- Rory McIlroy the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool to become the third Northern Irish winner after Fred Daly, also at Hoylake in 1947, and Darren Clarke (2011).
At 25 years and 77 days, McIlroy was the third-youngest player to achieve the third leg of the modern Grand Slam at the time, after Jack Nicklaus (23 years, 181 days) and Woods (24 years, 171 days). He was also the seventh player to lead outright after every round.

Here in year 2014 Rory overcame his mental barrier for the last time..its just hard to believe he dominated golf well over 10 years and didn't win Major in 10years now..he easily should have 15

I'm really hungry to see Rory start winning major championships again.
Same! He's my favorite player by far, mainly because he's so classy, professional, honest, and strangely humble. He's so different than, say, Brooks Koepka or Dustin Johnson, who seem to take pride in being unintelligent and disrespectful of anyone or anything that doesn't directly benefit them. I really like Bryson Dechambeau as well, because he's an original, plus he gets relentlessly bullied by the Koepka/Johnson crowd because he's so much smarter and good-hearted than they are. But Rory will always be my fave.

Rory has a beautiful swing!! Young and full of talent and skill. Exciting to watch. My home course is tough to play, fairway has rocks everywhere, blind fairways, extreme doglegs, and always windy. This reminds me of where I play. Fun though, Sergio played some marvelous golf, his putting was elite. And so did Ricky Flower.
Watching this makes me hope that Rory can make it through this tumultuous stretch he's been on the last few years. The game of golf badly needs it's next supreme Champion! And European fans yearn for a golfer to surpass the likes of Sir Nick Faldo & Seve Ballesteros. I still think Rory McIlroy has what it takes to do it. Love watching these past Open Championships back again!

Played there in 1987, nothing like Royal Birkdale with its huge dunes, Hoylake is very flat and shares the land with with a racecourse.
But I putted my head off and got around in 75 with a 35 on the back 9...my best score on the “open” courses....at that stage Hoylake wasn’t on the rota.

Amazing how good Scott played in The Open 2012-15 and couldn't secure the win. He was brilliant this week when Rory won but the draw bias was massive, not much you can do about that at The Open some years.
