    what brand of bag is holding your food? It almost looked like it was vacuum sealed. I use a different brand of UL sack, but am curious because yours looks more efficient.

    Wow, that's a big pack. I haven't seen or carried a pack that big since the Army days and parachuting. The only issue I have with civilian packs is the lack of a separate sleeping bag compartment and pouches outside so you don't have to always go into your pack. You should be able to live on the outside of your pack and only rarely for resup go into the main compartment. The front opening I suppose solves this. I know this is a hunting pack but this design in military packs shits me.

      “Separate” means extra material, which means extra weight.
      Their beaver pocket enables you to access the inside/bottom of the pack. No need for excessive outside pockets.

    Great video! I’m a backpacker who is getting into backpack hunting, and I noticed a couple things I’d do differently, for what it’s worth:
    3:38 interested in the rationale for 4-5 pairs of socks. I see an opportunity for weight savings there. One pair to hike in, one pair to sleep in, and even with a third as a backup, you’d be more than covered for 10 days.
    Have you considered smart water bottles instead of Nalgene? Nalgenes have disappeared from the backpacking world because of their weight.
    The first aid pouch looks large. What’s in it? I carry medication in small ziplocks made for pills, a CAT tourniquet, duct tape and Leuko tape wrapped around cardboard, bandaids in various sizes, steri strips. My kit looks to be about half the size in terms of volume.
    I ordered a 5900 and can’t wait to get it out in the trail.

      Awesome to hear! I think you'll really love it especially if you enjoy tradition backpacking.
      All good points. Some of the items you listed are personal preference and you could do as you said and cut some weight out.

      @@NoBody-pw3kf - 1) socks do in fact take up weight, there is no magical sock that weighs 0 grams. Down booties have a far better warm to weight ratio, if you want to bring something for your feet on super cold trips.
      2) I haven't seen an experienced backpacker with a Nalgene in probably 10 years. Nalgenes are popular in the survival community, and predominately in circles of people who don't actually backpack. The wide mouth of a Nalgene serves no purpose on the trail unless you plan to sterilize using a steripen.
      3) As far as bandaids, I rarely see a backpacker gear video with a med kit breakdown that doesn't include bandaids. It is by far the most likely piece of medical kit you're going to need on a backpacking trip (other than something like advil, of course).

      @@BacktotheOutdoorsI mean I wouldn't call myself an expert backpacker but I've been backpacking since I was in grade school on trips anywhere from 3 days to 20 days and I almost exclusively use nalgenes. On long trips I'll take 4 of them. My water purifier screws right into the wide mouth so it works perfect

      @@markalsobrooks5934 - you take four Nalgene bottles on long trips? For what purpose?

      @@BacktotheOutdoors Sometimes I'm in a very dry environment where I might not encounter a water source more then once in a 24 hour period, while also consuming around 3L of water in a day. My pack nicely fits 2 nalgenes on each side so I come replace 2 of them with a bladder of some kind internally. I prefer to keep all my water external where it's more accessible and less likely to get items in my bag wet if there was a leak

    Could you expand more on how you care for the meat once you kill something? I'm getting into hunting on the east coast of Canada and I am looking to do multiple days in the wood trips with a tent like you but most people here build hunting camps which look more like cottages and uses their atv to carry their kills back to their camp so it's hard to find information about that

    • @stoneglacier9636
      @stoneglacier9636  Před 3 lety +2

      Pretty tough to cover in the comments section of CZcams but as long as you keep the meat cool and clean it should be ok for multiple days.

      Depending on how far north you could dig a hole deep enough into the ground where it’s frozen and put the meat under ground of course in a game bag and the hole lined with stuff

    Save almost a lb switching the Nalgene bottles for smart water bottles. Ultralight backpacking combined with hunting is basically sheep and goat hunting. Lighter is faster.

      @@MatanuskaHIGH im pretty sure smart water bottles are the new trendy shit. I am quite positive nalgene has been around decades and decades longer than smart water, and not a chance a smart water bottle lasts as long as a nalgene. I think theres a reason theyve been the benchmark forever.

    • @stoneglacier9636
      @stoneglacier9636  Před rokem

      4-10 miles would be reasonable. Typically you'd drop camp and leave some gear during the day but if you were just hunting with camp on your back it is totally doable to cover ground still.
