      Designed to the Nines well when we purchased our home many moons ago 🤣😂 they had real wood cabinets but they were so boring with the flat panels etc. so I painted them black yes black 🤷‍♀️ back when the black was popular well since then we have sanded and added trim to make them look more like shaker style but my husband stained them a really dark reddish stain which I think I can fix🤞
      My real problem is with the waisted space... there are no corner cabinets they are all squared off if you know what I mean... so without replacing all the cabinets I’m not sure how to fix my problems... any suggestions? 🙏🏻😂🤣

      I feel you! I’ve worked around old the kitchens in the past… it sounds like you’re handy, so maybe it’s just building in some extra shelves here and there on the wall or on the ends of cabinets. Definitely when you’re short on space you have to think outside the box.💕

      @Alltheshiny.reneeowens Před 4 lety +2

      @@donnadoiron8884 ugh with the squared off corner spaces. so the corners are jsut these huge empty spaces that you cant even get to. both corners, top and bottom in our kitchen has that empty unreachable unused space! and we will have to completely change the layout of the kitchen to even put new cabinets in to use it.

    Hint. Always remove one of each handle type you are replacing and and bring it with you when you shop. If you are ordering online, measure distance on back between holes. I’ve made the same mistake you did the first time, but only because I guessed. NEVER guess. My cabinets are painted, but because I am repainting them, this will work. I know some of the paint will come off, but it doesn’t matter in this instance. Thank you so much for this tutorial. You’re a hoot. By the way, your cabinets look great and the new hardware adds a great touch. I have white cabinets with white hardware. It’s fine, but I’m switching out to black hardware. Cabinets are quite old, but I’m leaving them because I plan to move. They have the exterior hinges. I, therefore, needed to buy handles, knobs and hinges in black. I buy myself a birthday gift and for three birthdays in a row, I bought handles one year, knobs the second and hinges lastly. The hinges were the least expensive. It cost a lot because I have 27 or 29 doors in my kitchen and 15 drawers. I was also on a very tight budget. Now I have to get the paint. I’m doing the same color, decorator white. I like my house, but not the neighborhood. Hence, the move. Plus I want a smaller house with everything on the main floor, no upstairs.

    • @designedtothenines
      @designedtothenines  Před 4 lety

      I think that it would work well for painted cabinets and just knowing that you’re going to have to go in and touch up paint a little bit. Might actually be good to kind of knock off some of the loose ones that would not stick anyways. Yeah… As far as the hardware I should’ve known better... it’s so silly that that happened. I’ve been dying for a long time and that was an amateur mistake. I think black hardware will look really awesome with white cabinets. Good luck with your project!💕

    Our current pine kitchen cabinets have been in place in our old 1927 farmhouse since the early 1950's. I'm sure they were varnished at one time, but by the time we moved in recently, they were wearing more layers of fried food grease than anything else. It was disgusting!
    Scrubbing the cabinets with Muphy's oil soap, rinsing with a vinegar/water solution, and finally rinsing with plain water got them cleaned up, and even helped removed gummy dissolved varnish. As a temporary finish,, I oiled them with jojoba and lemon oil with rosemary and tea tree, because ... . Before painting. I'll rewash them with oil soap and rinse again.. It is worth the effort to prepare a surface before refinishing!!!

    Love the brass!! I think the counter tops are a little dark with your new backsplash, but it's still beautiful..do you have any suggestions for oak cabinets if the stain comes off?? I'm not sure a sharpie would work for that color..lol! Thanks so much! Love it!

    • @designedtothenines
      @designedtothenines  Před 4 lety

      So unfortunately I did not pick out the counters and I was working with those to begin with. I didn’t want to replace them since they are new and in good condition. I actually went with the lighter backsplash because I thought it would brighten up that already dark kitchen which it did.😃 I Think if your kitchen are just the natural oak color you won’t need to worry so much about a stain pen because they should be the natural wood color, having said that you could try the blend and feel by Minwax which is kind of like a waxy crayon type thing and I think that could work. My mom did light colored maple cabinets that did not have a stain on them and she did not need to do that step once she cleaned and put the cabinet cream on.😃

    Good tips,but would be helpful if you first item the products one would need and where to source them. For e.g would like to get those brushes that attach to the drill.

    Wondering if the stain stick would have worked if you did it before you polished.... Nice cabinets.

    what kind of hinges did you place for the drawers you unscrewed with the little white plastic pieces. I have drawers fronts/face that are just stick on there with double sided tape but I am worried it could fall out and hurt my kids or pets.

    I just found this video today 7/7/21. A whole 9 months later. Anyway, my kitchen cabinets I do believe are builder grade. My house was built in 78 and we bought the house a few years ago and my kids have since ripped pots and pan doors off, silverware drawer off and the cabinets are just disgusting. They have been painted so many times the they don’t even close well. I am not sure if I can take the rest of the drawers and doors off and strip all the paint and fix the ones broken and put in new hardware or should I just replace? I have an extremely small kitchen which is half galley. Only cabinets tip and bottom on either side. Not room for more then 2 people inside at a time.

    I’ve ordered the scrubbies and I am not a deep cleaner but that seems manageable. Did you rinse the Murphy’s off with water? Also my cabinets do not have handles any suggestions on how to pick ones for it.

    • @designedtothenines
      @designedtothenines  Před 4 lety

      You do not need to wash it off with water. Just wipe it down with the microfiber cloth. It is a very manageable project. As far as selecting hardware. It kind of depends on the color of your cabinet and the look you’re going for. I would go to Pinterest and look at kitchens that you like and see if there’s a common repeating theme of hardware. Hope that helps!😃

    I bought a home because I really liked the mahogany cabinets! Only to find out after closing that the owners half-asses painted them white. Not using the same shade nor type, water vs oil based paint. I hate the house I moved into four months ago!

    Hey Natalee, they look great! Was the cabinet polish an oily consistency? I’m thinking that could’ve caused the stain pen to not work.

    • @designedtothenines
      @designedtothenines  Před 4 lety +1

      It's cabinet cream... like lotion. It actually worked when I tested it, on lighter cabinets this won't be as critical. I think I would probably try the waxy crayon next time, but honestly for my color cabinets, the sharpie worked like an absolute charm!

    • @OrganizeCreateDecorate
      @OrganizeCreateDecorate Před 4 lety

      @@designedtothenines I'm with Braden, it could have been the polish. Murphy's Oil Soap could have been a factor too. Had you waited a few days for the product to soak in better, the stain marker should have worked better.
      Beautiful transformation though! The crayons are for filling scratches or marks left when nailing pieces of stained wood as a quick filler.
