I like the subpac for mixing, it's definitely a strange feeling to begin with, almost intrusive but after about 20-30 mins of using it, when your brain starts to forget that you're wearing it, then it becomes quite immersive.

Thanks for your very informative Video. I decided to purchase the KRK 8s2 for my home studio. I connected it to my 2 KRK Rokit 5 monitors and WOW!!! an absolutely incredible speaker. I was totally surprised and never expected this Subwoofer to be so high in quality, not only the woofer itself but also the high quality sound. The competitors are going to be jealous (not trying to be biased) when you take into consideration that it only has an 8 inch Speaker. Take my word for it the KRK is incredible!

Congrats are in order. Depending on room size, 2x 8-inch, 2x 10-inch, 1x 12-inch or 1x 15-inch might also work. I wouldn't go with Genelec subs, they have one model subwoofer with a single 5-inch cone! WTF is up with that?

2x Adam Sub 8 is what I recommend. They are really amazing. Two subwoofers will balance the way the sound reflects in the studio and it's easier to control.
I don't recommend subs that are pushing air into the ground. It's not an ideal solution for a clear sound and the floors materials will change the way it sounds too.
I also don't recommend reflective surfaces for the floors, such as parquet or rigid materials.

Was just coming back to this review. Thank you Sanjay. I have a pair of Adam Audio A7Vs and an upper end Logitech computer speaker setup, with a sub. I find myself switching over to my computer setup, which helps when mixing, but its missing a lot. I then switch over in mixing to my DT770 Pro's, which also helps me dig further into any muddiness, that computer speakers just don't deal with. I also often send myself the wav and listen on my iPhone, because its the worst speaker I own (lol). I've been thinking about adding a sub, and since I have the A7Vs, I almost pulled the trigger on their sub. I like listening through different sources. Now I am thinking about the JBL LSR310S or the KRKs. KRK rolled out a couple of new models, the S10.4 and the S8.4, since this review. #OntheFence 😅😂

I'm back living in an apartment again sure miss having a house and could play, listen, or work on music at any hour I wanted. I do want to be considerate of my neighbors for many reasons. First consideration I choose an bottom floor apartment so no bass rumbling downward. Second none of my music gear touches the walls to help reduce sound and bass coupling with a shared wall. Now most apartments I've lived in have carpeted floors which are good for reducing sound and bass from traveling, but that is issue for a downward shooting subwoofer. A lot of the sound is going to be absorbed by the carpet and not reflect out that well. That will make you the mixer want to crank the bass more and now unhappy neighbors. So if in an apartment with carpeted floors I'd go with a front firing subwoofer and put it as far away from you as you can get it, like behind you. Bass sound waves are big and take a couple feet for the sound to develop, if you are too close the bass is blowing by you and again your start cranking the volume and unhappy neighbors. If you use a front firing sub' a few feet behind you the bass sound should be fully developed when if get to you in your mixing position. Last consider the size of your room and size of the subwoofer speaker. Sure a big speaker looks and thumps a lot, but that big speaker needs to be cranked more to work efficiently. In a smaller room a smaller sub will be more effective and probably be more punchy sounding than thumpy.
Sanjay a few episodes talked about a sound analysis tool that EQ's you rmonitor sound for your room to eliminate big spikes or drops in the frequency range. If you get a subwoofer it would be good to use a tool like that to balance out your nearfield monitors and your subwoofer.
Update: If you're using a downward firing sub on a carpeted floor, you might want to put a piece of plywood under the sub to reflect the sound out.

Nice video! Could you please sometime make a video about the differences between subtractive, additive, fm, wavetable etc types of synthesis? I think that it would be very useful for people that want to learn how the synthesizers work. :D

Awesome video Sanjay! Appreciate your time and effort. I think the Genelec's 7360 is superior to most of these subwoofers listed (even though they are great!) because of it's SAM technology. Generally I find Genelecs speakers to have the best sounds for both tracking and mixing. I have tried all except the Behringer and Subpac. They don't come close. Another great sub is the Kalis 12W, it's about 1000W. Great job!

and between their subs (krks and genelecs) what would you choose ?
      THX!
dunno what to buy........I bought akg 371 for its rather flat frq-resp. and I think they are bassy and even muddy Godddd!......they were 250 ron (new 630!).....and buy the way.....do you think that an sure 1940 or abantone pro planar would be better ?.....
      THX!

Subpac totally changed how I monitor. Much easier to get bass clarity with lower volume and my ears are less tired after hours of producing. Anyone in the market for one is going to regret not getting one sooner IMO.

Hello Sanjay! Need more help. I got Aston Spirit mic. Yamaha hs5s. Krk 10s sub. Aston reflection filter. Silver cable for mic to interface. Im heavily leaning towards the apollo solo but concerned with workflow. Would you recommend I go with Apple (thunderbolt) or PC (usb) ?
Or would you think some other interface is better for my setup?
Also, im into Hip Hop so whats the best DAW to work with for recording and or producing in your opinion??
    Thanks Man

I love the Apollo interfaces. Love them! I think the best daws for hip hop are Ableton, FL studio, and Logic. In that order.

I have 3 inch mackie’s which loses a lot of sub frequencies. I am thinking if I need to upgrade to 5” studio monitors (mainly considering krk) or supplement my 3” monitors with woofers. Wat would u recommend?

    • @SanjayC
      @SanjayC  Před 3 lety +1

Honestly, you're probably better off doing both. The KRKs are an excellent choice. Even if you pair the KRKs with the cheaper Mackie sub, you'll be very happy.

A great set up is the ik iloud micro monitors or more costly but even better would be the ik iloud MTM monitors,,,, these two monitors are really great.... Add the Yamaha hs8 s ( the s is for sub ) not to be confused with the Yamaha hs8 studio monitor. Although I have this Yamaha monitor also, but I truly know that I like the ik iloud MTM monitors, especially because these are more easy to listen to, less fatiguing, because of the room size... In a larger room, the Yamaha monitors are great.

Seems like its a good idea to have a sub pac as well as a sub, if youre not going to use the sub pac with headphones.
Ive got the protable subpac i use for vr.
Its good good, makes it so much more immersive.
