      Good point. What engine and trans does your truck use? I guess the only benefit to a diesel pickup is being able to park in parking lots(duallys are tougher), hauling smaller loads, the crew cab, traveling unloaded, and the 4x4. Crew cab and 4x4 is possible but a big expensive deal on a medium size freightliner or international..... and a medium truck gets worse mpg than a diesel pickup when driving around unloaded. I think these guys who hotshot heavy loads most of the time may be better off with a medium truck lol

      Really, it's not like it's important for you to know. If you don't complete a regen, it'll just start up again the next you drive it. What's important is just making sure you drive it long enough every now and then to complete a regen.

      @AkioWasRight Před 5 lety +1

      @@BGCE69 That's because a DPF doesn't always require a full regen or even the completion of a partial regen, but let me go into some detail and clear some things up. Please keep in mind that this is how things work in general, but not all diesels work the same way.
      So, when it comes to Rams, you actually do have a system that tells you when your system is "full" or when you "need" to complete a regen. To better understand, just think of the DPF as like any other type of reusable filter. When the filter is full or clogged up, it needs to be cleaned out. If it's only half full, you can still keep going without clearing it. That's just like your DPF, and regen is just the clearing process of the DPF.
      All regen is inevitable because, like all reusable filters, a DPF congests.
      Now, it should be known that there are difference types of regen. You have forced regen, which is a service a technician will do for these trucks in cases of severe buildup, a passive regen, which just happens when you're driving normally, and then there are two different types of active regen. A full regen is one type which absolutely requires you to allow the process. "Full" regen is require when you DPF is supposedly "fully". You actually will get a warning telling you this. This is the only time you need to pay attention to when it needs regen. When you need a "full" regen, you'll either be required to drive it for an extended period of time to complete the regen or you will have to have the DPF serviced. For that and other reasons, we should avoid "full" regen with more passive regeneration or by allowing the other type of active regen.
      The other type of active regen is a partial regen. This is when your DPF isn't "full", but a regen is used to main a lower level of soot and avoid a "full" regen. This type of regen confuses people because they think they're supposed to do something for their truck. In fact, it doesn't require much. When a partial regen is activated, it gives out telltale signs, but no instrument messages go out because very little is required from the operator. While it's best to let a partial regen complete, it's not 100% necessary to complete it every time. In fact, a partial regen won't always start back up again, even if you didn't complete the process.
      That's because the filter systems on these Rams are activated by differential pressure sensors that reads for certain levels of back pressure in the exhaust system. The system is programmed to last a certain amount of time for partial regen, but that doesn't mean it has to last that that long for back pressure to drop below the programmed levels and for the system to be satisfied. You could be in regen for 1/2 the programmed time and not need a partial regen for another couple hundred miles or more. If it didn't regen long enough to meet the set back pressure, the regen will start back up again without indication.
      Again, the important thing is to just make sure you drive the thing and be sure to allow a complete active regeneration when it requires it. That's as simple as just driving for at least the programmed amount of time. It's always preferred you drive longer harder to allow more passive regen. If not, just allow partial regen every now and then to avoid filing up the particulate filter and triggering the "full" regen. Partial regen isn't as unavoidable and should actually be expected under most conditions. In most cases, partial regen lasts about 20 minutes at operating temperatures for every cycle. For most of us, that's part of a normal drive. If you complete a partial regen in one drive cycle, that's actually enough to satisfy the system and avoid "full" regen. Even if you miss a complete partial regen, it's not a big deal as long you don't keep doing that repeatedly.

    • @chokekoo983
      @chokekoo983 Před 5 lety

      @@BGCE69 Like the other guy said, there isn't really much you need to monitor or do for the truck. If you think you're interrupting a regenerating, it's nothing to worry about unless you receive a warning. There are different levels of active fuel assisted regeneration. Full is the only time you need to take action, but partial regeneration isn't supposed to bother you at all. You shouldn't even know it's happening. The only rule people should follow is drive least 20 or 30 minutes continuously to allow for the complete regeneration cycle and avoid completely filling the particulate filter. You don't even have to drive it hard like some people say, though that as beneficial. As long you aren't just driving cold all the time by start it up shutting off because all you do is go to the grocery store down the street, you shouldn't have a problem.

    Though a Chevy fan (currently a 2014 Impala bought new at Johnson's have no need for a truck at this time) but when it comes to pickups it is RAM (have had two of them over the years) all the way.
    Love your reviews! Fell in love with the Jeep Gladiator! Have had 2 JKUs and planning on one as my next vehicle.

    Why not top off before getting on the scale? How much weight was actually on the hitch???
    BTW, Kent drove a Cummins for nearly 100 miles without saying, "it sounds like a Peterbilt". Are you feeling OK, buddy???

      @TFLtruck  Před 5 lety +3

      We had nearly 4,900 lbs on the hitch.

      @@TFLtruck Perfect, that's right where my toyhauler is, so what was your drive axle weight on the scale, then?

    3:20 Why not include regen? I understand it requires longer tests, but that's the reality of life for diesel these days.

      Shouldn't be regening until roughly 40,000 miles!

      phuc ewe unless you do a lot of towing/city driving, you shouldn't be regening until roughly 40,000 miles. I owned a 2016 ram 2500 mega cab limited Cummins and not once did I regen, considering I did most my driving on the freeway.

    Your breakaway cable is not attached properly. It needs to be connected to the truck. You can run it through the safety chain fitting and be legal. Also what rear end ratio did you have? 4.11? If you slowed down to 62-65 you might get 10 mpg.

    How reliable are these new Diesel engines? Ford. Vs dodge. I need too get A cab and chassis and my truck currently weights about 16000 lbs. it’s a bucket truck. Not sure if I should go with a new 7.3 gas or the Cummins or the new 6.7?

    Why would you not include regen? You can't just ignore it, it's bound to happen some time.

    Just upgrade your tank size. They have then out there or you can instal an axillary tank on a switch but that's still not bad mpg for the weight being towed
