One of my mate had cousins come over from America, to the north east. They’re so chatty and enthusiastic, full of conversation and the open mind of a child, finding everything funny. Lovely people. One weekend we were all wrecked and told him to come join us in our mates garage. Flies and unwanted insects will be attracted to your car. Eventually, your paint will fail, your car will rust. Your driveway will be covered in rust stains. Your neighbors will think you are lazy, stupid, or both. Your wife of 20 years will leave you. Your children will disown you. Your life will slowly go to hell. And all you had to do was wash your damn car once in a while.
When I was a kid the grandmothers and grandpas in the neighborhood had no qualms about correcting people in public. Kept up the standards of behavior in the neighborhood.

When we lived in England in the 70's, I was astonished by how bluntly people there (especially the older people) would talk to total strangers as though somehow they were entitled to voice their opinions about pretty much anything. I have relatives who are South East Asian and they're thrown by the British mix of blunt, respectful honesty. To them bluntness and respect are oil and water while to me it's aggravating how indirect they can be, but I remind myself that that's how their own culture is and it's a difference when it comes down to it.
