India Will Never Be Like China - Here's Why

  • If India's manufacturing sector grew at 8% compounded for the next 30 years and China's stayed the same, India's still would not be as big. That alone reflects the scale of the challenge India faces.
India's economic rise leads to honest questions about how it fell behind China in the first place. It's strange relationship with the Soviet Union, colonial legacy, manufacturing challenges and past policies have all played a role.
India's demographic dividend is more time sensitive than most people think. Yes, it has advantages but the window and manner to capitalise upon them is
    not permanent or straight forward.

We're used to thinking of economics as if it's a technical subject like electrical engineering or physics. It's not. The economy is what emerges from society. So, how society organises itself and its values, etc are what determine the economics. India will be the next India.

Indians had no idea that China's civil war and resistance against Japanese aggression had lasted for 30 years around 1940. At that time, China's long-term chaos severely damaged China's economy. Around 1940, there was no major war in India at all. India was in a period of peace, and in 1840, China's GDP accounted for over 40% of the world's GDP. Indians always enjoyed comparing the GDP of the two countries in 1940, but in fact, there was no comparability. In 1949, the Chinese Nationalist Party and the Communist Party invested more than 14 million troops in the civil war, which swept across China from north to south. In the end, the Communist Party won the victory and drove the Nationalist Party to Taiwan. China's independence was achieved through large-scale wars and countless small-scale wars, while India's independence was achieved through sit ins. The implementation is completely incomparable, Although India illegally invaded China's Tibet/Xizang and occupied a large part of China's territory, including Kashmir, Ladakh, and southern Tibet, since 1903, China has always been very restrained. In the 1962 invasion and counterattack against India, China only sent a small number of troops. If there was a large-scale land war, all Indian troops would have no hope of victory. In the history of the world, large-scale wars involving more than 1 million people basically took place in China. Most Indian people have not realized China's friendliness to India until now. If China were replaced by Russia, India would have been destroyed long ago

In 1962, it was a Chinese invasion of India, ask anyone not brain washed by propaganda unlike you and they'll say China were the agressors. I agree India stood no chance but get the facts right.
Most Indians know China isn't friendly, you play China on as if it's some great power which can destroy the west in a year yet your to scared to invade Taiwan, if China were to be replaced by Russia, south Asia would be a lot more amicable.

These Indians play for other countries and will not come back to India. It can be seen from here that the Indian elite is proud of integrating into Western countries and is proud of being fluent in English. The Chinese elite has completely different thinking. EVs where the wages is about 3X of India. But BYD decided to open the factories in Thailand, Brazil and Hungary but not India. The Indian government has this extremely short sighted mentality policies that make foreign companies stay away. Those who have entered India in the past such as Ford, GM, Harley Davidson, Nissan, Xiaomi etc. have either left or is thinking of leaving. You are not updated with the latest news on Apple. Apple just signed up with its latest business partner not with India but the auto maker in China BYD. Also it is important to know what is China doing right now and compare to what is India doing right now because the global industrial and business environment is different now to when China rose to the top as a manufacturing nation. For a nation like India being the service centre and without the manufacturing pillar is not ideal to increase its industrialization in a country like India, India has a large untrained youth employment population and this group needs to start off with industry that is labor intensive industries that are making their way away from China but into countries like Vietnam and India's neighbor Bangladesh. If we look at population dividend of these two nations then we see why China is so much ahead of India, with almost comparable population China has 40% more people in its work force than India, in term of skilled and trained workers China has 192 million compare to 27 million in India. The other reason is how these two countries invest in education and science and technological research. China invest 3.3% of its GDP in education and while India invest 2.9% of its GDP in education, considering China has an economy that is almost 5 times of India so China actually spend almost 5 times what China spent on educating its youth. In term of science and technological R@D China invests more than 9 times that of India, this is why you are seeing China has a growing tech sector that is able to lift the country into higher value added industries like EVs, with forward thinking China is also a major player in getting the critical resources around the world. China has factoring the needs of infrastructures decades before India with it it is ready to grow for decades. Compare to China India is also rather poor in natural resources, China is widely considered as resource rich nation while it does not have all the natural resources but globally it is considered the 6th resource rich nation behind the likes of Russia, US, Saudi, Canada and Iran.

For 2022, three years after all the Covid-19 disruptions, the US GDP has grown to $25.46 trillion, China’s GDP to $18.1 trillion, and India’s GDP to $3.39 trillion.
The US and China have added GDP of $4.08 trillion and $3.76 trillion respectively in these three years. At the same time, India could add only $0.55 trillion. Both the US and China have added more than India’s 2022-23 GDP ($3.39 trillion) during this period.
Given this, are we ratcheting up our GDP growth to catch up with the US and China, or is India’s GDP gap with the US and China widening uncomfortably.

Why does India like to compare with China, but China doesn't care about India? China doesn't see India as a threat or something to aspire for, then the reason is simple. Talk to any one. For a vast majority of them, India is a low income country, with poverty and misery everywhere. Watching india's street children is heart breaking. That's literally how the ordinary people views India. Business people that travel to India but never eat outside the hotel or only do selectively because they feel it is too ‘unclean’. Just take an aerial view of Shanghai and compare it to Bombay and it doesn't take a genius to figure out why that is. I challenge anyone to name a country that has the following characteristics:
      1. Backward socio cultural attributes
      2. Failed democracy
      3. A population more than what the country's resource base can handle
      4. Poor work ethic
      5. Crappy bureaucracy
      6. Increasing brain drain
      7. Increasing communal disharmony
      8. Lack of unity
      9. Rapid environmental degradation
      10. Poor law and order
      11. Lack of any major economic, political and social reforms
      12. Slave mentality
      13. Hero worshipping
      14. Lack of any unique economic edge
      15. Unfair labour laws
      16. Lack of efficiency in anything
pakistan & most islamic countries have all these characteristics, yet fanatics love to belive that they will become a developed country. What else do you call this other than madness?

The only question that I have is, why would India even try to be China? It can well be its own thing and chart out its own unique path of economic growth. Later on, other countries might be compared to India in that regard.
