- This week we're combining our Trotec Speedy 360 laser cutter with a Mimaki UJF 6042 MKii UV printer to make some amazing UV printed mirrors made from acrylic!
Our first design is a wall mirror. We place our mirrored acrylic into our UV printer and print our design leaving the middle portion open. We made sure to print our registration marks so that our Trotec Vision camera system can pick them up on the laser and cut preceily where we had our cut line in our artwork.
The 2nd design is table top mirror, it's similar to our first design but we've added a stand using our TroGlass Frosted cast acrylic. We place the laser cut acrylic on our acrylic heat bender and bent it into the proper shape.
*PLEASE NOTE: Mimaki does not recommend regularly printing on mirrors with UV machines. Constant mirror printing could cause serious maintenance issues. The reason is because the UV light reflects back onto the heads and lamps and could cure ink onto them. This would lead to poor curing and possibly blocked nozzles. One must maintain the machine very well for this kind of work. It can be done, but it's not recommended as a regular workflow.

I have mimaki jfx 200 and I’m using LUS 120 Can I print on mirror as well ?
When I first bought the machine they told me to never print on mirror coz the reflection of uv light can affect the print heads
yes, mine too, my salesman also said that, never print on mirror.
How can bubbling of the ink be avoided when printing then cutting with that laser? I've seen alot say cut first then print but some jobs are better suited for print first then cut. Reverse printing can help but your channel has several videos where ink is on top and cut thru the top of different thickness of materials. Any insight would be greatly appreciated
DNice7807 that’s a great question! We never had any “bubbling” issues when cutting UV ink. We tried some UV printers where there was a “chipping” effect where the paint would chip off. However, we are happy to confirm ever since we teamed up with Mimaki that issue has stopped. The Mimaki inks and UV printer’s adhesion is excellent and doesnt chip at all when being cut (after UV printing). We always print first then cut because our JC Vision camera system reads the registration marks (on the print) and knows exactly where to cut based on our design file. We hope that clears things up.
@@TrotecLaserCanada I also have a mimaki what ink do you typically use? I'm getting slight pin hole bubbles when cutting, especially ink side up. 1/8" material. Ink face down helps but I have applications that require both top face printing and bottom face printing. Both benefit from printing first then cutting
what mode on mimaki to print the mirror? is it LD mode? because the print head move quite slow

You should never print on the mirror with uv printer!!
Hi Tim, you must really up your maintenance for this kind of work. It can be done, but it's not recommended as a regular workflow. A one off here and there would be fine.
For high production, we do recommend to UV print on regular acrylic and inlay the mirror afterwards.

Trotec Canada. This is a really bad idea. I realize this an old video and you've posted in the notes section that you don't advise this for normal production (nor does Mimaki). Righfully so, as this will cause thousands of dollars of damage and to repair/replace from completely ruined print heads. I have both platforms that you're using and was warned NOT TO DO THIS by Mimaki. There are other ways to accomplish the same effect. In my opinion you should either remove the video OR demostrate how to do an inlay over mirror using your same Trotec Materials...which our operations purchase week in and week out. Good Luck.
