      Ours wasn't a track dog, but a pretty much ignored pet. That came with MAJOR separation anxiety (she destroyed 2 kennels in a week, & pulled off a doorknob), plus MANY other quirks, but I will take another grey ANY day!

      Kent Mains, None of my retired greyhounds have had any emotional scars, not even the many I've fostered in the last 22 years. They have great lives before they retire and are happy, healthy, silly, comical, loving dogs because of the love and care they had at the kennels. They adjust very quickly to home life. After all, they have never been in a home with stairs or windows or TV'S or furniture. It's all new to them so some may be a little frightened at first and overwhelmed, but that's all normal.

    I have loved dogs all my life, and have owned many different breeds. They all have their wonderful personalities and characteristics. That said, one day I noticed a woman walking her Greyhound, so I stopped to talk and and most importantly, meet her dog. I was surprised to learn that he was a "couch potato," and I was deeply and dramatically impressed with how approachable and SWEET her dog seemed. If I had a larger home, I could absolutely see myself owning one. These dogs are truly special:)

      I agree also,Jazz is my second greyhound ,tiny cottage ,small yard .I take her out ever day for up to an hour ..She has just turned 4 ,came off the track before she turned 3 with front leg injuries. She has healed but was advised not to run her much.BUT Jazz loves her safe off leash places I take her each morning. Just let her have quick runs ,sometimes she sees a dog around and races to greet them .Have to be careful as some dogs maybe too rough or too small for her to be with.
      Have had her 8 months and she is just the bestest pet for me at 74.The most affectionate dog I have ever owned in the 50 years I have had dogs in my life.
      My first greyhound before Jazz was 8 1/2 when I adopted her .Had gone from 3 years racing to 4 years of breeding so didn't know what real loving was .
      Only had her 20 months before I knew she wanted to go .She was still doing zooming on the beach up until 2 weeks before she passed.
      She was the reason I got Jazz.
      Absolutely no regrets at getting much younger girl with so much love and energy for a hound.BEST DOGS EVER ❤

    Mine took a while to settle in. Sally is 8, but I found her following me around the house, interested in my cooking, following me from room to room. (I'd say to myself 'I thought these were meant to be lounge lizards????') But 5 months later, we're now in a routine. Walking morning and afternoon. Now she's sleeping straight from 9.30am to 3.30pm (dinner and walk time approx 4pm), then back to bed by about 6pm-6am. So they just need time. You DO fall madly in love with them though.
    Some days we go to the beach and I do let her off the leash to play with other dogs in the surf. I've trained her in certain areas where she can swim to be off the leash.

The fourth one, sniffed at the little one and wasn’t bothered. Then leaned in for a cuddle with me. Took one of my grandchildren back the next day to meet it. It went straight over for a cuddle. BEGIN BY WALKING AND SHOWING THE DOG THAT THIS SITUATION IS NOT THREATENING AND A FUN WALK IS ALL THATS HAPPENING. NEX, IN SEVERAL DAYS!! SIT ON THE BIKE'S LOWERED SEAT AND WALK TOGETHER. OBVIOUSLY, AT SMALL INCREMENTS, INCREASE THE BIKE SPEED IN A WEEK OR TWO. @Sweet Cheeks Ran threw the kitchen window, twice =[. boy is so fast he didn't even get hurt however, he did get us kicked out, We now live in a house on 1.3 acres of land and have two very nice man made lakes near by that I take him on walks around on the weekends, he still gets 1 to two walks a day but they are much longer walks now. around the lakes is like 3.5 miles and around the block out here is 2 miles.
      Guess I should explain why he ran out of the windows, he got startled by a very loud car, poor fella likely thought godzilla was coming after him or something. both times I was at work and both times he ran right to the apartment office. The apartment manager told me if I could get him singed up as emotional support they wouldn't kick me out but I feel too many people abuse that for the wrong reasons, like this honestly would have been. sorry for being long winded but we are doing really well now and love our new home

    Greyhounds will kill strange cats. They are sight hunters and just a little movement will get their attention. You can get caught off guard easily if you are not paying attention. They are the greatest couch potatoes in the dog world. I love them.

      Mk Shffr, Greyhounds are usually around 2 to 4 years old when they retire.

    • @artiicom
      @artiicom Před 2 lety +1

      2-5 years, but some have raced until their senior years at 7-9 years. There are also some dogs that just don't show interest so they "retire" even tho theyve never raced.

    Can you adopt a greyhound puppy?because i want a greyhound but i want a puppy insted of an adult.

    • @momtoty
      @momtoty Před 2 lety

      Ilinca Croiter, Greyhound puppies are very hard to adopt because most are trained for racing. Those that won't race are over a year old. Some puppies might be born with a deformity which would make them unable to race, so those pups would be adopted. If you want a greyhound puppy, you would most likely have to buy one from a breeder.

    • @imaweirdo2592
      @imaweirdo2592 Před 7 lety

      Choctawnic Most dogs are good outside, but they don't need a lot of exercise and they get pretty tired. This may very from dog to dog , but the majority of the breed are quite lazy. So they might like the hike if you are thinking of getting a greyhound, but make sure it isn't too long.

    • @ChoctawNawtic4
      @ChoctawNawtic4 Před 7 lety

      What's "too long"? I like hiking n camping...if they can't hang, it's prob a bad mix...for me.

    • @ashddd
      @ashddd Před 7 lety

      Too long depends on the dog. Most greyhounds walks last about 30 mins. Some shorter and some longer though.

    GREYHOUNDS DONT WANT TO SIT, OR THEY WOULD VOLUNTARILY ASSUME THAT POSITION OFTEN -- THEIR BONE STRUCTURE MAKES IT DIFFICULT, SO DONT MAKE AN AGING DOG AT THE ONSET OF ARTHRITIS SIT!!!!!

    • @Pistolmike59
      @Pistolmike59 Před 4 lety

      Tony Lang I think it also depends on the Sex of the grey. We have both a male and a female. Our female can easily sit but our male cannot. We use the command ‘down’ for both of them.

      Great things about Greyhounds is they are older when you adopt, have more canine and human socialisation than most breeds and are crate trained. with any breed you can end up with one that has issues though. Going through an adoption group helps a lot. You give them your wants and needs in a dog, IE cat/small dog safe, and they do their best to match you with the perfect pup. if you vet one home and he just doesn't fit you can bring him back. I've had 6 so far, currently have 4. I've had 1 that was a bit skittish, remember they've never seen things that are in most households, and 1 that is a spook, scared of everything. I k we both of those before adopting them though.

    beautiful, but as many have been trained on live bait, many can't be trusted around other pets ever again... cats, rabbits, small dogs, etc.

    • @momtoty
      @momtoty Před 2 lety

      watchgoose, That is a lie. Live baiting is illegal in the USA and has been for 30 years. And They can live very happily with other dogs, cats and even rabbits and chickens. Some greyhounds do have a strong prey drive and can't live with cats or small animals, but most can and do. Live baiting is never used here anymore.

    • @artiicom
      @artiicom Před 2 lety

      Live bait is very rare nowadays. The reason theyre not very trustworthy is their natural prey drive.

      I have had 6 so far and none have intentionally gone in their crates... occasional accident when they had worms or changing foods. And a couple of mine were straight off the track. it's ingrained in most dogs not to go where you eat or sleep. Greyhounds actually have more crate training than almost any other breed.

Let the working dogs muscles deteriorate, treat it like a bloody poodle and dress it in clothes. Even let non active old people have them (sorry guys no offence). This is ridiculous. Adopt a Greyhound? I’ve even heard you yanks call them ‘gray’. WTF! The more I dig, the more upsetting it gets. You’re all gonna ruin the breed. These are working dogs, go get yourself a pug!

      Regarding the wearing of a jumper - to me (I was a vet nurse) it looks like the greyhound has had surgery and it is wearing this to stop the dog from worrying the wound as it heals. We all know how itchy a wound can be while it heals.

    • @artiicom
      @artiicom Před 2 lety

      Lol what? These dogs aren't leash trained most of the time, and may help themselves through doors themselves. Greyhounds need coverage from both heat and cold, dogs can live in apartments happily as long as they're given the proper needs, and poodles are working dogs too. They're literally a sporting breed. Learn your facts.
