    I think there's an argument for a partial return of some meaningful objects, which I think should be discussed in a case-by-case scenario. I don't think it's reasonable for institutions that simply are older and were/are supported by imperial states to say they have the right to hold most of the important pieces of the "shared human history" let alone those pieces that are specially relevant for a people and/or state.

    • @ReunionMana
      @ReunionMana Před 2 lety +1

      Absolutely agree, it is a shoddy, perhaps unintentional defense of imperialist actions in past centuries to simply decide that “well none of what happened before matters, what really matter is the now” because we all know good and goddamn well it is easy as fuck for an old white dude to just decide that, and if anyone thinks for a moment that the opinions of these men are not colored by their literal jobs and educations being in museum keeping, then they are seriously on another planet logic-wise. Of course the men in charge of the british museum want to keep it how it is now-god forbid someone who actually belongs to a culture that the british empire tried desperately to stamp out and stole everything from demands that their heritage which was unjustly taken be returned in the name of fairness and justice AS THE UK AND EVERY OTHER DECENT COUNTRY DECLARES ITS OWN CITIZENS DESERVE.

    Document everything in every museum and private collection via HD 3D recordings at the highest resolution possible. Make as many copies as you want. Devalue everything so as to protect from theft or mutilation by hiding the originals by non disclosure of which is the original. The statue of David or ancient text mean more than the art it's self.

    There are still parts of the world where there are ancient artifacts that are targets of religious zealots, and ancient sites with objects inadequately protected from tourists. So, the first concern is the preservation of ancients things, we should identify those things that are at risk and protect them, if possible. Not always possible due to war and poor regional politics.

    Pomposity and egos have a lot to do this , Irving is being himself erudite and funny, but the other two are using their vocabularies trying to sound intellectual but is not coming across. Palmyra was a disgrace and a useless act The instigators are actually destroying their own heritage ,so they are poorer for it. Professor fiinkel is being very patient and showing himself to be more honest than quedtiner and the other guest.

    Why did the states allow foreign scholars to excavate in their countries in the first place? Once the hard work is done the state wants the rewards of the toil. Why didn't they employ their own scholars to excavate?

    • @safebans1369
      @safebans1369 Před 5 lety

      One answer would be greater resources of the foreign scholars due to greater resources of the countries, economies and instututions to which they belong compared to the countries from which certain objects are taken.

    Conservation, loss of knowledge and context etc. are all good arguments, but references to "this was lawful in the past" ring hollow to me. Colonialism was lawful by the law of colonial states and genocide was lawful by the laws of Nazi Germany. Legal positivism isn't a good position to find yourself defending.

    Objects are only objects, and history is only history, and culture is only culture. It is the One Eternal Truth which is worth guarding and preserving. I like things and people and culture myself, but we must keep our minds right and priorities straight; we do not want to worship humanity.

    Although I’m a huge fan of dr. Finkel, the other two speakers certainly have their merits. Probably a bit more difficult to follow, they give a broader insight in the several aspects of retuning old stuff to the country of origin. It’s not a black or white thing, that became obvious for me. But Paris should give the Mosa-saurus back they stole from Maastricht. And the U.K. must give back the Elgar marbles.

    Soi Boi was so wrong about Trump - he had/has most of the nation but had little control over the state, which has given itself the power to continue to persecute him even though he's out of office.
