In this song, he's describing his days shooting-up drugs under a bridge in LA. He's describing his feelings of depression and desolation during those dark days living on the streets.
nope it was a poem about his heroin addiction.. drawing blood under the bridge is priming the needle or dose... The Record producer Rick Rubin talk him Anthony Kenez into making the poem a song.
A few days for me. From best friends dying, to break ups, I can relate that line to many moments. And I’ve actually listened to this song on some of those days. But we r still here, stronger than we were those days.
Amazing that truly beautiful music can reach into your soul and heal you when it’s made from pure human experience and emotion, it resonates beyond what we could ever imagine
RHCP does lots of songs about heroin and lots more about California but it's when they do songs about doing heroin in California they are at their best
Such a great song about him overcoming the darkest days of his life and pursuing a life of happiness. Theres an interview on youtube of him saying the song is about when he was buying heroin from mexican gangsters under a bridge in LA after days of not sleeping. Then he realized things need to change, he wrote this song, achieved mainstream success, and the rest is history...
What I love about your channel is the it makes me really listen to the lyrics. I have probably heard this song a hundred times but never really listened to the words. Being a mom of a son who went through heroin addiction, depression and homelessness , this song really spoke to me. My son has fortunately come out on the other side and is living a great life.
Shot up under the bridge- “that’s where I drew some blood.” IF, (I forget) if you haven’t done “give it away”, it’s a MUST- I also suggest “could have lied.” Highly- 💜❤️✌️✨
RHCP has never, ever disappointed me. I could buy an album without hearing one note and would be satisfaction guaranteed! This song is about living on the streets and being caught in addiction, " (Under the bridge downtown)Is where I drew some blood (Under the bridge downtown) I could not get enough (Under the bridge downtown) Forgot about my love (Under the bridge downtown) I gave my life away Yeah, yeah" Oh and yes Flea is an AMAZING bass player!
I agree about the reliability thing. Despite their wide enough range of genres I always know I’m going to like their music. They haven’t let me down once since I started listening in around 2005, and I don’t expect it to happen now after all these years.
This is a song about his drug addiction. But I ❤️ how you actually listen to lyrics and try to think about what they mean. You’re great. And agreed that this song have different interpretations based on where you are in life.

This song as well as Otherside, Scar Tissue and likely many more, were written from the perspective of an addict reflecting back or trying to move forward, but the feelings are universal. I heard this song at summer camp when I was 11 years old. Even then the lyrics and melody of the chorus resonated with me and tugged at my heart: "I don't ever wanna feel like I did that day!" I didn't have a specific day I identified it with, but I already knew what it was to want to run from a bad feeling. No concept of drugs or addiction, just longing.

One of my favorite bands. Every band member is outstanding - they complement each other. One of the things why I like RHCP so much: if you don't know the band and only hear one song and you think you can put them in a category, the next song will surprise you with something completely new! They use all styles of music to express themselves without bending or locking themselves. They have soooo many many great songs. RHCP | Can’t Stop (Live @ Slane Castle) ♥️ 🎧 🔥
Also a song that ends, well, in an unexpected death ... “under the bridge, I drew some blood, under the bridge, I could not get enough... under the bridge, I gave my life away...”
The additional vocals in the last chorus (singing the "under the bridge downtown" lines) are attributed to "Gail Frusciante And Her Friends", Gail Frusciante was the mother of the band's guitarist John Frusciante. The lead singer is Anthony Keidis. The bassist goes by his stage name "Flea" - his real name is Michael Balzary. Chad Smith is the band's drummer. This song has a very epic ending, in addition the choir (Gail Frusciante And Her Friends), an organ can be heard in the background during this section, played by Brendan O'Brien, who himself, was the engineer for that whole album (the album is called "Blood Sugar Sex Magik"), and the producer is Rick Rubin. Brendan O'Brien later became a music producer in his own right, and is very talented musician, specifically a multi-instrumentalist, who plays keyboards, guitar, and percussion instruments. There's also 100% Jimi Hendrix influence in John Frusciante's guitar work on this song. And let's not forget about Flea, one of the best bass players ever!
The bass line in this song is incredible, and one of my favourite ones I ever learned. I learnt it when I was about 15, and I was just starting to get really into bass. Red hot chili peppers forever!
I was in 2nd/3rd grade and living in a shelter with my family. I just believed my parents when they told us we were just looking for a house. One day I was in a church next to the shelter where the kids were giving a place to be during the day. One of the people watching us had the radio on and this came on. I stood, listened to this song and even at my age realized what was going on. That moment is burned in to my mind.
This song is also, I believe, about how he used to do drugs. If I’m not mistaken, there’s the part in the lyrics that says “under the bridge, is where I drew some blood, in the bridge I couldn’t get enough”. So I think I’m a way he was saying that in Los Angeles he was lonely and he was his only friend so he turned to drugs and that became his friend. But I understand that he is sober now I think. He’s recovered since I hope! But yeah, an iconic song for sure! Love the guitar riff!
Great band with a super positive message. Most of the members have suffered & struggled through addictions and lost a founding member through it but have came through it and produced some fabulous music 🎶
Their bass player, Flea, did quite some cool stuff outside RHCP as well. Perhaps you can check out something by the super group 'Atoms For Peace' or him playing trumpet on the sad and hauntingly beautiful collaboration with Thom Yorke, called 'Daily Battles', which Yorke wrote for the movie 'Motherless Brooklyn'. It had the creator and lead actor Edward Norton burst into tears when hearing it for the first time.
They are incredibly open about their lives and Snow is another example. I think was the song that hooked me. Great band. Thank you for the memories and take care of yourself please, Mate

I saw them live when this song first came out at a Chicago venue. John Cusak was at the same show in the audience -he wasn't as famous then, and not too friendly when approached.
After reading Anthony book, it tell the story behind this song which I'm sure everyone knows now... but this is still one of my favourite songs for RHCP... more please Jay🙏

This was a mega hit at the time and hearing his voice like this showed us there incredible range they had. Love me some RHCP! React to “give it away now“!
4.30.. that's when the guitarists mother starts to sing.. right then everything else is forgotten
It's nice to hear modern, composed music from real bands.
Your reaction was gold, J 👌✌️
Desecration Smile, Stadium Arcadium, Wet Sand, Otherside and Dosed are my personal favs of RHCP

Btw, d song was about his friend... n his friend is LA.
The song was about LA
Would love for you to react to their recording of “Love Rollercoaster” and the other songs on this album- Blood Sugar Sex Magic was 🔥🔥🔥! Especially “Give It Away”, “Breaking the Girl,” and “Apache Rose Peacock”. They will give you a good idea of the rabbit hole and range...
I saw them live when this song first came out at a Chicago venue. John Cusak was at the same show in the audience -he wasn't as famous then, and not too friendly when approached.
"Hold up hold up...."....Yelp, never gets old..
Great song, they have such a distinctive sound, unique to them
Love this reaction. Love reaction channels that keep the songs diverse. Keep killing it.
After reading Anthony book, it tell the story behind this song which I'm sure everyone knows now... but this is still one of my favourite songs for RHCP... more please Jay🙏
Great song, great band! You should try "Otherside", another amazing song.
I learned about RHCP’s through my son. I finally got the chance to see them perform at a few festivals, including Coachella & Kaaboo. They are awesome! Thank you for the reaction!
LOVE me some Red Hot Chili Peppers! My favorite is "Hard to Concentrate" played at a few weddings! Adventures of Raindance Maggie, Dark Necessities (more recent) and Scar Tissue!! Scar Tissue is also his autobiography, named the same..incredible book! Seriously do "Hard To Concentrate"..way different feel and beat! Watch the video version with the girl and boy..tells a story!
Soul to Squeeze is another great one from them.
