- I was turned down by two Retired racing Greyhound adoption agencies because I had a child under the age of 5 years. Thankfully, I found "Elite Greyhound Adoptions" in West Palm Beach Florida.
The Founder of this organization seems to feel the way I do... Not in every situation is a large dog right for a small child, or the child right for the dog. However there are many times when both the right family & right dog can come together & make a perfect match.
As I've learned over the past year, many retired greyhound adoption agencies have very strict blanket policies. They will not waiver, even in cases where common sense is staring them straight in the face.
We had a large retriever "Marylin" that had to be put down after a very expensive fight against cancer. This dog was large & sweet but often clumsy and would bump into our 3 year old daughter. She was used to this and familiar with having a large dog. Our other dog (a small mutt) is a fear biter. Our daughter knows & respects the fact that she cannot pet this dog because there's a good chance that she'll get bit. She fully understands this and she's never tries to pet her unless we are there supervising.
This being our background, and having explained this on my initial adoption attempts. I was blown away when I was first turned down for a 6 year old retired racer that was missing a front toe and walked with a heavy limp. "Flash" He had been with the agency for a really long time waiting for someone to try and adopt him. They just about came short of hanging up the phone on me when I said that I had a 3 year old daughter in our home. (This was a large adoption agency)
Since then, and to my amazement I've found that many adoption agencies have the same type of "absolutely not" attitude when it comes to adopting retired Greyhounds to families with small children.
Thankfully, I found Elite Greyhound Adoptions. After being interviewed both over the phone & our family in person, they felt comfortable with adopting to us. We adopted a very sweet 3 year old black "kid friendly" greyhound. Our family fell in love with him. Four weeks later we adopted another very kid friendly 3 year old brindle from Elite. I will never own another type of dog, as long as there are Greyhounds out there that need adopting. These are the sweetest, best behaved animals that I've ever encountered.
I felt so compelled by Elite Greyhound Adoptions willingness to "think outside the box" that I used my film production company to create this video. It highlights this great organization and these wonderful creatures.
Beyond adopting to families with small children in the right circumstances, they also take in Racing greyhounds with serious injuries like broken legs. I've found that very, very few organizations will do this because of the huge expense associated with it. They often take in injured dogs from the other greyhound adoption agencies that won't take them.
They are truly an outstanding organization. They are doing a lot of good for both these animals and the many people and families that have adopted them.
Enjoy the video and if you want to be apart of this great organization please go to their website and donate. They'll appreciated any amount and it will certainly be put to good use. elitegreyhounds.org
By the way the black & brindle greyhounds shown several times in a fenced yard are my wonderful dogs "Jack" & "Ozzy". That's my daughter with them as well. She loves those dogs so much. She puts pink tiaras on them all the time and they don't seem to mind. They are both very tolerant & sweet with her.
Regards,
The Fogle family
I love this video! It makes adopting one of their greyhounds sound like joining a seniors dating service, right down to the music.
We adopted a big, brindle greyhound when my oldest child was a toddler. Murphy was exceptionally patient and gentle with her and with our other kids as they came along. It turned out that my wife, who had never lived with a dog in the house before, was quite allergic to him but managed to find medications to alleviate this. Murphy was good with small dogs (he simply ignored them) but was a menace to stray cats who wandered into the yard. A couple of them barely escaped with their lives. (We were warned about this propensity of his before adopting, so we were good with that, though I doubt the cats were!) Murphy was a big, laid-back, sweet, affectionate couch potato and was loved by all. We haven't adopted another greyhound because of my wife's allergy issues, but I highly recommend adopting greyhounds as pets.
Beautifully shot (recc viewing in HD!) and more importantly handles the issue is a clear, concise way...answers all questions anyone may have ESPECIALLY the misconception that they need a LOT of exercise!
You really capture the essence of this breed, the loving PLACID nature, and the couch potato temperament! BTW, the end shot should be a postcard! Great job for a great cause! Well done.
Greyt video. I miss my two boys. Greyhounds are the only dogs I'll ever own💓💓💓
They are all beautiful sweet babies.
Remember that greyhounds have delicate skin that can easily torn so don't leave small kids and greyhoynds unsupervised.
We have had two as we call them lounge hounds. Have had no issues with my daughter and they make wonderful pets. They do love to run so a fenced yard is a great thing to have.
Warning: do not adopt a greyhound unless you are prepared to do plenty of cuddling. Also, I am disappointed that this video does not warn people that greyhounds are like potato chips: it's very, very difficult to stop with just one...
drhandle they are couch potato chips!
My partner paid £800+ for a toy poodle that took pleasure at biting me our 2nd dog was a £5 retired greyhound she was by far the best pet we ever had, since she passed we've had 9 others, have no concerns Greyhounds really do make great pets
Best breed on the planet along with Whippys and Iggys
Greys are so sweet and docile. I love them
I have never adopted a greyhound, but they are great dogs. They are so good natured. They are not used to love and affection from humans just off the track, but they learn soon.
Lovely video, I can't believe that agencies still turn away families with small children, Greyhounds are amazing with kids of all ages, Greyhounds are the sweetest, most loyal companions you could ever wish for, so cute the shots of the little girl with the dog.
they don't here in Australia,, I have two greyhounds, from an agency,, idiots that make these stupid laws, know nothing about Greys
It is not a law here in the US. Many adoption groups have adopted this policy, however. I believe it is based on a liability concern, as a big dog no matter how gentle, can accidentally knock a child over or down a flight of stairs... kind of like an older sibling could.
I don't think greyhounds and kids are a great match. I am not saying they would hurt kids, but kids have too much energy, they move too fast. My greyhound is kinda afraid of small children.
Great video, excellent job with greys. They're so sweet with everyone, they do deserve a hearth and lots of cuddle
I'm in LOVE with my greyhound! Absolutely smitten! Just adore her!
Here's a list of families Greyhounds are best for:
All of them
No. Plenty of idiots that own them shouldn't. These aren't dogs for novice or inexperienced owners.
No I'm the person who knows what they are talking about fuckwit. Unlike you ya spastic turd.
I disagree. They are not for everybody.
@@jpah8944 calm down
Good luck trying to find one to adopt, the tracks are closing down and there are fewer dogs available. And some of the Greyhound Rescue Groups are........strange. I speak from experience.
HA!!! this JUST happened to me...i said "no, only one dog is necessary"....yeah, now we are about to add a greyhound to the bunch....it grew on me, lol
Greys are great dogs and very loving with childrens. Great Job Eite
I love of greyhound dogs very nice
ive had a greyhound he was so beautiful and was so fast he was so silly
His voice sounds like the instructor in Microsoft flight simulator.
Nice video.... The "kid" rule is touchy.... most Greyhounds tolerate all kids just fine. We adopted 2 before our daughter was born and they both loved her at every age.. shes 5 -1/2 now..
Too funny... Actually my wife had a dream one time that we had 5. I swore that I would never have 3 dogs... Never say Never. They are so easy going and easy to take care of. They are also such good companions too each other!
@SuperBookwolf some greyhounds do have agression issues which makes them unsuitable to be around kids. However my one had sleep agression issues, he would try to bite your ankles (not really) off in the middle of the night if you got out of bed and stepped near him. Funny though my daughter would sleep walk right past him and he wouldnt make a peep, only the adults. So i feel he knew it was a child and would never harm her. FYI his brother who we adopted too is still alive and well at 12.5yrs
@jkmbb2006 In Britain the rescue places come and do home checks, so they are placing the dog in a home that suits them. I never realised that the US was so strict. What is the reasoning behind it? Greyhounds are so gentle and soppy, they are ideal for families with kids as long as the greyhound is not a really nervous one.
Bravo! Great video and thank you for what you do!
It shouldn't be touchy... Again not in every situation, but there are definitely instances where these animals could be getting good homes.
For every one dog placed in a good home means that an agency can bring in another one off the track. By changing this kind of thinking of "absolutely no dogs for families with small children", is probably the difference of saving hundreds of these animals yearly.
It's my intention to try and get other agencies to lighten up on this blanket policy.
a great dog as a pet very loveing and dont need great deals of walking just need a bit of time when you first get a ex racer which dont take very long and well worth it in the end
Nice video
Baffies are the best 💕
The one item that was skirted was the Osteo issues.. and that has been tied down to one gene. So hopefully if the kennels work on that problem, it can also be bred out of the breed. I have has 2 that died of cancer.. My first one died of Osteo after he was bitten by a loose dog while I was walking Otto. The Osteo started in his hip at the site of the bite from the small dog. He had to put him to sleep 2 months later. My second dog ended up with Melanoma.
You think your dog "caught" cancer from a dog bite?
I currently have 2 greyhounds and have had greyhounds all my life. While they can be great with kids some of them are afraid of younger kids who are more active. They also get very excited around cats and small animals.
Not ALL Greyhounds behave this way. Mine doe not get excited about small animals nor children.
Can people all over the world adopt if interested? I'm in love!😍🐕
Eh I know how you feel..... I agree with you... over the last 9 years since I adopted my Greys, the local adoption group has tightened up the rules soo much its almost worse than adopting a kid. Thank you for your efforts, I know the Greys appreciate it.... Check out my vid if you get a chance.
omg the perfect dog
So cute
nice
They must have forgotten about Osteosarcoma.......I love my Greys but be honest.....
Already house broken? How can that be since they live in a kennel not a house?
We've adopted 3 rescue greyhounds at three different times. Two of the three peed in the house once when first coming home. After that there wasn't a single accident. We think those single incidents were more of a smelling another dogs scent & marking their arrival known more than anything. Their routine of being let out of their kennel and into the grass to do their business is what they know. Since they are usually 2-3 years old & have been doing this their whole lives it's already programed in them to them to do their business outside.
I don't have grass and was thinking of getting a fake grass specifically for dog - do you think that would confuse them?
LindieLee I live in an apartment and we also bought the petloo fake grass system and our greyhound ellie uses it fine with training. Although she rarely uses it as we take her outside. Our grey was completely house trained when we got her and she’s so amazing and sweet.
i wanna greyhound
vet kissed him at 155 lol
Not all Greyhounds are suited to families with small children.
Not all dogs of ANY breed are suitable with children!
very nice video but a back yard FENCE is 99.9% required.
bza069 why? I disagree
Why? Because they are hunting dogs, sighthounds that NEED to be contained in a secure and safe area. Anybody who thinks Greyhounds don't need fencing shouldn't own one.
ur right u need a good fence,, 6 ft is usually standard size fence,, so ur right and their wrong
An alternative to a fenced yard is simply never allowing the dog off lead when outside. Millions of dogs in large cities live this way just fine.
Many if not most of the Greyhounds adopted here in the Suburbs of DC and DC itself live just fine in Condos, Appartments, or Townhouses.
Sell. Grehound adopted place comment me reply
ı need one but it should not be neuthered..
This is a lie
What is a lie? Explain please.
