I've had 5 retired racers over the years. My current girl, Peaches, is 12 this year. They're a breed like no other. Peaches was considered "special needs" at the adoption kennel due her her extreme shyness. She'd been overlooked for months and months after retirement because she didn't want to make eye contact and the kennel wondered if she was going to be adoptable. I'd just lost my 12 year old greyhound to kidney disease, so I was looking for another. It broke my heart that she was so fearful and shy so I took her outside on a leash and spent about an hour with her and then ended up bringing her home. The adoption coordinator cried when I signed the adoption contract because she'd been passed by over and over by people looking for a dog with a bubbly outgoing personality. She loves and trusts me now, of course, but she's still very shy and doesn't trust any else. That's ok. I've got her back. ♥

It really is sad how people force them to run. I think it’s okay when the dog enjoys it, we used to take our border terrier to a fun race (no one made money it was just for fun) and he loved it! :)
They shut down the greyhound track in Council Bluffs Iowa. I also wish they'd shutdown horse racing! Most of the horses end up going to slaughter when they're no longer able to race. 😢💔

There has been progress to shut it down in the USA bought in Australia. It is terrible, and in China and other countries. And then there is the hunting they do with a Galgo’s in Spain, which are Spanish greyhounds, and I will not even torture you by telling you how they kill them. Follow Galgos del Sol.

Well, Sabrina's behaviour is, in fact,, absolutely typical of greyhounds away from the track. They are goofy, zoomie, snuggly people. My favourite dogs.

She is wonderful. She just exudes joy. Life is not a gift. It's a loan. Sooner or later we are called back home. When we lose a cherished companion it hurts. But as we see here the best way to soothe the wound is to make a new connection with someone in need, someone who can give so much in return. It's a gift to the memory of those who have gone.

You are wrong about racing. Stop racing and the breed ends. There are many misconceptions about this issue. Please educate yourself before deciding to ban things. (By the way, placing retired racers in homes started within the racing community, often over the objection of some of the "humane" societies.)

It's heartbreaking that we continue to use animals for cruel things like racing. Animals are not entertainment. They are not things. They are emotional, social beings, deserving of safety and love.
@mariaangelova8275 Greyhound racing isn't cruel at all. Greyhounds love to race, it's a game to them. They love the chase. They get the best care and plenty of love. Do you have dogs? Cats? Do hey play with toys? Fetch a ball for you? Run around looking cute? That's entertainment. Your pet entertains you. Yes, we have pets to love and spoil, but they also entertain us. Greyhound racing entertains many people and it does no harm watching them run. It' pure poetry in motion watching them run.

Greyhounds are one of the most laid back breeds! Ours was a rescue from an idiot who used him, and 39 others, to hunt coyote!! He was 8 when we adopted him. He gave us 5 1/2 years of fun, laughter and love. He didn’t have a mean bone in his body! He loved everyone (except cats)! We miss Vega dearly

If anyone watching this has never met a greyhound, all of Sabrina's behaviors are familiar to me. The spinning, prancing, paw-slapping and all of her other fun, goofy moves are things I've seen in my greyhounds. They can be so much fun.

I have adopted 10 Greyhounds over 29 years and fostered a few as well. I have 2 now and after these, my ride with them is done - my age and life now is the reason. I would not trade these past 29 years for anything. I adopted every one of them right from race tracks and they hand picked me. I love Greys, they are wonderful.

The retired greyhounds are very gentle loving companions. It's fun to turn them loose outside. They go like hell for about 30 seconds then just chill out.
I have a 12 year old rescue racer. He has been with me since he was 3 years old off the track. He is pure joy and such a sweetheart. He now has some arthritis but still loves his ball and zoomies.

I convinced a friend to adopt Greyhounds off the track. She is on her second one. They are sight hounds so a fenced yard works best. They run like maniacs outside then get in the house and are couch potatoes. Super sweet, everyone I've ever met!

We’ve had 2 greyhounds. They are like nothing else. I wish everyone could be loved by a greyhound. It’s a wondrous thing. Our current grey is 13. She has health problems and is probably in her last months of life. I will be shattered when she goes. Life won’t be the same.
I can see the special bond between you too. Thank you to let her in your heart and home. She taught you to never give up on love even if it means suffering for the lost ones.
The first greyhound I had was in the early 90s right after a painful break-up. He was the best dog ever and so gentle. I eventually adopted a female greyhound and they got along very well.

Greyhounds are so lovely. My Sarai is the sweetest dog ever. And sooo smart. There are Greyhound Rescue organizations all over the US for anyone who would like to consider adopting a retired racer (there are not many greyhounds in the world who are not racers, a very few are show dogs but VERY few). They only race - if they are fast enough - for the first 2-6 years of their lives and then they live to be 12 -15 and need homes. They are NOT super energetic - they are called the 45 mph couch potatoes because they're bred to run very fast for 2 mins and then sleep the rest of their day. I take mine for a 4 block walk once or twice a day and she's happy and fit. Every so often she gets the zoomies in my back yard, but other than that, she mostly sleeps outside my office door. You do mostly need a fenced yard, or if you live in an appt you will need to have a close place where you can walk the dog to do their business. They're generally well mannered and house trained when you get them, but may need about 2-4 months adjusting to "civilian" life. For example, they usually don't know what stairs are, and may not understand that a window is a solid substance you can't run through, until you show them. The greyhound rescue organizations also spay and neuter them, ensuring they have all their shots, etc, and often foster them (where they learn about stairs and windows) before you get them. They need homes where they live indoors and with their people, they are raised in a large group of other greyhounds and don't do well left alone for more than workday,. I could go on...anyway what a lovely video, I love my greyhound and highly recommend adoption to the right people!
Greyhounds are supposed to be very thin! She was hardly emaciated.
