I think the answer to your question about the meaning is that you already answered it. This song as well as Otherside, Scar Tissue and likely many more, were written from the perspective of an addict reflecting back or trying to move forward, but the feelings are universal. Many roads can carry the traveler to feeling lost, despondent, different, lonely, etc... and that is how they connect with the song. Many songwriters will answer the question of what the meaning of the song is by asking what it means to the person asking, at this time. Which brings in another reality to the timelessness of most songs. The song originally meant one thing to the author, but years down the road, it may end up meaning something else to the author.

I heard this song at summer camp when I was 11 years old. Even then the lyrics and melody of the chorus resonated with me and tugged at my heart: "I don't ever wanna feel like I did that day!" I didn't have a specific day I identified it with, but I already knew what it was to want to run from a bad feeling. No concept of drugs or addiction, just longing.

The additional vocals in the last chorus (singing the "under the bridge downtown" lines) are attributed to "Gail Frusciante And Her Friends", Gail Frusciante was the mother of the band's guitarist John Frusciante. The lead singer is Anthony Keidis. The bassist goes by his stage name "Flea" - his real name is Michael Balzary. Chad Smith is the band's drummer. This song has a very epic ending, in addition the choir (Gail Frusciante And Her Friends), an organ can be heard in the background during this section, played by Brendan O'Brien, who himself, was the engineer for that whole album (the album is called "Blood Sugar Sex Magik"), and the producer is Rick Rubin. Brendan O'Brien later became a music producer in his own right, and is very talented musician, specifically a multi-instrumentalist, who plays keyboards, guitar, and percussion instruments. There's also 100% Jimi Hendrix influence in John Frusciante's guitar work on this song. And let's not forget about Flea, one of the best bass players ever!

If I’m not mistaken, there’s the part in the lyrics that says “under the bridge, is where I drew some blood, in the bridge I couldn’t get enough”. So I think I’m a way he was saying that in Los Angeles he was lonely and he was his only friend so he turned to drugs and that became his friend. But I understand that he is sober now I think. He’s recovered since I hope! But yeah, an iconic song for sure! Love the guitar riff!

Hope you're having a blessed day my friend 🤴🌈. This is a good song. RHCP came out in my young adulthood....the first I heard was Give it away and was hooked.

Man, this song takes me right back to that moment in time...
And I love the comment about the street giving him the love that his partner didn't. Because his partner was heroin. You are too pure for this world. ❤

I like to look at this song is kind of a personal journey for the lead singer and his heroin addiction that he was going through

I felt like watching some rock music reactions this morning RHCP really let it all out here ....Anthony told his heartbreaking story and the rest is history ....John Fruschiante's mom brought in her choir and they went offffffff.Great group great vocals bass guitar and drums

The song is about John Frusciante (the guitarist) who was shooting heroin and living under a bridge in LA... hence when he went broke, he was withdrawaling and never wants to feel that way again. As an ex heroin addict.. this song really hits home. I've met john backstage 13 years ago at a show in Minneapolis.. he's a great guy. They all are, and I'm so happy to see him back in the band.

Actually Anthony Kiedis wrote it about himself being an addict. It was just a personal poem at first, but then their producer Rick Rubin found it and said it should totally be a song. But I'm very damn sure Frusciante can relate just as much as Anthony

I am a new subscriber. Got to say I love your channel with his variety and so much music I love and how are you really find things in every song. Red hot chili peppers was so hard hitting and you could just rage with them. But once under the bridge came out they took us to a different place. Even though he speaks about the dark times under the bridge, he walks down the streets of LA waving hi and talking to all the guys outside their stores like they know him and he feels at home. This was a mega hit at the time and hearing his voice like this showed us there incredible range they had. Love me some RHCP! React to “give it away now“!

I saw them live when this song first came out at a Chicago venue. John Cusak was at the same show in the audience -he wasn't as famous then, and not too friendly when approached.
