American Shocks Jungle Village by Speaking Ancient Mayan Language

- I've been living in Mexico recently where I've learned to speak the Yucatec Maya language, the indigenous language of the Yucatan peninsula which has been spoken in this region for thousands of years. In this video I wander around the jungle villages of Tulum and surrounding areas and try to speak to people in Maya. I'm not perfect in Maya but fortunately I can also speak some Spanish, and so we speak in a mixture of Spanish and Maya. Come back next week to see me order a whole bunch of food in Maya!
This is the platform that I used to become fluent in Spanish in 20 days:

In learning other tongues you begin to pick up mannerisms that hint at what somebody means and you can also breakdown the basic everyday chatting topics. So 100% understanding isn’t needed to get the gist of what they’re saying, but merely following the flow and adding in your knowledge becomes to work wonders.

funny how i know exactly where hes at in the beginning of the vid. he had to walk a few miles from a nonfamous archaeological site off of a random highway. props to him
By the way, the Yucatec Maya word for blue is CHOOJ (rhymes somewhat with chalk), but 90% of the people say ÁZUL, with the accent (about half the time) on the 1st syllable of the Spanish word AZÚL (accent on last syllable). The Mayas have borrowed many, many Spanish words and often then apply their own sound system of pronunciation to these borrowed words. We of course to the same in English. The word Llama, which is Spanish sounds like Yama is usually (mis-)pronounced with an L sound by us English speakers. There is no judgement here as to "right or wrong," it is just a matter of people assimilating things into their own language.
Colour is the sort of thing that does get borrowed a lot, because besides some basic concepts (white, black, 'dark', red, 'green-yellow') most cultures just let the artists deal with the technicalities.
All the Greeks could paint walls in a variety of colours but what did Homer sing about - "red", "wine dark sea", and not much else. Even Gladstone had to notice that Homer's vocabulary for colour was terrible. Probably why the Greeks themselves suspected that Homer was blind.
I mean, even the post-Roman West dropped the old Latin word for "white" and picked up the German word "blank" / "blanco" / "blanche".

I’d like to see him speak Tuvan or Hebrew
I appreciate seeing videos like this where you are struggling with the language because you make it look so easy in all your videos (at least to my ears). It reminds me that even you have to start somewhere, so it isn't out of the grasp of reality for me to try to learn another language.
That is so Kool 😍😍😍 keep learning more and more
After just a week and a half, and he's just only roughly struggling. The fact he can become this adept to the language after 10-11 days of learning is amazing-I wouldn't be surprised if in the future, he's the one to learn, document, and translate some of the obscure indigenous islander languages or when contact with aliens is made.
There's definitely some savant-type stuff going on here, people just don't go around learning this much in little over a week no matter what techniques you use.
It's super amazing and I gotta say I'm a little jelly.
@@McKack the more languages you learn the easier the process becomes
@@champnotchicken4318 yeah the guys been learning for a decade now so hes probably got his learning strategy for languages down to an art, but hes still very gifted that he can become conversational in just a week or two
I learnt about 400 words of ukrainian over about 20 combined hours of duolingo. I lacked people to talk to tho and my personal life got in the way so I haven't been able to continue
@Carson Baker you have an ego.
It must feel amazing to be married to a partner who can support you everywhere like his wife does. Always behind the camera or behind the scenes somewhere doing an amazing job. Lots of respect to supportive people.
I’m just now finding out about your channel and totally loving it 🙏🏼😁
I am so impressed with your language skills. I'm, slowly trying to get a grip on Spanish. I wish I had your skills and fortitude.
Man I would hate for my nickname to be “Armadillo Neck” 😂
@hotsauce67924 - my nickname is cocklargo which translates to "elephant dick"!
Some elephants have small ones tho you should change it to horse
My nickname is Wrongway Man and I am a great navigator and pilot.
Yellow neck lol
@@Weezy10580 that’s Amarillo... armadillo is an animal 🤣
Mayans: armadillo neck where you going?
White man: armadillo neck?
Mayans: we were speaking to the captain
XD
Latin american nick names are the BEST!!! Eg. Calling a fat guy "skinny/flaco" or a skinny guy "fat/gordo". My Colombian friend said he had a chubby childhood friend everyone would call "bola de grassa" which translates to : Ball of grease.
People appreciate when you take the time to understand their culture, great job
I would never think that you would try learning Maya. Thanks for taking your time to travel to Yucatán and sharing your experience. 🙏🏽
