I’ve been doing everything with 16oz gloves since I was 14. I’ve always been a big guy with big hands. Whenever I use anything lighter I definitely feel the power but I actually get more fatigued since I throw more. I feel like since I’ve used a 16oz for so long my muscles are just conditioned to not feel the strain.

@@SlopeShredder29 If you're going to a gym and only getting one pair, yes. Even if your gym allows 14oz, your opponent will appreciate the 16oz. If you're getting two, then obviously you can go a bit lighter for bag/pad work.

With a gender difference or size difference of 20 lbs or more, or when sparring not at full force, lighter gloves are fine. Also the cushioning matters more than the weight in sparring for injury. Those who say that, don't fully understand training. Competition weight gloves or two ounces above competition weight should be used for any speed punching workouts or sparring, to get maximum speed potential results and be used to punching in those gloves for a match. Heavier gloves should be used for power punch workouts on the bag because it's the only way to throw full power at a heavy bag and the best way to get full power potential results.

Hit harder then you will feel it. I’ve packed the SH1T out of my smash bag and long heavy bag myself so it’s got more sand than usual.
Got Heavy hotter Rival gloves there is no tag on them but I’ve weighed them they are 17oz. I wear wraps and when I hit the bag, just like George foreman or Mike Tyson, hit the bag with BAD intention, I try and pop my shoulders out when I hit the heavy bag. Fractured both my wrists have the knuckle wraps have blood seep’s from the material from hitting the bag, that’s with the wrap and gloves on.
Forget about weight focus on speed and foot movements and keeping your tempo to avoid punches, have a punch sequence system in your head.
What’s the point if you can kick a football/soccer ball really hard if you can’t kick it accurately and dribble past players. Same with hitting the bag!

My gym insists on 16oz, it makes sense, you're trying to built technique and lighter gloves will cover up flaws that 16s wont, especially in terms of balance. Another benefit is if you are to get into a real fight your power is going to be much more substantial coming from a heavier glove. Although, thinking of possible advantages of Lighter gloves the faster movement might help train your fight IQ and reaction times better than heavier gloves. I would say training with both would be a good practice.

    • @nate8965

I would argue that lighter gloves hide flaws way less, with big pillowy gloves you’ll never feel the feedback in your punch and whether or not you’re hitting the target properly.

Ive got a pair of 10oz as my first glove and having knuckle issues with them. I started boxing with a friend holding pads and from the first session I was smashing the mitts as hard as I could and I’ve got sore knuckles since. Hopefully it’s because I was going hard without breaking them in first (rival leather gloves) and they get softer and broken in as I don’t want to pay for another pair. If I do have to get another pair I’m going to go with some 12oz winning clones as I heard the real winnings are protective pillow gloves lol.
