I feed all my greyhounds raw ground meat and bone 80%, 10% offal, 10% fruit/veg/kelp oil. For crunch/treats they have raw duck necks or beef trachea. If you do the same you’ll see rapid improvement in energy, shiny coat and firm stools. However for those clinging to kibble, at least please choose grain free high premium with transparent ingredients listed on the pack. There are far too many with mystery by-products or non-specific additives.

    • @mastod0n1

I had to get a prescription kibble for my ex racer to help firm up her stools. We tried a lot of different options but the prescription kibble worked so we've stuck with it.

I have an Irish Greyhound. I feed him twice a day but he also gets meat/ chicken/sardines alternately, with his kibbles. Also Pasta mixed through his meal. I think anyone who only feeds dry kibbles to their Dog must be so boring and nothing tasty to look forward to. I wouldn't want to eat dry cereal every single day of my life. Dogs are carnivores and love meat just like most humans who also love a varied diet. My Greyhound doesn't ask for much, apart from food and I think he deserves something tasty that he loves. Not just dry food to sustain him. fergus also loves milk after every meal and pretty much demands it😻

Also a useful fact about greyhounds is that cooked pasta or rice kept in the starchy water really helps their sensitive tummies. An evening primrose pill in their dinner gives them a lovely shiny coat. Also a seaweed substitute for dogs helps with their plaque. Also bones like ostrich bones for example are really good for their teeth these are just a few more tips seeing as my family has owned 5 greyhounds.

Nice solid video about what it is really like to own a greyhound. I have a greyhound/lab mix. He loves to run , but will only fetch about 4 times, then it is time to chill. And he will usually do zoomies on one of the fetches. He is also VERY vocal, something we didn't expect. he didn't become vocal until he turned 2. Fantastic on walks (this took some training), but now a neighbor will ask if she can walk him when she goes for walks. The fact that they will chill out most of the day is great, as they will rest mostly while you are at work. 100% agree on the toys. Our dog is a master at destroying toys.

I have had the pleasure of living with 2 greyhounds as well as having a friend that runs a placement center. We had German Shepherds when I was a child and I have lived with many different breeds of dogs. I have been told greyhounds are a lot like a cat rather than a dog and I do have to agree. Everything that was said in this video was right on from what I have seen. They are wonderful dogs and surprisingly laid back. Oh, and Fanny, maybe you don't spend much time with your pooches, but every breed has some of its own characteristics, there is no way I would say a beagle, sheepdog, shepherd, and greyhound are the same type of dog.

Nice video :-) 7 Ghunds and counting here, currently Clyde and Ellie (twins) both at 7 years. I would only add that yelling at them and getting stressed does absolute zero. Anything they do well, like not pulling when told, ignoring the cat or laying down (when wanting to bite new male strangers) is rewarded with a high pitched voice - good boy! Food works for the recall, but they don't revolve around it like other dogs. Recall or any other commands are best rewarded with squeeky voice and love.
Skin cancer is common and if you see little black spots, get it sorted fast and they will be fine. Bone cancer is horrible and if they get a sudden swelling of a joint, it could be too late. Physical injuries when pups is ridiculous. Like a teenager behind the wheel of a Ferrari. Injuries still common when they get older. Clyde has had maybe 20 stitches in his lifetime, Ellie only a couple (intelligent, nimble little girl). Kim had about 100 shared with her sister Mel due to high speed 'offs' and collisions. Three staples in nozzle when Kim T-Boned Mel. Clunk! Yelp! Clunk! Yelp! Clunk! Yelp!
Some are cat friendly, most are definitely not. Never heard of one going for a human or child, but they are a dog.
Sibling fights very rare, but if they do kick-off, they get incredibly nasty very quickly. Look for staring, head down, lip curling and be prepared to use your body to intervene pull them apart. They calm down almost instantly and don't bear grudges. They only do that with other greyhounds and generally food or a toy is the spark. Our collie spotted Mel staring at Kim and jumped in before anything happened. I was moving as I saw it but little 13 year old 15kG jumped in before two 30kG lumps misbehaved. She just got between them, bared teeth and said stopit!
P.S. Iv'e been hit at speed once, luckily I had wellies on and was well rooted, made me gasp for a few seconds. El stupido got a bloody nose, but didn't notice. My daughter got skittled from behind when Sophie lost the back end and ran into the back of her knees.
Clyde is a lovely dog, but not cat friendly. He's skinned and eaten two hedgehogs, a whole pigeon and two crows at once when they upset him in our yard. Cats see him and don't go near luckily. Ellie would not hurt a fly. Mel and Kim same, although Kim I would not trust near sheep at twilight (natural hunting time). Sophie not interested in hunting.

Please use only greyhound safe toys that are tough chewers for your grey. They amount per am & pm feeding will also depend on the brand. Use the very best quality you can afford. Never heard the "dead dog" thing before... everyone I know calls it roaching. Loved the reminder about the thin skin. NEVER take your greyhound to a dog park. Please learn everything you can about this awesome breed before adopting! There IS a learning curve and it is SOOOO worth it.

But you do have to be careful that the food you buy isn't too rich for them. When I adopted my former racing greyhound, we fed her Blue Buffalo Chicken and Rice, which is a very high quality brand, but she continued to have digestive problems and we finally realized it was because the food was too rich. We started feeding her the Costco brand and she was fine immediately. They have such sensitive stomachs and it can take awhile to find the right food. I've never heard of greyhound safe toys. Can you post a link?

@@5plus9equals7 At dog parks {they don't have these in UK but just on a walk you can meet badly behaved dogs] you can get poorly socialised dogs and if they bite a greyhound, the hounds skin tears like paper.
It really is very thin indeed and not covered by much hair either.
I have seen ellipses of skin bitten out of hounds as there is just so little hair protection on a hound.

Whenever you were on the couch, she would either curl up in her corner of the couch or plop herself ontop of you. Unfortunately last year she developed arthritis from the neck down and she could barely walk, lay down and eat. She was well past 12 and according to the vets that’s an amazing life span for a big dog. I made the choice to have her put down in November last year, I couldn’t bare to see her live in pain and I couldn’t afford any medication. I miss her everyday 😞

One cup of food, twice daily, for a 100 pound (45 kilo) dog? My 90 pound (41 kilos) greyhound gets 2 cups, twice daily, and he's maintained his lean, racing weight, and he's 5 years old. My 68 pound female is maintaining her lean, healthy weight by eating 1.75 cups of a food, twice daily. The recommendation in this video is, basically, suggesting half the required amount of food. My two dogs, together, go through a 45 pound (20.5 kilos) bag of food in one month. (4Health, beef & rice, 45# bag, from Tractor Supply, US$45... approved as being an excellent choice by their vet.) As for treats, I use a different flavor of the 4Health kibble, and even given just a couple of pieces as an award thrills them to pieces, plus if I'm particularly generous with the "treats", I can cut back on a main meal a bit, and this doesn't effect their bowels. Besides, so many treats are like junk food.

Good info in general however our greyhound is very gentle and in over a year she still has the same toys and never destroys toys or other household items.

Feed your greyhound at least 2 cups twice a day. This greyhound in the video is not getting enough to eat for his size. Try to keep him about 5 lbs within his racing weight. They can have more than just dry kibble. They can have vegetables like green beans, carrots or broccoli mixed in as well as canned dog food or any kind of meat.

My greyhound doesn't do zoomies very often but when she does it's on her back on the settee, with her legs in the air, running upside down

Olive has a lovely disposition. I am about to adopt an ex Racer next week and have pretty much lots of things in place. Thank you for the tips will bear them in mind. Greys have a beautiful nature. Am totally against Greyhound racing. I'm only able to take one chap away at this point. Hopefully I'll remain healthy enough to keep doing this for years to come...

    • @momtoty
      @momtoty Před 2 lety

If you're against racing, you have no respect for your greyhound. Your greyhound was selectively purpose bred from top quality blood lines. They are bred for speed and they love to race. Any adoption group that fought to keep the tracks open in FL and silence the anti racing activist will not adopt out a greyhound to anyone that isn't for racing. It's the anti racers that ended racing in FL so they chose to end breeding, adopting, jobs lost, sad greyhounds so they do not deserve to ever own one.

I have 2 gray hounds and there food bowls are on the floor, and they are fine. Some of this is right but when they run around like that it is called zoomies and they like to run around the room with there toys not outside our living room is quite big. 😁
