That iconic move is done entirely practically using special shoes that lock into a bolt onto the floor, the rest is pure leg strength. In addition to the movie, there was an arcade game that was actually pretty fun, you played a vaguely Michael looking gangster, made people dance with you, dance-fought them, and threw your hat that trailed sparkles and boomaranged back to you. So awesome.

  • @suem6004

Good choreography. Every move and pose of the dancers was choreographed. There is not a beat where an arm, leg, body, head did not have a place to be. Dancers’ bodies are instruments. Just as a trumpet player knows what note to play on what beat, so with dancers. Michael choreographed a bit but brought in choreographers too.
Yes, that forward sway was a trick boot. But magical to watch when it first came out and no one knew how it worked.

Michael Jackson would watch kids dance, and learn from them and improvise, so when the kid says he taught him everything he knows, this was an homage to the children he learned moves from as he watched them.
Beginning with Thriller, he began to work on his videos as though they were movie shorts, and this was signature for many of his videos and also drove up the cost and production of all music videos from that point forward after Thriller in 1983 for all other artists who followed.

He passed away before he could put on the show. But what they released was probably the most behind the scenes access any had ever gotten of the mind behind the mega shows.

This song brings me back to my elementary school tumbling club (circa late 1980's). At an assembly, we put on a performance -- where the beginners did forward rolls in a line down a tumbing mat, then the intermediates did cartwheels, and finally the advanced group did backflips... all to the tune of "Smooth Criminal". I was in the forward roll group. 🤣
