This video will show you how to change the engine air filter on a Toyota Rav4 2019, 2020, 2021. This video was filmed on the new 2019 Toyota Rav4 LE AWD with a 2.5L 4 cylinder engine. The process will be very similar or the same in future years of the Rav4. The engine air filter is very easy to change and it will save you money over taking your Rav4 to the Toyota dealership.

I had to take off the large rubber hose attached to the air filter housing as otherwise you could not lift the housing up enough to get the air filter out. This was on a 2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE

I have to tell everyone that it isn't as easy as it seems with these newer model cars. They use to be super easy. What he said is true but to save everyone headaches, here's an easier tip:
Those two integrated "holes" in the back of the air box where the cover slides into, they're a pain to get back on once the filter is in place. What I do is align and hold the filter with two hands upwards towards the air box cover, then slide the two notches through the holes. Then the filter will drop into the bottom allowing you to ensure a secure seal once the cover is snapped back on.
If you don't do it this way, it's a lot of wiggling and pushing around until the cover is over the filter completely all while securing it into the two back holes of the bottom piece of the air box. Those holes is the main reason why it's a pain to get on. Not necessarily to take off. Taking things apart is easy. It's putting it back together is the challenge
Another optional step you can do is take off that wiring harness from the MAF and the air box itself. Those clips are easy use clips where all you do is with your thumb, you press on the release clip, they slide right off. Very easy. This will allow the air box cover to have complete freedom to lift up and away from the bottom half, allowing a much more fuller access to the air filter. The way he's doing it in the video, it's fine too but it's a tight squeeze and uses a lot more strength having to tilt it just to get to the filter. You can see the "scrunch" of the air intake tubing. That's how much force is needed to pull the cover away, just to access the filter. Pretty crappy if you ask me. But it'll work too. Just

I love instructional videos like this one; a definite boost of confidence and a save on money to boot. Our host did not unclip the wire harness on the cover; I found it easier to do that and more the cover out of the way. You still need to hold the cover with one hand and reach for the filter with the other. The filter is not square so make sure to align it properly. If it feels like you are forcing the filter in or closing the cover take a step back and recheck everything.

I can’t believe I just paid $50 for Toyota to do this for me before watching this video 😤
Well a decent filter is $20, and it took me 15 minutes and some cursing to install it. So all in all, you maybe payed a bit more to not get angry at your rav4 lol
Not worth it asking dealership to do this stuff. I only get the oil changes done by a dealership as its messy

@@aldoraine9949 air filter is 10$. You just have to open a compartment and put the filter. Its not a 40$ labor job.
@@cogs11 filter is 27 at dealer 22 at ebay before taxes. This is for the oem one, so 50 bucks with filter at the dealer not bad, I do install it myself though, but for people who dont like messing around 50 not bad

Just changed mine today. Took about 5 minutes. Newer models have a cable that goes over the cover. But the cable can be removed easily. It has 3 clips and after they are removed you can easily access the engine air filter

Toyota wanted to charge me over $100 to do this. 😂
I had to undo those clips on the top too and it was really hard to get it out. I’m trying to replace it with a k and n filter. My Camry was a lot easier.

helpful video. Toyotas are excellent vehicles, but poor engineering w/ such a frequently accessed spot. I had to push, HARD to pry enough space to slide in the filter. thought I was going to rupture a hose or 2. shoved it in like a pro
you do need a screw driver to disconnect the air intake hose

I have a 2017 Rav4 Hybrid and the air filter is different from the gas only models.
not the same in a 2021 too many wires to diconect .. they made it difficult
