    I’ll NEVER understand why someone would buy a house in a HOA plan. Why do you want strangers telling you how often to cut grass, what can be parked in your driveway, who is allowed to live in your house, etc? It’s like being a teenager in your mom and dad’s house all over again

      My HOA has so far been the exception: much less expensive than other HOAs in my area, they pay for garbage service and lawn care, and while they are pretty strict about decor (my brother tried to hang a bird feeder and we got read the riot act), they don't do theses kinds of things to us, and they do take responsibility for outdoor repairs.

      Some private subdivisions have private roads and infrastructure (such as access gates) that require constant maintenance. It makes sense that a HOA might be needed to do this, so I can see where they were started. They also can be a real pain at times, which I have found out the hard way.

      They really won't. Many of these properties should have never been built in the first place. The pace of climate change is only accelerating. Storms and heat are getting more and more extreme every year. The seas are rising inexorably. Florida real estate simply isn't a good long-term investment. The cost to keep a property standing in Florida will grow year after year. And properties that are very expensive to maintain will see their property values plummet. Florida real estate is not a good long-term investment. There's millions of housing units there that honestly never should have been built.

      Money for nothing, it's a grand life. In most situations you are 'forced' to get insurance. Here in Australia, you have to have insurance to get your car registration for the year. On top of that they (unknown people, probably with super-yachts and taking extended vacations on tropical beaches) came up with a 'ctcp' scheme, whereby every vehicle owner has to pay around $600 per year (I had to anyway for the single vehicle I owned) supposedly for a fast track 'automatic' payout scheme for people who get injured in car accidents. I have been reading stories about people fighting for years to get a claim from this scheme.
      Billions of peoples dollars every year, just disappear into a black hole somewhere ... (or various billionaires pockets).

      @TanyaLairdCivil Před měsícem +4

      Towns tend to require them for new subdivisions. They do this because people aren't willing to actually pay the taxes necessary for the very expensive services low-density suburbia requires. HOAs serve as a stopgap, a way to offload a lot of municipal services onto home owners in a backdoor manner. People don't want to pay the taxes necessary to maintain all their streets, sewer lines, etc., plus provide fire and police services. Low density suburbs are just a very expensive way to build. At the taxes people are willing to pay, they're a net drain on city finances. Thus cities require HOAs, and people accept that. They view HOA fees as something fundamentally different than taxes, though there's few services HOAs provide that cities can't provide as well.

    Do NOT blame the insurance companies or banks. I was in the insurance business for 43 years. When Andrew hit Florida there was a wake-up call to insurance companies that Florida had the potential to bankrupt them. The company I worked for severely cut back on the property business we wrote in Florida. We tried to tell the politicians that they should adopt a plan similar to that in Hawaii where they set up a state-run hurricane plan. The policyholder would pay into this fund at each renewal until it reached a set cap. The insurance companies would continue to write homeowners policies, just excluding the wind peril. When a hurricane hit, the insurance companies would handle the claims, but be reimbursed by the hurricane fund. We would have continued to write the regular homeowners policy just excluding the wind exposure. The politicians didn't want this because they wanted to blame the big, bad insurance companies. Insurance companies are in business to make a profit, just like every other business. If you want your insurance premiums to continue to be $5,000 or more with a high franchise or percentage wind deductible, do nothing. If you want it to be more reasonable and get companies back in Florida competing for your business, tell your state representatives to work with companies to come up with a plan beneficial to all.

      DeSantis isn't perfect but he's not Newsome from California, Hochul from NY, Whitmer from Michigan or Walz from Minnesota who let a bunch of criminals loot and burn over 1700 businesses and a police precinct for 3 days before he lifted a finger to do anything.

      Yea, I'm in Orlando and was paying Farmer's $2000 a year. They were going to raise it to $2500 last year, but I ( like many of my neighbors ) put on a new roof even though the house was only 13 years old, so they kept it at $2000. Now they are pulling out and the quotes I've been getting from other insurers have been $5k to $12k. I hope you don't have Citizen's Insurance. They took up a TON of policies over the last two years because they were not updating their prices. Now they are insolvent and are trying to kick as many people off as they can. They are also an incompetent lot. I had them once about 8 years ago, and I went to my agent to ask why I had not seen any renewal notice from them. It turned out they couldn't be bothered to send me a renewal notice, cancellation notice, or anything, but had cancelled my policy nearly 3 months earlier. I asked the agent what I had to do to get this fixed TODAY. They spent some time on the phone and told me to write a check for 6 months of insurance, and they would back date it to when it should have renewed. Two weeks later, I got a notice of cancellation because they hadn't told me there was a $2 up charge for only paying half the year, so they took half the money for the 3 months of insurance that I did not have, then said I was $2 short for the next 3 months and that's why I was canceled after only having insurance again for 2 weeks. NEVER do business with Citizens.
