    Moneyball mostly worked. The A's were winning 100 games every year (elite level) despite having one of the lowest payrolls in the game while Billy Beane implemented "moneyball". Because they understood player and statistical analysis better than other teams. The same thing is still true in baseball today.

    • @goldenageofdinosaurs7192
      @goldenageofdinosaurs7192 Před 2 lety +15

      Yep. One only has to look at the San Francisco Giants winning 107 games this year, while spending significantly less than the Dodgers did to win one game less than the Giants.
      The one drawback now is that every team is using statistics to make player decisions, so it’s not the advantage it used to be. But it can still allow you to put together a solid team without having to spend like the Yankees or Dodgers to do it. The one place it has its drawbacks is in the playoffs. There just aren’t enough games for the numbers to even out, so you need a little luck. But what team doesn’t need a few bounces to go their way to win a championship?

    • @nwj03a
      @nwj03a Před 2 lety +1

      Baseball is all about numbers. I was ok, not good, but I could run, and hit homers. I’m fairly certain I stole more bases than the rest of my high school team combined; if not, it was close.
      Even if I wasn’t starting that day, I was subbed as a runner. The other team knew I was going to steal and usually I did it. Bad defender, really bad, but I could run and knock.

      The funny thing is that Earl Weaver recognized the value of walks back in the 60's. But it seems like that knowledge was somehow lost until Billy Beane started working the system to get walks for cheap.

  • @jamesmoore4003
    @jamesmoore4003 Před 2 lety +42

    Billy Beane just didn’t play as well in the big leagues like everyone expected. Sometimes people who play baseball or basketball or football really well in high school or college just don’t play well in the big leagues for whatever reason. It just happens that way sometimes…and that’s what happened with Billy Beane.

    • @billymuellerTikTok
      @billymuellerTikTok Před 2 lety +9

      he was overrated and drafted too high coming out of high school because the scouts back then only judged players by what they saw with their own eyes and saw a handsome 18 year old 6'4" kid from Southern California who could hit the ball far, run, field and throw but who didn't have the emotional maturity to be able to deal with failure on the field. He would have benefitted from getting drafted later on instead of in the first round and taking the college scholarship where he could have had a lot more time to learn and develop and 4 years later re-enter the draft at age 22 with a lot more wisdom, strength and skill.

    • @jamesmoore4003

    "It's a metaphor." is a subtle point and one of the best scenes in the movie. It's Jonah Hill's character telling Brad Pitt's Billy Beane that Beane had hit a home run with his new Moneyball approach and didn't even know it. Beane changed the way baseball is done and really all sports these days.

    Baseball is a truly magical sport. No clock, all patience. I hope you all get to attend a professional game some day. It’s a game that has brought grown men to their knees in an emotional bliss. It’s more than just a game to Americans. It’s why it is our national pastime.

    • @jmag579
      @jmag579 Před 2 lety

      The no clock thing is also what drives some people crazy about it too. So much downtime. I like baseball but this is the reason so many others don’t. Someone did a study and found that in a typical 3 hr game there’s only about 12-15 minutes of actual action happening. (Balls being fielded, base running….) The positive side of this is the suspense though. Let’s go Oakland! 😃

      Baseball is such a great sport :)
      My city hadn't had a team since 1960. In 2005 the league created the Washington Nationals, and for years we were terrible (90-100 loses per season).
      Those years hurt but were nothing compared to when we finally became GOOD and still lost in the playoffs ('09-'18).
      All of that pain, the close game agonies, the painful collapses, all of it mixed with the toughed out victories, and miracle finishes to create the 2019 team that started the year 19 - 31 with a .01 chance of making the playoffs that year.
      That team won our first World Series ever :)
      I love baseball! 💘⚾️💗💪😎😊

    Chewing tobacco is a type of smokeless tobacco product that is placed between the cheek and lower gum to draw out its flavor. Some users actively chew it, others do not. It consists of coarsely chopped aged tobacco that is flavored and often sweetened; it is not ground fine like dipping tobacco is! Unwanted juices are then spat out into a cup which is always kept nearby. The cup can be pretty nasty after a while......LOL

    Billy Beane was a spectacular fielder, but struggled pathetically at the plate, he actually was part of two world series winning teams in the late 80s but did so as a bench player, and only came in to defend leads. As a fielder he would make highlight reel plays every game, but just could not get on base. he ended his career with a fielding percentage of .995.

      I think the film maker did an excellent job of explaining enough to the audience that they could follow what was happening, without boring the baseball fan. it's more about the stories of finding a different approach and overcoming obstacles and personal relationships and growth than about the sport. a lot of other sports movies either make it too hard for anyone with no knowledge of the game to understand and they are lost or they make over explain every detail which turns off the real fans of the sport.

There are some universal themes sure, but the characters in their roles and thus situations they faced will be difficult to grasp without the requisite knowledge. This movie was a great choice! If you’re looking for any other great movies to react to. I would highly recommend the movie The curious case of Benjamin button. Due to it having both the same actor as this movie, Brad Pitt and the reaction you guy’s did for Forrest Gump a little while ago. I think you guy’s would love it!!!

    Baseball is all about numbers - always has been. Look on the back of any baseball card..it's all stats. Bill James just put a logical look at the stats. Billy Beane followed what James did. Also..it's not THAT hard for a catcher to move to first - catchers spend their career digging balls out of the dirt. Almost every catcher ends up at first when their knees give out.

    This movie was ridiculous from a historical perspective because it completely ignored the top 3 starting pitchers Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder, and Barry Zito. The starting pitching was EASILY the biggest reason why the Oakland A's were successful during those years....and Moneyball doesnt even mention them!

    Also Art Howe the manager of the A’s didn’t like how he was portrayed. He hated how he was made to look like an old school guy refusing to get with the times

    Great reaction! I enjoy the movie a lot. I’m not a huge baseball fan, so I’m definitely out of the loop. But unfortunately while watching this movie again today, and looking up Jeremy Giambi, I learned that he took his life with a gun earlier this year in February. I hope he’s at peace

    The other reason he doesn't stay to watch the games is because baseball players can be very superstitious. When they do something different and win a game or get a hit, they keep doing it. Probably at some point he started not coming to the games and got it in his head that it was unlucky for him to watch the games in person. In fact they almost lost that game that could have ended their winning streak when he turned around and went back to the stadium and he walked out into the stands.

    People involved in baseball are very superstitious, which is why Billy Beane doesn't watch the games because he thinks it's bad luck. Also, a lot of baseball players chew tobacco, which is why they're constantly spitting into cups.
