  • Hugely entertaining documentary, broadcast 31st December 1984 on BBC 2, about The Phil Silvers Show, aka just "Bilko". Includes numerous clips from various episodes and excerpts of interviews with the late, great, Phil Silvers.
... Narrated by the late, great, Kenneth Williams. They of course worked together in 1967's "Carry On ... Follow That Camel", Phil Silvers replacing Sid James who was recovering from a heart attack.
    ... In 3 parts.
    ... RIP. Kenneth Williams (22 February 1926 - 15 April 1988) and Phil Silvers (11 May 1911 - 1 November 1985)

Phil Silvers had his schtick, which was the fast-talking conman, and he perfected it and performed it like no one else. Bilko took full advantage of that, which is why he'll always be Bilko. A brilliant performer and a wonderful source of laughter.

Phil Silvers was a comic genius. The Phil Silvers Show is an all time classic. He was the best con man, smooth talker, with larceny in his heart & mind at all times.

Sergeant Skinner went on to be the trail boss in "Rawhide".

The guy playing Bilko is/was Eric Fleming, Gil Favour of Rawhide' series; ( Clint Eastwood, Rowdy Yates, was his sidekick.) Later, Favor was drowned whilst filming a scene, age just 41.

Williams was an Interesting choice to narrate this when you consider what he said about Silvers in his diaries!

They were together in Carry On Follow that Camel, Phil got paid around £30000 whereas Kenny only £4000, Phil used to tell stories about his times in vaudeville to entertain the cast, Kenny got rather jealous as he thought it was his job to be the centre of attention all the time, I believe Phil had just gone through a painful divorce & confided in Kenny but he didn't want to know about it, I am afraid Kenny's ego spoiled the relationship...

I like Phil Silvers a lot, but in terms of being a raconteur, highly intelligent, charismatic, adaptable and genius he is about a 3/10. Kenneth Williams, however, is a 10/10.
