I was addicted to RD in the late 60's and early 70's. I saw a handful of NY Chiefs games in Syracuse and Utica. I subscribes to a DR newspaper. As soon as the publication started including Roller Games and interleague games started on TV, I knew RD was doomed. I love these full half game shows. Thank you for posting them.

Roller Derby Illustrated becoming Roller Sports Illustrated in September of 1973. I knew we were doomed.

I really miss these days with dad, grandma, step mom, sister and little brother. We were her on the bottom floor on the right side always. Kezar Stadium, San Francisco Cow Palace, Oakland Auditorium was packed with fans and the excitement seeing Carol Peanut Myers, Joanie Weston, Delores Tucker, Charlie O'Connell, Tony Roman, Cliff Butler.... the 🔥 fire was L.I.T!!!

Yup my family use to go on Sundays to Kezar pavilion to watch roller derby. We'd also sit right behind the announcers table. My mother use to have Cliff Butler and Taft Waters and Delores Tucker over to our house in the Sunset district for poker card games. I also loved when the roller derby was down in San Jose at the old San Jose civic auditorium, because we'd always have a nice dinner at San Jose Joe's then walk across the street to the game. We also went to the Oakland coliseum arena and the Cow Palace to watch the roller derby. When I was a teenager my brother and me use to go over to Alameda to Buddy Atkinson Sr roller derby training center off Webster street.

I've lived in San Francisco forever but never had actually been inside the KP, I'm a taxi driver, I've been everywhere but Kezar, ohhhhh you could feel the history bud! It was about a month ago, hallowed ground, I expected a pigtailed brunette to elbow me on my way in!

@@freddymarcel-marcum6831 Yes it does. I've often considered it the "Wrigley Field" of a venue to watch Roller Derby. Rustic & nothing fancy about the place. Some even the Skaters might considered the old aging facility a dive. Even when a facelift is given often then not only a repair of windows or coat of paint. Still the place has character & any spot minus perhaps behind a pillar is or was now a good seat in the house! I used to sit directly behind the PA Announcer to hear him better. Then again still majority of the seats were great IMO. Oh the only other time maybe when sitting on the end with the lobby & entrance/exit behind you was during a game which was broadcasted on television. Blinding lights if you will!

I can watch this game over and over again. Great skating by all and my favorite jammers, Judi McGuire and Carol Meyers and of course Mike Gammon and Tony Roman… the last two are jamming In Heaven now

Notice the Red Devils wore the altered original IRDL Southern Eagles uniforms with numbers in the 20's range, which some fans remember was also used by the Detroit Devils of the rival Roller Games promotion, although the Red Devils & NY Chiefs did flip flop numerical ranges around '55 and again around '61 for a few seconds.....

Not much consideration in the choice of uniforms for those of us watching on a B&W TV when I was a kid. Of course Joan always stood out. That was back in 1965.

77 and 78 was the end of the glory days. 79 to 86(?) was weak but ok. Bill Groll and Larry Lewis were Titans those seasons. Bill Hill and Shawn Atkinson not so much. And RollerJam a joke. How bout a ultimate Blu-ray of the best 10 games from 73,77-78 and 79-86!.. Cool!!!💗💗💗

Very true. As for Sean Atkinson though actually I was very impressed by him honest. Made his Father & Grandfather proud. Only issue I had with Sean with his waste of energy if you will. Always appear to go way too over the top when he didn't have to. One of the best young upcoming Skaters next to Jimmy Smith @ the time.

@@donniehagy5125 I believe he has a Bachelor's in Debate or Communications so no surprise there. Then too regardless when the IRSL started going into the Games stuff I started to lose interest. Of all people David Lipschultz wanted his Skaters to inject more of their personalities if you will into the game's presentation though keep the game traditional. Honest I never really felt that was as needed as simply getting more fresh blood or younger Skaters interested to replace the veterans. Lipschultz also lost his television contracts which didn't help him continuing,. Be it Hill's Hideaway or what was it...Paul's Penalty Box...not needed. Sad too many Promoters of the banked track sport feel it still needs to be "Worked" to be entertaining & like you mentioned before, I'm under the same feeling that it's not needed period!
