- This is a horrible cover of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb. It was performed by a band at a local music store during a breast cancer awareness show. I'm sorry to the guys, whoever they are, but this is awful. And these guys aren't 12 year old music students... they're grown men who ought to know better.
The bass player is so good that he's not bound by the constraints of rhythm.

They're actually really, really good, it's just that they had a massive head-on accident on the way to the gig and they all forgot which instruments they played. The guy who is singing is actually the bassist, the bassist is actually the guitarist, and the guitarist is the guy who was driving the other car.

I have watched this over and over again over 10 years and I think I have finally worked it out... and its Brilliant.
They are all playing different Versions of Comfortably Numb.
The singer is doing an old demo version
The bass player is doing the album version
The lead guitarist is doing the live version from Is There Anybody Out There .. but he is playing it backwards
The rhythm guitarist is doing the Live 8 version (but as there was no rhythm at that gig, he is doing it quietly)
The drummer is brilliant, he is counting 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2 out loud for the rest of the band
The keyboard player is the issue here. He used to be in a Beatles tribute band, and he is actually playing Eleanor Rigby.

I think the worst part of this whole thing is actually the drummer’s ride cymbal. Every time he hit it with the stick, I could feel my brain cells dying in real time.

As a former bass player I thought about picking it up again, but after witnessing this brilliant performance and how advanced bass playing has become it's just better to let it keep collecting dust. It's too late in life to try and comprehend that very complicated time signature and to hit the notes out in space like that. Color me impressed!!!

Actually I'm not sure if you people are joking. This band is one of my favorite Avant-Garde-style Prog Rock bands. Notice how they manage to stay close with the polyrhythmics (the guitarist plays a quarter note before the bassist and changes to higher tempo in the solo, the drummer and rhythm guitarist play in 7/8 and 9/8 for each two bars, etc), and every bar the time signature changes (4/4 in the first bar but then suddenly 15/16, 5/4, 33/32, 13/16 and so on, respectively). The singer also adds psychedelia to the song by singing also the delay vocals. The backing vocals in the second verse are changed to make fascinating dissonance with the dominant key. Also notice that the drummer uses only the ride cymbal throughout the song, which shows his technical virtuoso abilities. After the solo, the singer modulates his singing 3/4-step up, which makes reference to arab music, but the band stays the same. Truly, I find these guys so pioneering, they're like 20 years ahead of their time.

This is what happens when everyone is trying to follow everyone else. The Guitarist is trying to follow the vocalist, the bass player is trying to follow the drummer, the drummer is trying to follow the guitarist and the vocalist doesn't know what the shits is going on. Brilliant!

When I was in 4th grade I joined my Elementary School band... I spent the first year bouncing around starting w/the violin (hated it), then the sax and then the trombone. I wanted to quit but the music teacher Mrs. Lawrence wouldn't let me, she kept moving me around because she saw something in me that I didn't.
The next year in 5th grade I was thrust into the percussion section. I started on the cymbal, then the bass drum and halfway through the school year the 6th grader who was the snare player moved and I was given the job w/a recital a month away.
The following year in 6th grade we went to a music competition involving reading, rudimentary skills and time keeping. I beat 4 snare players who were in the Concord High School Blue Devils Marching Band (Concord, CA).
On my WORST DAY I kept better time than this drummer does.
+Will E-S They probably practiced by playing with the album version. Each of them know they're supposed to follow something. People do this with singing as well. Without the song to remind them what the next verse is, people forget the words.
