I've seen thousands of Wing videos to learn this new sport and this is one the best so far. Congrats! I would suggest to make one explaining about the best Foil position in the the fin track for different sizes of board, ie: should we position forward or backward and what should be the leg position in the board when sailing...
Yes, your windsurf skill will help you learn the wing quickly. Start on a big board, learn the wing, then move to a high volume foil board. Wear vest and Helmut.
Hello Allan, I followed your pointers many years ago with primarily windsurfing. For 30 years I've windsurfed, kiteboarded, kite foiled and this year I'm finally going to start Winging. I'm 148 pounds and purchased a 99L board. I noticed at 140lbs you are on a 140L board? Wow. I hope I can do this. Excellent video
Amazing! This is what I've been looking for. Really helpful video with some great tips. I've shared it with a friend who's just starting and it'll save me teaching him!
Great instructions. I love your no nonsense, no pandering, not pushing your channel, fake love bullshit. Just get straight to the point instructions and advice. Thank you
Quality instruction as on your HST, Jibing with Alan Cadiz on Maui DVD. Excellent video tutorial!. Same hat, same voice. Older windsurfer learning to windsurf foil. This wing thing has caught my interest. Thanks for the tutorial.
What a great video what a great instructional video. Thank you so much for all the effort you put into that! "I'm trying to keep the camera dry" cracked me up! oh my gosh, you just put forth so much effort thank you very much!
One more comment. I agree with all the compliments below. Great camera work, great instruction, great natural instincts on how a beginner or skilled waterman/woman would make corrections, and great pointers. I have seen all the other videos out there , and yours is no question -- the best. Thanks again. ( I have background in Surfing, , skiing , waterskiing, sailing, skateboarding, wakeboarding, kite surfing, flying, gliding, soaring, etc etc- so its easy for me to learn, and I STILL see how your instruction would do so well for ANYONE whether or not they already have any of those skills).
Thank you for that very nice review. I truly appreciate it. I am unfortunately aware that rookies like me sometimes fail to see dangers in new sports. I torn my ligaments in big wave SUPing and years ago hurt my ankles with windsurfing straps. I think it would be useful to the extent that you have the opportunity to share with us good habits (apart from wearing an impact vest, helmet and wetsuit). I am particularly concerned with the foil itself. It seems that you jump leeward when you reach the shore which is probably a very good idea to keep the foil away from the sail but I am worried that the wind may bring the foil back onto you (has that ever happened?). Typically in windsurfing or surfing I would prefer to jump windward. Also, any tips for entering or exiting when there is a large shore break? Many thanks for sharing your experience.
Hey mate, I started wingfoiling not long ago with the same board. I'm having some trouble finding the best position for the mast on the foil track. Do you remember if you had to adjust much depending on wind conditions? Thanks
Thanks Alan, for that perfect video and all your efforts. Which kind of wing do you prefer? With a boom or a fully inflatable. And why? I'm gonna use it from a boat and getting rid of all hard stuff would be great.
A 55ft power boat. It has a bathing platform which is pretty convenient. Nevertheless a very limited space. I'm an old windsurfer and tried the past two years windsurfing from the boat. But rigging with mast, boom and all the other stuff is, due to wind and waves always problematic. So I'm looking for an alternative.
@@stefanknorsch Sounds nice. I like the boom because of my windsurfing background. The wing is the easy part. Your board and foil will be cumbersome. fortunately they break down for storage. But easier than a windsurfing kit.
Thanks for your answer and your advice. As I have also a long windsurfing background, starting back in 1981, I think I will opt for the boom. I saw you the last time in 1993 on Maui. Long time ago. 😂 Wish you all the best and thanks for your great contributions here on CZcams. 🙏🏻
In light wind, I think a reach because in light wind the further you head off the wind like a broad reach the lower you wind speed. Like an airplane, taking off into the wind increase your apparent wind speed. But there are other factors too, your foil size and ground swell direction. However this sport is still so new the rules and boundaries have not been set.
Alan Cadiz thanks 🙏👍. Personally I’ve been finding it helps to go broad reach to gain speed but not consistently and I’m still progressing and have very little success get foil up in less than say 15 knots which ever technique I try, even with big foil wings.
Sensational video, great tips...you are a natural teacher mate I’ve just purchased the duotone echo 5m, and still to decide on a board and foil? I’m coming from a slalom windsurf background, fine with switching feet, any recommendations for board size and matching fin? I don’t wish to regret that expensive decision. Feel I could get to a medium to advance level relatively quickly. Love your vids mate.
@@myphilippineslife1804 Thanks. I think you will end up on a board around 75-80 liters. although its possible to get up on a sinker you want a board that will float you as long as your moving ahead at the slowest speed. However it very difficult to learn on a near sinker board. Possible but slow. When you learned to windsurf the board was not on the same as your slalom board, correct? A good learning size for your weight? 110-140 liters? The fin, you mean Foil. Bigger is better for learning. Thats is the current thinking with this sport. Keep me posted on your progress.
Alan Cadiz thanks Alan. So when you say a smaller foil when more advanced, are the foil parts swappable? (Trying to save some cash!) ....as 2 boards looks the likely biggest outlay over time. Yeah, I learnt on a 135ltr free ride board, then ended up on a 99 free ride. But My slalom racer is 116, really stable, fast.
@@myphilippineslife1804 Most brands the components are swappable but confirm that before you buy. Is reselling your learning board an option in your area?
Suggestion ... video about starting to turn, in taxi mode but powered. Most video, if so, show turning when on your knees or when standing up but stationary turning the board with your feet a d then powering up again. Most jump to turns when already being able to be on foil. Also most only show the jibe but when beginner you don't want to loose ground each time when turning. Lucky I now manage to go upwind (most of the time) but when I fall and need to get back on the board, find balance, flip over the wing, and by doing so I loose too much ground.
Thanks, Alan. You’re videos are really appreciated. BTW, I ran an International Windsurfer Sailing School back in the 70’s. The dry land trainer we used then (a truncated windsurfer mounted on a rotating base) works great for teaching wing and board handling skills, turns jibes, etc. on dry land. Aloha, Joe

Sheet out or luff the wing to depower.
Aloha, Joe
Is this the coolest old guy alive?
Hey Alan.... is there a one stop surf/kite shop which can sell me everything or help me order everthing? if so can you please pass on the link?
Great tips but seeing the leash under your foot the entire time was driving me nuts.
Lol, yes me to when I was editing this part. I apparently did not notice while filming.
