have to get it done. I did get rid of the pendulum, I am using a bolt/pin to stop the wheel from rotating.
Thanks
That ks and I like the way you talked about them and now new.
Excellent job , thank you.
Thanks
what do you call that angle attachment where the duckbill rim protector is placed? The Harbor Freight tire changing kit does not come with that...
I made it. czcams.com/video/vrGFx3ENg7g/video.html
A few questions: 1. Would it be better to not use the lock screws on the square tubing that slides back and forth to adjust for rim size? It seems to me it would be better for it to slide back and forth in case rim isn't centered. The tire would push against the duck head and hold it in place. 2. I'm wondering if the same might apply to the bolt that holds the devise to the tire changer vertical shaft? 3. Does the duck head have a limit on tire sizes? I'm wondering if it would work on smaller rims such as small trailer tires or ATV tires.
I don't know if letting it slide would help, every design I've seen locks it to the tube. The inner radius of the duck head may become a problem as wheels get smaller. But I've never tried it on small tires
Nice!
cool stuff 👌👀
Thank you
Good job
How taller did you make your mod over the Harbor Freight lock down tube? Did you drill through the nut that you welded on top of the lock down tube? the one that keeps the mod from coming up.
I just measured the tube 11 1/8, long enough to clear the nut that keeps the hold down bolt from falling out when not in use.
I did not drill through under the welded nut. The hold down bolt bottoms out on that metal. It leaves the mod free to move slightly. czcams.com/video/vrGFx3ENg7g/video.html
A hint. Try 2 tire irons, 1 over duck bill and put a 2nd one right behind the duck bill, then remove the one on the duck bill, and leave the 2nd one in until the tire starts off.
👍
nice work
Thanks. I have changed several tires with it. It works great.
That's a really nice build. The only suggestion I would have is to shorten those locking wing nuts. You are putting some force on the tire iron right next to those things one slip and it's going to be ugly.
🤔 good thought. Could take a socket weld a T handle on that, have a key (of sorts) to tighten the bolts instead of the welded on wings.
I'm not sure, but placing the bead breaker further out on the sidewall might help. If it's really sticking, it would deform and roll the bead a little
If the breaker foot hits too far from the bead it usually just slides down and away from the bead. Even on the bigger machines.
I upgraded to a heavier lever /tube. It removes the pretty well now
@@TSRGarage Ah, I hear ya.. good deal!
Where did you get the arm and head to go on top of your tire changer?
I made it.
czcams.com/video/vrGFx3ENg7g/video.html
So on part 2 of the build will there be a steel material list. I dont have stuff laying around. Thanks
Sorry it doesn't. The only critical part is the inside diameter of the pipe that fits over the center pin of the changer.
Part two
czcams.com/video/vrGFx3ENg7g/video.html
I've always done these with a bead breaker and spoons but I'm not 59 any more. Looking for easier way. I'll pickup the changer on Thursday and stop and get pipe.
Spray soapy water around the bead before you start.
I just bought this manual tire changer, and plan on doing all of the same modifications you made as well. One question, do you you think a wider bead breaker would do a better job at breaking the bead off the rim? I was thinking more of a contact patch along the tire bead when you press down might give better results than that smaller edge against the bead. Just a thought. I haven't tried mine yet, but if I make that modification and works well, I'll let you know! Thanks for the videos. Great advice. 👍
I don't know if wider would be any better. Having some bead lube mixed up in a spray bottle ( which I didn't have for the video) to lube the bead where it is breaking helps alot.
At the end of the video 16:40 I show my old beatbreaker. It has a very narrow foot and it works great
Also I have replaced the tube that bent with a thicker wall tube.
honestly the harbor freight tool that is only a bead breaker works Great if it is secured to the ground
When I tire has been on for years it will need some force to get it off. All you need is a little soapy water. I like to use a squirt bottle like the soap came in. Push down hard squirt some soapy water in the depression. Rotate and repeat, works every time.
Wider would be less effective because that spreads the applied force over a larger area and would require even more force to break loose.
Higher PSI with the same force, but concentrated over a smaller area. Sometimes smaller is better-😅
Water and dawn in a spray bottle would help a lot
YA👍 The bead lube I have is water soluble... but I hadn't mixed any in a spray bottle yet.
Hallo, welches Gewinde wird zum Befestigen der Felge benutzt? Gruß Matthias
It attaches with the center part that screws down. That still works the same as it is it originally did. czcams.com/video/vrGFx3ENg7g/video.html
After fighting an e range offroad tire onto a wheel designed to not unbead while aired down... Offroad. For 2 hours to get it on with some scratches I'm not proud of... I must upgrade
Hey this is Elijah McGaugh i need some 15" used car tires
What is the name of all the extra modification parts you bought and where can you buy them?
The video description has parts listed. Here is the build video.
czcams.com/video/vrGFx3ENg7g/video.html
hey thanks for sharing. how do you balance the wheel/tire after doing this?
I have a Harbor Freight bubble balancer. They work great if you calibrate them correctly.
That tire diameter might be too large but I use my HF press ro effortlessly break the bead. HF tire spoons to remove old tire and install new one. Easy.
I think you would have an easier time breaking the bead if your bead breaker wasn't so wide. Commercial ones driven by impact wrenches are only an inch or two wide.(check them out). The slide hammer ones are only 2-3" wide. That pipe can only take so much. How much was that top piece upgrade with the duck head? Or did you build it yourself? Thanks for posting.
@@rickl6697 I have upgraded the pipe. I built the tire change upgrade czcams.com/video/vrGFx3ENg7g/video.html
Was the duck bill mod a hf also ?
Nice mods!!!
If you don't want to scratch the edge of the rim's outside, isn't it possible to turn the rim with the outside pointing downwards?
Then you'll work on the backside and any scratches won't notice.
Yes. You would have to protect the face of the wheel against the tire changer mounting surface. but it could be done.
Wheels are actually designed like a trapezoid. And this being the case tires are much easier to mount/dismount from the outside. That being said, I’m curious how easy this machine could make that endeavour.
@@TylerDouglas100 - interesting. All my rims are designed with the exactly same design both ways. Inside or outside doesn't differ and should be as easy to change no matter how.
Is it the tires you refer to? Some tires that are asymmetric have an specific outside.
@@acke26 Yes you’re correct that both outside diameters of the rim are the same. But look at the different profiles inside the rim. The “drop center” is toward the outside of the rim. You use this drop center when mounting/dismounting by placing the tire bead inside it so you don’t have to stretch the bead so much, thereby making it easier.
@@TylerDouglas100 - thanks for your reply. I'm not sure if I understand you correctly.
If the "drop center" is the smallest diameter of the rim placed in the center, then it's the same regardless if you mount the tire from the outside or inside.
You mean the drop center is towards the outside?. The rims I have are symmetric in cross section.
Nice video and the mods are awesome, but one major problem.
White walls facing IN? what kind of monster are you?
Thanks.
Do you have the measurements for the steel
More info on how it was built czcams.com/video/vrGFx3ENg7g/video.html
do a mod on a hf balancer.
What all have you bent on this tire changer?
Just the tube for the bead breaker. I have replaced it with a heavier tube.
The uprights on the bead breaker would have bent. But I reinforced them before I used it.
Do a video of wheel balancer I see in video. Are thay any good
👍 Not the fastest way to balance a tire. It takes a bit of time but I get excellent balance.
are you selling those? i dont have welding equipment. but i need that mod
Sorry not selling them. One similar at lucidautowerks.com/
Where to buy this adapter?
I made mine. czcams.com/video/vrGFx3ENg7g/video.html
Lucid autowerks makes one. And I just saw this on E-Bay. I don't know if it is any good. I have not bought one.www.ebay.com/itm/115569153616?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=fF_aBbc8TUq&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=rmWEsfoqSyW&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Hi TSR ~ I see that you've mounted your HF tire stand to your garage floor. I don't have the changer, yet, but I'b like to get a jump on the project by drilling and gluing in the concrete anchors. Will you please tell me what size hardware you used to mount the changer stand to your concrete floor? Thank you for the nice video production .
1/2 inch x 2
@@TSRGarage Thank you for the helpful information, sir. I was just going through the text and links, under the SHOW MORE control, and see that you purchased (3) replacement tips for the No-Mar mount/demount bar that we own. Our plan is to use the Harbor Freight Tire Changer (HFTC), featured herein, with the No-Mar bar I just mentioned. Our first set of wheels and tires are 18" OEM Subaru alloy wheels from a 2019 Subarus Outback. Other than the rubber protection that you've added, do you have any thoughts on using the HFTC to work on 18" alloy wheels? I'd also like to know what you used to make such nice clean cuts in, what looks like, fairly thick neoprene padding? Not only do I like the duckbill holder that you fabricated for your HFTC, but I also like the other touches you've added to improve what is normally a fairly grueling process. By the way, did you ever try the No-Mar mount/demount bar with your HFTC? Please keep up the good work.
@@bt5526 I did use the no-mar bar a little bit but I found the tips Kind of soft . They bend easily. (I just bought the tips and put them into a piece of pipe to make a pry bar out of it) The duck head makes it easy. czcams.com/video/vrGFx3ENg7g/video.html
@@bt5526 the padding is a piece of old conveyor belt. Cut on a band saw.
@@TSRGarage Thank you for letting me know how you did this, sir. Do you happen to have any thoughts on using the HFTC with a No-Mar bar on 18" alloy wheels?
SABE POR QUE LA PIEZA NO UNDE MAS RAPIDO LA GOMA POR QUE LE FALTA TODABIA BAJARLE UN ESPACIO MAS MIRE EL VIDEO Y TENGO LA MISMA PIEZA
I just did 4 Michelin tires. Never had a issue breaking a bead on my HF but these were a freaking bear! Got is done but with much cursing!
👍 thanks for commenting.
I think my trailer tire was well seated. It was on that rim for about 10 years as a spare. Also I didn't lube the bead (but I didn't have to with my old bead breaker, I show it at the end of the video).
After mounting quite a few tires with this modification I'm glad I did it. I've gone from I'll change a tire if I really have to, to. why should I waste time going to a shop to have them changed.
I added 2 removable studs in the GM pattern to the plate so I just have to lug nut the tire down. Stays tight. So many things you can do to improve.
U no the Clyde who developed that contraption had hard times with it but still put it in market
Lol ya it is just a step up from doing it on the ground with a couple of tire irons.
Hey I need a used 14"trailer tire
I don't have any.
I would just get an xb-455 or 550 bead breaker, alot easier. One other thing when putting a tire on you should have the bead On the head the opposite to removing it, one side over one side under
The wheel should be braced solid against the bottom support of the bead breaker, if it's supported by the tire, it's less effective because then it's giving way with a spongy motion.
I use tire pads cut up from old tires to protect the rim from scratching, while still stiff enough to provide a solid backing.
I'd put a tire cover on that spare to protect it from the sun and weather.
Yeah I thought about it. Now that somebody else has said it maybe I'll actually do it🤣
Don't try to break bead all at once, the HF tool is for occasional use not pro thats for sure. Use lube/soapwater and walk it around as you suggested, work soap in and minimize force needed. The breaker's not strong, bends easily. Reposition the breaker wedge to change angle to prevent wedge slipping. Insert the iron with the flat side up into the breaker to help minimize bending of the tube when pushing down. Did a 18" vette tire on the changer with irons. czcams.com/video/ffo8Ey9d-RM/video.html
👍
You’re supposed to wet the tire with something slippery to loosen the bead 😇
🤣 no.. really 🤣🤣.
I say that in the video. "I just didn't have any mixed up at the moment". The bead breaker that I built /used before this one (shown at end of video 17:00) didn't care about bead lube👍.
TWO PEOPLE WOULD HELP....AND THE BEAD BREAKER NEEDS A SMALL LIP... AS I FOUND IT TO SLIP OFF THE TIRE BEAD
The first side of a new tire with lube should slide on without tools.
My trailer tires come off a lot easier than this, but then I ALWAYS lube
Get the gap open a little when trying to break the bead , then put a little gasoline around it.
That will soften the rubber quickly so the bead will break. ( A Little Gasoline)..
Have you seen this balancer video and do you think it would be better then a harbor freight bubble balancer? czcams.com/video/sfNlAXJdy-c/video.html
This was another person that used a scale to balance a tire. Which type do you think will be the most accurate for a car tire? czcams.com/video/P5wYQzKEuHc/video.html
The 1st one looks like a good idea. Simple to use. The second seems a bit more complicated way of getting the same results.
Your build on the harbor freight duckbill tire machine gave me the inspiration to build one soon and a balancer :)
I thought planes go faster then cars that is why I am looking at stuff like this too. czcams.com/video/XctQdzRFp5I/video.html
The duckhead part arrived today and did you use 1 inch round plumbing pipe? I brought steam pipe once for bushings on my old jeep that held the leaf springs, now that was a thick pipe wall. Did your pipe bend? If not I will go with the less expensive pipe. Only going to make one too.
Looks like junk to me
🤔 👍 thanks for watching.
What a huge waste of time, effort and money
Thank you, you should see some of my other projects😁 👍

I think I'll spend the 2800 and buy a tire machine and balancer time is money
Very true, but for the dozen or so tires I may do in a year, this will do. This was my first time using it. It goes a lot faster the second time 😂.
