Moneyball mostly worked. The A's were winning 100 games every year (elite level) despite having one of the lowest payrolls in the game while Billy Beane implemented "moneyball". Because they understood player and statistical analysis better than other teams. The same thing is still true in baseball today.
Yep. One only has to look at the San Francisco Giants winning 107 games this year, while spending significantly less than the Dodgers did to win one game less than the Giants.
The one drawback now is that every team is using statistics to make player decisions, so it’s not the advantage it used to be. But it can still allow you to put together a solid team without having to spend like the Yankees or Dodgers to do it. The one place it has its drawbacks is in the playoffs. There just aren’t enough games for the numbers to even out, so you need a little luck. But what team doesn’t need a few bounces to go their way to win a championship?
Baseball is all about numbers. I was ok, not good, but I could run, and hit homers. I’m fairly certain I stole more bases than the rest of my high school team combined; if not, it was close.
Even if I wasn’t starting that day, I was subbed as a runner. The other team knew I was going to steal and usually I did it. Bad defender, really bad, but I could run and knock.
It absolutely worked. The problem is that it works for everyone else too.
Also everyone in all sports use analytics now, it certainly works
The funny thing is that Earl Weaver recognized the value of walks back in the 60's. But it seems like that knowledge was somehow lost until Billy Beane started working the system to get walks for cheap.
Billy Beane just didn’t play as well in the big leagues like everyone expected. Sometimes people who play baseball or basketball or football really well in high school or college just don’t play well in the big leagues for whatever reason. It just happens that way sometimes…and that’s what happened with Billy Beane.
he was overrated and drafted too high coming out of high school because the scouts back then only judged players by what they saw with their own eyes and saw a handsome 18 year old 6'4" kid from Southern California who could hit the ball far, run, field and throw but who didn't have the emotional maturity to be able to deal with failure on the field. He would have benefitted from getting drafted later on instead of in the first round and taking the college scholarship where he could have had a lot more time to learn and develop and 4 years later re-enter the draft at age 22 with a lot more wisdom, strength and skill.
@@billymuellerTikTok yep. That’s the “for whatever reason” I was talking about.
"It's a metaphor." is a subtle point and one of the best scenes in the movie. It's Jonah Hill's character telling Brad Pitt's Billy Beane that Beane had hit a home run with his new Moneyball approach and didn't even know it. Beane changed the way baseball is done and really all sports these days.
It really isn't, Brad Pitt's character knew he did, he understood the metaphor.
RIP and long live Philip Seymour Hoffman (July 23, 1967 - February 2, 2014), aged 46
You will always be remembered as a legend.
Never seen a reaction to this! Such a good movie. “How can you not be romantic about baseball”?
agree, great movie!!
He's from Europe , Europe is soccer, soccer and soccer they don't care for anything else.
A couple of American sports stories you all would easily love
1. Remember the Titans
2. Friday Night Lights
3. White Men Can’t Jump
4. Mystery Alaska
5. Major League
Rudy
Remember the titans was my favorite movie as a kid
Miracle
HELL YEAH one of my favorite movies...surprised you guys are reacting to it. We need more Larry!
Baseball is a truly magical sport. No clock, all patience. I hope you all get to attend a professional game some day. It’s a game that has brought grown men to their knees in an emotional bliss. It’s more than just a game to Americans. It’s why it is our national pastime.
The no clock thing is also what drives some people crazy about it too. So much downtime. I like baseball but this is the reason so many others don’t. Someone did a study and found that in a typical 3 hr game there’s only about 12-15 minutes of actual action happening. (Balls being fielded, base running….) The positive side of this is the suspense though. Let’s go Oakland! 😃
He's chewing tobacco and spitting the juice in a cup. You can't swallow it.
Wow I love this movie! You don't see too many reactions to it, but Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill did well in it.
I never expected to see anyone react to this. I'm excited. I empathize with Billy Beane's story. I was also once a highly rated baseball prospect that didn't make it.
Thank you for reacting to this movie! It's a cool story. I laughed when Lia got excited when the movie started showing them winning and their strategy started working. Great reaction guys.
I love watching Lia, the way her eyes move, taking in everything on screen.
Get a clue.
What an unexpected movie reaction. I mean, I'm not complaining. I like these kinds of movies.
Great movie :) Baseball is my favorite sport and they do a great job capturing the magic of it :)
"You did good Billy." That's what every man wants too hear :) 💗💗💘⚾️😎
How can you not be romantic about baseball.
Baseball is such a great sport :)
My city hadn't had a team since 1960. In 2005 the league created the Washington Nationals, and for years we were terrible (90-100 loses per season).
Those years hurt but were nothing compared to when we finally became GOOD and still lost in the playoffs ('09-'18).
All of that pain, the close game agonies, the painful collapses, all of it mixed with the toughed out victories, and miracle finishes to create the 2019 team that started the year 19 - 31 with a .01 chance of making the playoffs that year.
That team won our first World Series ever :)
I love baseball! 💘⚾️💗💪😎😊
Nice to see you more Larry! And that you guys are watching some stuff that's a bit different :)
'Gifted' is a great movie starring Chris Evans (Captain America) that I never see anyone react to, and is a really nice film that flew under the radar a bit.
Happy New Year!
There's a video on CZcams that plays the movie home run and the real life home run side by side and it's almost exactly the same, from the announcer comments to the hand gestures Hatteberg makes while rounding the bases.
Lol I never thought I'd see someone reacting to this. One of my favorite filmss ever, this movie got me heavily devoted into baseball's analytical statistics.
I've seen it way too many times, and I always relish the fact my team (Anaheim Angels) won the WS the season this takes place. Athletic fans never get true happiness :)
They did such a great job of translating the book to something more consumable for a mass audience. Even my wife who hates baseball really liked it
I missed this in theaters. I'm glad I saw this on video. Great movie!
Anyone recommend “Field of Dreams” or “The Sand Lot”, yet?
if you want to see a great movie involving the Boston Red Sox, and the year they won the World Series, what "Fever Pitch"
Holy s***!!! This is so great that you're checking out this gem. I'm not even into sports and I honestly can't tell you how many times I've watched this flick.
Loved the reaction :)
this movie is a great gateway to get people into baseball - I know many people who loved it and knew nothing about baseball
Holy shit!*
I will never understand why young people censor themselves.
@@OriginalPuro cause TikTok suspends you did cursing and then bans your account if you get suspended too many times.
Baseball here in America is a massive sport, watch many movie or tv show from the past 70 years and there is a chance you'll find a baseball reference.
I'm really happy and surprised that you all did this movie. I think it's great you all are branching out to different movies.
I think some movies you all should try to check out is Rocky series, Scarface, Bourne Identity, "Sunshine", Interview with a Vampire, "A few Good Men", "Pelican Brief", Gattica, Almost Famous, Raising Arizona, Deja Vu, Blade Runner, Jumanji, Rain Man, Crimson Tide, The Hunt for Red October, Amadeus, Contact, American History X, The Abyss, Fargo, No Country for Old men, Die Hard 2 & 3, First Bood: Rambo, Total Recall, Enemy at the Gates.
Good on you to "react" to a lesser known movie.
Plenty of great movies out there that no one is reviewing/reacting to.
PLEASE continue to do reactions to good/great non-flashy, but well made made movies. THIS movie should be an inspiration and challenge to you to find those "dimonds in the rough" that everybody else is missing. Good luck. I just joined the Patron subscribers because I support THIS kind of reaction site.
All my life I've never been a baseball fan. I barely have a rudimentary knowledge of the rules, and statistics. So, naturally when this movie came out, I wasn't interested. I saw a clip with Pitt and Hill, and was so impressed with their acting that it piqued my curiosity, I ended up watching the movie, and really enjoyed it.
Chewing tobacco is a type of smokeless tobacco product that is placed between the cheek and lower gum to draw out its flavor. Some users actively chew it, others do not. It consists of coarsely chopped aged tobacco that is flavored and often sweetened; it is not ground fine like dipping tobacco is! Unwanted juices are then spat out into a cup which is always kept nearby. The cup can be pretty nasty after a while......LOL
"The Naked Gun" (1988) - got an awesome baseball sequence 😊
Anyway, Thx for your reaction vids 👍😀
Moneyball worked not only in baseball, its being done in soccer/football. Liverpool is doing it too.
Hallelujah someone else finally reacts to my favorite movie. It's a miracle.
The part about Billy not watching the games is true, except the reasoning explained in the book is that he’s preventing himself from judging players subjectively instead of sticking to the data.
Billy Beane was a spectacular fielder, but struggled pathetically at the plate, he actually was part of two world series winning teams in the late 80s but did so as a bench player, and only came in to defend leads. As a fielder he would make highlight reel plays every game, but just could not get on base. he ended his career with a fielding percentage of .995.
Kind of ironic given the theme of the movie. Why do we want him? Because he gets on base.
Good to see you Larry! Love those GASPS from Lia! They always make me jump lol.
Who's Larry? Is he close to anyone?
FYI Jonah Hill’s character is true but the name was changed due to the real guy not liking how he was portrayed in the movie. That same guy would become general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers (my team). Which explains a lot for when the Dodgers would get certain players.
And I’m from the area. Santa Rosa which is 1 hour from Oakland and San Francisco (the other city across the bay bridge that connects the 2). It was crazy here. I was a high school sophomore than junior when this movie took place in 2002
if you liked this, check out 'Draft Day' with Kevin Costner which is a fictionalized movie about a General Manager for a Football (American Football, not soccer) team and also 'Jerry Macguire' which is a fictionalized movie with Tom Cruise as a sports agent and 'Disney's: The Rookie' with Dennis Quaid which is based on the true story of a high school baseball coach who had once a been promising young pitcher but injured his arm and had several surgeries and retired but was able to recover from the injury years later and make it back to the big leagues at age 35.
Brad Pitt eats his way to almost winning…
Happy New Year, Homies.
I read through the comments below and definitely agree w/2 of them:
React to DISTRICT 9 and INTO THE WILD.
Go Oaks!!!!
The Visalia Oaks are now called the Rawhide and I used to watch their games a lot
Larry, thank you for featuring an underrated film that doesn't usually make the CZcams rounds. Your reactions with Lia are pleasant to watch. Another overlooked movie is Hero (2002) directed by Zhang Yimou. Only James VS Cinema has reacted to it, but I think you and the ladies would enjoy it for a variety of reasons.
They're spitting chewing tobacco
Love this movie. Some historical oversights but a very good movie with great performances and a great cast. Love it.
Now you have to watch a movie called Fever Pitch. The secondary storyline is the Red Sox season where they finally win the World Series.
Are there 2 microphones on his boom arm? It looks like there is a smaller mic at the end of his yellow cord….and then a wire from that going into the bigger mic? Why is that and/or what is that?
Its about the oakland A" one of 30 MLB teams in america, also if a city has a MLB team it probably also has NBA, NFL and NHL team. Some cities even had two MLB teams.
A little trivia the MLB is the second wealthiest sports league in the world with the NFL the wealthiest.
This is a great movie, but it’s gonna be tough to understand if you don’t have a basic knowledge of baseball, recruiting, trading, salary caps etc.
I think the film maker did an excellent job of explaining enough to the audience that they could follow what was happening, without boring the baseball fan. it's more about the stories of finding a different approach and overcoming obstacles and personal relationships and growth than about the sport. a lot of other sports movies either make it too hard for anyone with no knowledge of the game to understand and they are lost or they make over explain every detail which turns off the real fans of the sport.
That was the first thing I thought when i saw this reaction posted. There are some universal themes sure, but the characters in their roles and thus situations they faced will be difficult to grasp without the requisite knowledge. The movie does try to give some exposition but it still requires some background and you can miss some things like why he traded Pena or the montage with players in how they are approaching the season. That being said, these two did a great job in their reaction to the emotional pieces and characters.
@@Neo6364 they put a lot of great humor in it too - they missed the funniest line in the movie when Billy Beane and Ron Washington go to Scott Hattenberg's house to sign him and tell him they want him to play first base and Hattenberg is worried about replacing Jason Giambi and says "what about the fans?" and Ron Washington says to Billy Beane " Yeah, maybe I can teach one of them"... also, I forgot that Chris Pratt was in this
i love this movie......keep up the good work guys
For the big game at the end most of this movie uses footage of the actual games.
for all the girls the 'homies', 'Meet Joe Black' 1998
moneyball and the big short back to back! amazing! thank you guys, finally someone is tackling these films!
he;s spitting sunflower seeds. its a weird baseball tradition
Yeah in any team sport today. The use of statistics to decide on who gets bought and how to set up a team is more than u could imagine. It genuinely works wonders in world football. There are teams that can spend millions but then there are teams that spend millions on millions. In those scenarios those above average teams who have a hefty budget but nothing like the supper Rick could now compete and actually win titles.
FYI the Cleveland Indians are now the Cleveland Guardians.
how do yall you Homies know each other?? would be cool to have a Q&A explaining how you all met and what not !!! :D
They did a live show where they talk about how they all started. I think it is still on the channel. It was really fun learning who knew who before and how they got together.
"Everything is about numbers." In all sports really but most especially in baseball. It's funny, I've thought this all my long life, then along came Bill James and said I was right.
I too like the odd chemistry between Peter and Billy. In fact the two actors deserve immense praise and top flight awards for their portrayals. As you might guess, this is one of my favorite movies.
One thing that does puzzle me about the movie is the emphasis on his daughter. No, I don't say to ignore her completely but she seems to get too much screen time for her importance to the story.
at 22:14 he is spitting sunflower seed shells.
I wish I could apply logic like this to dating
Both are numbers games. Practice, practice, practice.
The a's gave Billy a ring despite him not really mattering for their title run in 89 and his final chance as a player...that's why he stayed loyal to them despite the offer....
BIlly Beane and these Oakland A's changed baseball. Every team now uses this kind of statistical analysis to help build their teams. Although he didn't win a championship, other teams took what he did and won championships using the ideas that he used with the Oakland A's. This type of player analysis has also spread to all other sports such as basketball and soccer. Teams all around the world in all sports do what Billy Beane and the Oakland A's started.
Even changed the non-sports world.
one of my favorite movies i think the problem with the way they went too the playoffs is that they actually shouldve have made more switches with the players only because most teams will make switches i dont know it seems like it would work
Brad Pitt is in the movie so that means it should be good....actually a true statement. Almost every movie he's ever in is good.
Even if the movie is bad, Pitt turns in a solid performance.
he's in a lot of my all time favorite movies... Fight Club, Se7en, 12 Monkeys, Sleepers, Inglourious Basterds, Snatch, Legends of the Fall, Interview with the Vampire, True Romance, A River Runs Through It, Burn After Reading, Fury, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
@@billymuellerTikTok You should join the discord if you haven't already. I've been lobbying for True Romance for over a year it feels like. And you're right, all great movies!
@@LindsnDarth LOL I don't even know what discord is - I was actually looking it up just this morning and also looking up to see what a NFT was
@@LindsnDarth I'll check it out - been spending all my free time on youtube and Tiktok though
If my favorite baseball movie
The first base thing is hilarious if you’ve ever played baseball. I played left field for years, then I started hitting home runs; moved to second base. I had no idea what I was doing there, but I could hit the ball good so the coach just moved me. Didn’t make sense to me then, doesn’t make sense now. I could hit the ball just fine playing defense in the outfield.
Hatteberg couldn't throw because he had an elbow injury. Didn't you watch the movie? I'm just teasing you. Yeah that's why he couldn't play in the outfield.
@lpr Oh I know, just pointing out switching positions isn’t easy, even if there is a reason for it.
Billy is still in Oakland today
This movie was a great choice! If you’re looking for any other great movies to react to. I would highly recommend the movie The curious case of Benjamin button. Due to it having both the same actor as this movie, Brad Pitt and the reaction you guy’s did for Forrest Gump a little while ago. I think you guy’s would love it!!!
Holt would be proud
Baseball is all about numbers - always has been. Look on the back of any baseball card..it's all stats. Bill James just put a logical look at the stats. Billy Beane followed what James did. Also..it's not THAT hard for a catcher to move to first - catchers spend their career digging balls out of the dirt. Almost every catcher ends up at first when their knees give out.
Great movie. Thanks for taking a chance reacting to this one.
I love this movie. Thanks for reacting to it.
Angels won the World Series that year. Watch the Doc on the Angels. I'm an Angel fan
"Bull Durham" great baseball movie!
38:18 A Home Run!
Please Ellie, you do watch Invictus, the Eastwood movie.
This movie was ridiculous from a historical perspective because it completely ignored the top 3 starting pitchers Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder, and Barry Zito. The starting pitching was EASILY the biggest reason why the Oakland A's were successful during those years....and Moneyball doesnt even mention them!
Also Art Howe the manager of the A’s didn’t like how he was portrayed. He hated how he was made to look like an old school guy refusing to get with the times
You should also check out the movie 42, another really good baseball film
You need to watch Field Of Dreams next!
players dont care what team they play on , most arent even from the city that the team is located in and over a fourth arent even from the US.They just go who ever pay the most amount.
Just so you known this is a true story.
They didn't understood one bit of that movie, it was painful to watch x)
And for people saying you have to know baseball to understand that movie, sorry but no i've never watch a single game of baseball i know pratically nothing about it and i understood pretty much everything the first time i saw the movie
Great reaction! I enjoy the movie a lot. I’m not a huge baseball fan, so I’m definitely out of the loop. But unfortunately while watching this movie again today, and looking up Jeremy Giambi, I learned that he took his life with a gun earlier this year in February. I hope he’s at peace
39:30 Proof of Concept
I enjoy watching a reaction to this video from someone who doesn't know the game of baseball. It shows baseball is still a romantic sport
Love Moneyball so much.
The guys who were spitting in cups in the movie were doing so because they were using chewing tobacco
The Homies, Having watched this film on baseball. May I suggest you react to another baseball film, " Bull Durham." The film star's Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins. It's magic.Cheers, Chris Perry.
What the A’s did changes scouting forever
The other reason he doesn't stay to watch the games is because baseball players can be very superstitious. When they do something different and win a game or get a hit, they keep doing it. Probably at some point he started not coming to the games and got it in his head that it was unlucky for him to watch the games in person. In fact they almost lost that game that could have ended their winning streak when he turned around and went back to the stadium and he walked out into the stands.
Have you guys ever thought of viewing "Little Shop of Horrors"?
I just watched this movie a few weeks ago for the first time. I really enjoyed it, thought it was a great movie!
This video was so amazing keep up the good work Lia I love you so much as my little sister
You're all welcome to become Oakland A's fans.
I'm just glad to see Larry again Larry you need a only fans 😂
Pimp,, on Only Fans,,yes I agree.
Thanks for the video. I enjoyed it.
Sean Penn’s Into the Wild please in the near future
That was really good
same is happening in AFL(Australian football) rich clubs pilfering weaker clubs just recently Gold Coast lost rankin to an established club.
I thought this movie was boring and i love baseball
People involved in baseball are very superstitious, which is why Billy Beane doesn't watch the games because he thinks it's bad luck. Also, a lot of baseball players chew tobacco, which is why they're constantly spitting into cups.
