    Brutal Review
    AJJAMStudios
    At first we put the Arrma warranty in this video as a gag to see who was paying attention, if anybody. Now it is more of a pain. We put the Arrma warranty in internally.
    In this video we are going to review the Traxxas UDR, or Unlimited Desert Racer. We are going to run it and bash it to see if it holds up to the hype. First we will look at the car and see what makes it tick, and then we let it all hang out and take you along for the ride. Then, after our testing is complete, I will give you my assessment of the car as I see it. I’m honest and tough, but I do my best to keep things fair; even though fair is a relative term. I know the class this car is designed for and thus, will treat it so. But, just to let you know, I hold nothing back. If the car performs well, you see it and I tell you what I think of it. But if it fails, and I can tell when something is caused by driver error, which happens, I “show and tell” that too. I’m not sponsored by any brands or companies, not at this point, so I am unbiased in my opinions and always will be, because I love many brands. The way I see it, your best car is the one that puts the biggest smile on your face; it’s just that simple. I have older cars I used to race, and I love them, but technology has come so far that they seem frail by comparison to the new ones. And I suppose they are. But I still smile when I drive them. New, old, it makes no difference. If you love speed, there’s a niche for that. If you love slow, that is awesome too. None of it matters. I try to never compare myself to others, because that is not important to me. I make myself happy, and that’s that. And, not to sound preachy, but neither should you. Don’t let others tell you what you have to do to make your cars cool; that’s your decision. Do what makes you happy, and let others do the same. Life is too short to spread negativity. So, try and keep that in mind when commenting, because negativity will be deleted, and continuing with negative posting will only serve to get you blocked; and once blocked it is for life. I hope I never have to do that on my channel. Live, wrench, bash. AJ

    If you permanently cover the wheels vent holes prior to the udr's first run, then there is no need to vent the tyres because no dirt is getting in there anyway. I never vent the rubber tyres on any rc, a hole gives a starting point for rips especially when they balloon and stretch. I love my udr, enjoy working on it. Everyone complains about removing 12 screws to get the shell off, but it's hardly hard work is it... Nice vid though, keep up the good work buddy!

    The udr is truly a scale drivers truck. Traction conditions and speed are crucial. It’s no fault of the truck when it rolls or flips because driver input exceeds conditions on the ground. It’s certainly not a Mojave whose physical layout allows it to out handle the udr. The udr, by design, will require more skill to operate than most r/c trucks. Folks need to know this before purchase to avoid any degree of disappointment. Despite the more fragile nature of it’s design it sure stood up to some considerable abuse in this video.

    Another great video review A. J.! I really like how scale the truck is, especially the suspension and how smooth the suspension works. I scale detailed up the UDR, so I'm a little more careful running it than my other models, and haven't broken anything, only rolled it a few times.
    I'm done with all my mods: I have aluminum disc brake outer hubs, upper & lower control arms are aluminum, the rear lower links are aluminum, sealed the wheels and vented the tires (I do this on all my models as I run them all year, so, they see lots of icy, snowy and wet conditions). I also filled the rear axle tube with Amsoil racing grease, and the transmission. I have stainless-steel skid plates too as I like to jump often, scale though, so not high but the skid plates protect the chassis from wearing down on some of the harder landings. I have a Hot Racing motor heatsink:bearing end cap with blower:fan, had to change the wiring a little as I use IC3 & IC5 connectors. I use 222 low strength Locktight on all metal to metal threads, not just as a little extra locking, but it really helps prevent corrosion of the threads as it can't oxidize if the threads are sealled. (Don't use into nylon locknuts or plastic) . I also fiberglass drywall taped / Shoe Goo'd the inside of the Lexan body when new. This is an awesome fun truck to drive and looks so cool. I run it without the body a lot (probably more than with it lol, which is probably another reason I drive it more carefully), as it looks so good without it and to be able to see more clearly the suspension working.

    I have a special relationship with my UDR and LMT King Sling. I love them both but rarely drive either because they're horrible, fragile RC cars. The LMT is good at absolutely nothing and the UDR is great at powerslides and donuts. Only so many donuts before they're less fun. It's almost too realistic, crash damage and all. It does great at low small jumps but air control is near non existent and stuff breaks, a lot. Then there's the traction rolls. If you can afford a $800 truck that you'll barely drive it's great. I love mine but i don't recommend it to anyone who doesn't have a race track near by.

    Excellent video! I love your honest and thorough breakdown. I really do love my UDR..it doesn’t handle like my 1/8 truggy or buggy, but it’s about as scale as high speed RC trophy trucks get.

      The ultimate question. Udr or the Mohave!
      Mohave looks plasticity more than necessary and its suspension is more of a toy compared to the udr.
      The best way to enjoy the udr is to keep its speed limit to 50%. It will handle realistic. Any suggestions folks.

    Outstanding video. Just bought this same setup after being out of the RC world for the better part of 20yrs ☺. Your video helped a lot to understand the truck and how it rides.... still can't figure out how to get the body passed the dang lights up front though... ☺

    • @AJJAMStudios
      @AJJAMStudios  Před 2 lety +1

      Getting the body past the lights, especially the bar light in the grille, can be kind of trixie. Once you get the screws out of the body you need to slide one side of the body behind the light in the grill. It's a tight fit, but it does go. Pull the other side out and slip it past the lights, releasing the opposite side from behind the light bar. Now the body should be loose. Let me know if this helps. AJ

    • @AJJAMStudios
      @AJJAMStudios  Před 3 lety +15

      The choice has to be yours, but keep in mind the UDR is built for dirt and rugged ripping. The maxx however is more of a monster truck and thus able to handle more primitive environments. They are both fast. They are both fun. I love the way the UDR looks when it corners but it is not really built to handle big jumps or pavement. It tips easily in the corners on good traction. I do not presently own a maxx but it is a small version of the Xmaxx, which I do own. I also love that beast. So, I would advise you this way: look them both over “in person” and see which one speaks to you. Consider where you plan to run it, then make your choice. If the car you pick makes you smile and feel excited - you picked the right one. There is no wrong or right about it. Good hunting. AJ 😎👍

    I do like the UDR a lot and is definitely not for a beginner even on 50%. Lol. I haven't broke many parts on mine over the few years I've owned mine. I got mine in the mail Nov 17th of 2018. I already had the front driveshaft and upper rear 4 link arms and aluminum trailing arms on order when I ordered the UDR. The parts came the day after my first run. Very shortly after I ordered aluminum fake rotors and calipers, then came the a-arms, and sway bars, and this, and that. So needless to say, very few broken stock parts. Actually, I'd have to research my receipts, but I don't think I've broken a stock part at all. Blah blah blah. Lol. I also have a Losi Super Baja Rey 1.0 as well as a Losi 5ive T. Both of which handle better, but still isn't a UDR. There is just something "magical" about driving a UDR that can't be compared to any other trophy or short course truck. I'm lucky enough to be able to say I've experienced enough to be able to say that. I've got many other RCs, but that's off topic. The UDR is definitely something that needs to be in any RC enthusiasts collection. Yes it rolls in stock form, yes it breaks in stock form, but with the right upgrades and driving skill, it is an alarmingly good RC.
    Now back to watching the video.

    Great video and review !!! Subbed !!! The UDR is my next purchase , I love SC trucks , already have the Senton 6s , Mojave and the new Losi SBR 2.0 , which you mentioned . I will say this , I wish I bought the UDR instead !!! The SBR 2.0 is great / fast but does not drive like what I'm seeing out of the UDR . It is very big and heavy , does not jump as well as the others ( hit or miss ) , flips easy . Don't get me wrong , it is one to own , but like you are saying , the UDR is very fun to drive !! Broke the front bumper and lower skid plate , and the skid plate ( which holds the lower hinge pins in !! ) is on backorder til May !!!
    Did I see it right , when you held up the truck , it looks like the rear stabilizer arms , one is bent ? Seen this to be common with the UDR . Looking forward to more UDR vids from you !!!

    What would be the problem with sealing the wheels and not venting at all? Of course atmospheric conditions may play with pressure a bit but may be best option? As far as drilling 3 holes through each tire, why 3? Wouldn’t one be enough. Less holes in tire the better. And just my 2¢ but I would never drill on a seam line. That gives you a greater potential for it to start splitting/tearing. This hols true for anything. Never bore on a seam line. Drill a hole in the seam line of a gas can and then seal it up and put it in the sun… it will split the can apart where you drilled the hole! Again, nice vid!

    Once you've sealed the rims the only reason to vent tires is so that they are not bouncy because air becomes trapped in sealed wheels.

    • @AJJAMStudios
      @AJJAMStudios  Před 2 lety +1

      Not true. The tires expand under power and draw in more air to compensate. The venting prevents distortion during wheel spin. That’s why they vent the wheels, but venting the wheels traps debris inside the tires.

    • @surfside75
      @surfside75 Před 2 lety

      @@AJJAMStudios AJ, I just hadn't found that with my builds. (Scratch build Mojave show truck. stock/mod Mojave basher. Baja Rey custom and a Baja Rey basher with ups.)
      When I use sealed tires on sealed rims, the tires don't breath AT ALL, and my rigs bounce around on the "trapped air" inside the tires. Once I vent the tires, that bouncy behavior is gone and the tires are able to take a landing load without bouncing my rig into the bushes.
      -but to each his own and just Bash On!😁

    • @AJJAMStudios
      @AJJAMStudios  Před 2 lety +2

      You are not wrong about the trapped air, but both points of view have merit. However, on bigger tires, like the Xmaxx, this phenomenon is very noticeable. The trapped air cannot expand as needed and the tires distort a lot. This I’ve seen first hand. Venting the tires does two things, it lets the tires breathe and allows debris to exit under power. Awesome discussion. Love it. Thanks for the comment. 😎👍

    • @AJJAMStudios

      It really is two different worlds. The Xmaxx is huge and fast, this is true. And if you need that experience the Xmaxx is your car. However, for scale realism and control the UDR is the one. The issue here is, I do not have an E Revo so I can’t talk about the durability all I can talk about is styling handling and basic components. • @AJJAMStudios
      @AJJAMStudios  Před 11 měsíci +1

      It still comes down to, do you like scale or performance? The UDR is awesome to see run in it's proper environment, but not overly versatile. On the other hand, the Mojave is a much better performer all around. They are not the same at all. The Mojave is tough and super fast on 6s. The UDR is fast too, so there's that. If I had to pick one it would be the Mojave. Keep in mind, durability is a thing, and being able to control an RC directly affects this issue. If bashing is your thing, and you have a decent skill set, then the Mojave should do fine. PS, I love mine! To be fair...I love my UDR too. But if I had to own only one of them...it would be the Mojave all day long. Thanks for asking.

    I'd u seal the inside without venting the outside. How could debris even get into the tire to begin with. What does venting do to the performance?

    • @AJJAMStudios
      @AJJAMStudios  Před 2 lety

      If you seal both the inside and the outside of the tires and wheels the vacuum created by velocity causes tire deformity which can adversely affect the tires and thus the handling of the vehicle. You can watch my Tire Venting 101 video and this anomaly is spelled out in great detail. Larger tires are more affected than smaller ones. Still, I understand your thoughts on the subject, for I once believed this as well. When a tire heats up and becomes more pliable, and add to that the vacuum added when the tires expand under load, you'll notice the affect in the handling, especially at high speeds. Plus, without venting the tires -which the manufacturers are now doing from the factory- the debris inside the tires, breaking down foam and such, has no place to go and sends the wheels out of balance. I hope this helps. AJ

    • @modzilla74
      @modzilla74 Před 2 lety

      Would u consider the sealed effect worse than than the traditional pizza cutter effect of vented tires? I haven't noticed a deformity with the wheels/tires I do have that are sealed or believed to be anyways. Can't be worse than a tire full of sand on one side of the tire while it tries to rattle your rc apart!! Lol. Brutal

      @AJJAMStudios  Před 2 lety

      In that case, I would ask; did you check out the video Tire Venting 101? I think it would answer many of your concerns. To answer your question, without tire venting the debris builds up inside the tires. This ruins the balance of the tire over time. With the vent holes the debris, including moisture, is ejected with each rotation preventing build up. This is why Arrma now ships their tires pre-vented. 😎👍

    Great video man, you earned my sub and like! I own 2 of these and I would like to share some of my issues so far. If you upgrade the wheels to aluminum, get some steel hexes from Traxxas. Several times my aluminum hexes would break the pin and get stuck. It makes the aluminum wheel MURDER to remove. The front driveshaft is plastic and will definitely fail, why they didn't install the dog-bone one they sell is beyond me. The rear shaft has given me several issues too.. MIP makes the best one for the UDR so far. These are pretty tough trucks but they are also scale so bashing it like an Xmaxx will not give you good results, at least in my experiences. My friends all talk about how much they hate my UDR but when the controller comes out, they all want to drive it! One more option I am gonna try is a slip diff in the rear. I think it will make it waaay easier to drive. The locked diff makes it a cookie monster! Thanks for the video and keep it up!
