      Wow, nice modifications 👍👍👍
If you don't want to scratch the edge of the rim's outside, is it possible to turn the rim with the outside pointing downwards?
Then you'll work on the backside of the rim.

So many modifcations are opposed to the idea behind the Harbor Freight tire changer - simplicity and ease of understanding how it works through grass-roots support.
I very much like the attempt because it shows self-reliability. Kudos.

The bolts/lugs on the base is a great idea.
I did the Hunter-foot duckbill mod on my own but I’ve had some struggles with it- mostly due to the wheels moving around over the post, and the damage from the winged centering hold-down fitting is frustrating and totally unacceptable.
I’m going to weld some 1/2-20’s on there right now!
The other problem I had was a destroyed a “heavy duty” pallet in 2-1/2 tires for my jeep. That’s a problem - but I don’t have my shop built yet so no concrete to anchor to.
Thanks for the real world tips without the “look what I did!” attitude of other vids. Complexity and attitude is not required LOL

The original HFT version is an affordable to everyman tool. Not knocking this excellent mod, or your comment. But if HFT made it this way to begin with I am afraid it would be hard to keep the price down. ( I paid $35 for mine)They could however build and offer the mod as a separate purchase. More could afford the quality in 2 purchases. And depending on the price I know I would consider the second purchase.

I just did 8 285/70R17 dually wheels on mine with a similar home built setup (without all the bearings and washers and stuff) worked good but was a learning curve, learned I need that cone, larger deck/base plate with recess for flat rims, and some clamps. Note to others, if leaving old wheel weights on, start at the weight and you don't have to fight the duck over them, learned that 1/2 way through....

A T-slot made of bar stock screwed below slots n the hat would allow you to make up and use mating T-nuts tapped to any pitch and diameter that floats your boat.
The T-Slot is essentially a hands-free wrench and an assistant to keep the nut from dropping on the floor and rolling under the bench.
Once the wheel is bolted down tight to the hat the T-slot will not be taking the bulk of the force of tire removal. The bolt, T-nut, and the hat will.
You can screw the T-Slot to the bottom of the hat with #8 countersink head machine screws.
No need to use OEM lug nuts/bolts. Machine 60°and or 90° cones that fit around the bolt(s) that you want to use for retaining the wheels you're servicing.

Awesome example of what can be done with a basic Harbor Freight Tire changer. Thank you for posting this - I have made one, but without roller bearings just plain heavy duty tube that I bored out to a close fit over the existing hold down. There is little play and for the number of tires I will be changing should work fine. Just waiting for the arrival of the duckbill to complete. Thank you again for this awesome example. There is no way I could mount 245/75/R16 10 ply tires with the existing bar only without damaging either the rim or tires so this has solved my problem. Whole mod took about 2 hours with some scrap square tube and round stock. Duck bill from Amazon.

Could have saved me over $1,000 if I had seen this video of the modded HF manual tire changer since I DID own one. The welds holding the threaded tube that holds the tire to the plate broke on my first one, then the second one the bead breaker bent beyond repair. The supplied rim holder also gouges aluminum rims badly, so that billet aluminum alignment piece would have been great to have. I could have made a new breaker, but I gave up on it and just bought a full size air powered unit from Eastwood for $,1,500. I'd been better off buying your modification since my needs are only hobby use. I hope more people share this video and your channel. You should patent your upgrade setup and see if Harbor Freight will buy it from you or license you to build them.

Make some wing nut / T handles out of some 5/16” - 3/8” round stock and weld to the heads of those bolts and then you won’t need any wrenches. Pretty slick modification for the HF tire changer

Awesome! Just got one, and plan on doing something like this. Worked at a service station doing tire work for a few years a while back and the duck bill was quite nice after using the full manual harbor freight setup. Couldn’t help but notice you need to weld a couple handles onto those bolt heads to eliminate the need of a wrench.

I added a couple magnets also to assist with the bead breaker. Nothing major, but I think it helps out quite a bit.

@@kyleroberson9059 correct. I realized that after someone asked me which one I used. There was a year between when I ordered the part and actually made the video so I forgot what it was called.
