    Little story,
    In 1993 My dad had a very early build (in 1st 6 months of production) mk1 Mondeo 1.6 16v LX 4 door in Cayman blue metallic (K161XFD).
    He had the car from brand new towards the end of june 1993 if my memory serves me correct.
    In my dads first month of ownership i will always remember as a 16yr old lad, my dad clocked up nearly 2k miles in 2 weeks being on holiday in st'ives Cornwall, and i will always remember going along st'ives harbour front, quite a few people were looking at it because there wasnt many about at the time and it was a big thing back then going from the "jelly-mould" sierra.
    Upon first day of the summer holiday one young lad i over-heard in passing saying to his dad "ohh wow dad look... Thats the new mondeo" right outside the R.N.L.I lifeboat house, what is now a restaurant.
    I tried my luck to find/search for the car years later to see if it may have been still around but had no luck as it no longer exists, im 45yrs old now and i still kick myself that i didnt search for it sooner.
    My father passed away in 1995 2yrs later..
    Both the car and dad have Gone but never forgotten.
    R.I.P dad 1944-1995

As to the Mondeo itself, it is sad it’s at the end of it’s lifecycle. Tastes have changed. An estate such as the subject is not even carried by Ford in New Zealand. Effectively the MK5 did have the 2.0 ecoboost from the Focus ST - the 240ps but not enough people wanted them. You could just go and finance a BMW 430i or similar despite a Vignale spec objectively offering better spec and the styling looking fantastic. SUVs were what took away remaining family buyers so sadly the Mondeo was left alone. The remaining Mondeo enthusiasts are still running MK4s they’re so damn reliable. A good friend of mine has had multiple versions over time. He's a biker so has this type of vehicle as a utility work horse. There is nothing flash about them but they are reliable and get the job done. He always buys an older model as he does few miles each year. I picked up a demo Mondeo from a Ford dealer last year, a black liftback 2020 model in ST-Line trim. It has the 8 speed with the 2 liter diesel (190 hp). It’s just so wonderful to drive, I have owned a manual ‘07 Mondeo Ghia before and also a ‘16 Mondeo Vignale with the PowerShift automatic. Both were incredible cars in their own way. I owned an ‘15 EB Mustang after that but it just wasn’t what I expected. Too much of a headache actually, and I missed the luxury of the Vignale. So I decided like you said to pick up an almost new Mondeo in a sporty trim before it’s too late. Because it’s the end of and era, and not just for the Mondeo. Unfortunately its just the first victim of many. It’s so economical I can easily do +1000 km’s on the highway with a tank, and it’s like sitting inside your living room! Even tho I picked the “biggest engine” available in the EU, it’s not a rocket ship. But it doesn’t need to be that. It’s really clean, economical, very quiet and refined. I can really tell the difference between my 2 previously owned Mondeos and this one, they had the 2.0 PSA DW engine, which is also a good and reliable engine but it’s not really quiet since it has that familiar diesel noise. Ford did a good job on the EcoBlue, I know a guy that worked as a mechanic in a Citroën dealership and he could tell by listening to the engines of Transits/Mondeos if it had the PSA DW in it or the EcoBlue. According to him it was that much of a difference. My only complaint about my car is that I couldn’t pick the 240 hp bi-turbo diesel from the Edge. That would’ve made the car perfect for me.

    They are gorgeous looking cars, maybe the best in the segment, even after 6 or so years. I always thought they looked kind of like a 5-door hatchback Mustang. What is wrong with people? SUVs... makes my blood boil to think that those things are killing off cars like this. It's like everyone's senses of aesthetics have gone completely out of the window in the last 10-15 years.
    The thing letting down this generation is purely the lack of any exciting engines. I briefly considered buying one - if the old 5-pot had been carried over, or a nice V6, especially with that 4x4 system, it would have been a different story for me. Having said that, I'll be keeping an eye out for a nice Vignale when they get cheap in 10 years time...

    • @BoeingvsAirbus1578
      @BoeingvsAirbus1578 Před 2 lety +1

      I agree they could have had more powerful engines in the form of an ST version. The 2.7 V6 Ecoboost or even the 2.3 Ecoboost would have worked well at about 300+ bhp. There is the 2.0 Ecoboost 240 available though in Vignale spec

    I had a 55 plate petrol 2.0 Ghia X, bought new & kept for 13 years & 90k miles until it went in part ex for the wife's Fiesta Vignale. In that time I had 2 coil springs break on me but otherwise no mechanical or electrical problems & a regular return of 35-40 mpg. It was an excellent car to drive & so reliable, it felt like it was on rails at times & had such positive feedback through the steering wheel that you always knew the road conditions. My favourite memory was driving from Barrow in Furness to Sunderland in just under 2 hours, on one stretch bouncing off the rev limiter in 5th with the speedo showing 140 & the sat nav 135mph. God I miss her!

    Despite much adverse comment bordering on sneering from the professional commentators I bought my third Mondeo in the hybrid version five years ago. It's turned out to be the best car I've ever had. The hybrid Mondeo isn't a "performance" car but that was never my thing anyway. If you treat it gently it'll reward you with the smoothest, quietest, calmest ride you've ever had.
    I've lost count of the number of people who admired my Mondeo but didn't know that the hybrid version existed.
    Most of my driving is on out of town single carriageway A roads and on motorways only when it's unavoidable. My summertime fuel consumption is just over 60mpg based on actual fuel used and actual distance travelled. In winter the fuel consumption can fall to 50mpg. I've just done 700 miles before refuelling but that's exceptional. However I hardly ever "floor it" and I drive to the hybrid's strengths.
    You ask why no one is buying the Mondeo. As you point out, one reason is that the fashion has changed in favour of SUVs. There is still a market for larger cars but it seems to have been cornered by the more expensive German brands which in some regards are inferior to the Mondeo. So I think the main reason for the Mondeo's demise is SNOBBERY.

Sadly for me once I passed my driving test the pandemic hit and prices of cars went through the roof especially with petrol and the cost of living going up and I can't afford one sadly. It's upsetting for me because I've loved the Mondeo and I'm not a fan of Ford SUVs nor any others. You are going to like it. I bought a second hand 69 reg for taxi use. No regrets. Transmission is strange if you never experienced toyota hybrids. But this type of planetary transmission. (Ecvt) is the most reliable transmission you can have. In toyota hybrids it never goes wrong. It is the same system that gen3 toyota prius has. Actually Ford and Toyota started to develop this system together in the 90’s. Ford pulled out for some reason and later bought the patent from toyota.

    Nice video! I recently did a discussion video of the Ford Mondeo, talking about its discontinuation in the EU market. I have mixed feelings about this development, a part of me feels like its a terrible decision because the Modeo is a legendary Ford Model that has been with Ford since the 1990s.
    But then on the other hand I guess its a good decision by Ford because in the EU market, there now a high demand for electric cars and hybrids, and the D-segment (the Mondeo, VW Passat, etc..) is losing that demand.

    There was a 2.0L 240PS variant in the old mondeo shape and an ecoboost version in the new shape, however only in automatic with perhaps the same style transmission as the mustang which can be a bit slow to react to acceleration etc. That's the closest we've had to a modern Mondeo ST but probably tons better than this and the diesel variants, and Vignale styling isn't for me. It sucks that the Mondeo is being discontinued but I think we've seen it coming for a few years due to lack of demand and the market being much more focused on SUVs, sports hatchbacks and EVs. Maybe they'll revive the mondeo with a fully electric version in the future which could be really nice

    I've been lucky enough to drive a number of the MK5's as company cars, from ST-LINE Diesels to hybrid vignale's. They are very good cars and thought a number of times of buying one. But I'm into my performance cars, and that's where the Mondeo falls down in the market in my opinion. It's just a shame we never saw another ST model after the MK3. If Ford did a final goodbye run by doing a MK5 ST with the 2.3L from the current Focus ST, then I would be straight down the dealers with my deposit.

    • @CarFocused
      @CarFocused  Před 3 lety

      Yep no idea why they didn’t sling the 2.3L Ecoboost in there like they did with the Mustang. In fact, they should have used it in the Mondeo instead, and stuck an ST badge on the back - and not even bothered with the Ecoboost Mustang (which was a flop)
