Our Second Cousin looks at how pessimism can positively benefit an artist's practice by providing motivation, depth and complexity to their work, authenticity, and encouraging creative exploration.
As an artist, I often struggle to balance being pessimistic and optimistic when it comes to writing. As an actor, finding the beauty in everything is something I try to find against the darkness that other people would focus on. This video kind of feels like a subconscious or late-night thought and I am enthralled with it. The framing on this and the shots are amazing, even the ratio is giving a sort of 90s vibe. I don't usually comment, but I just had to write this.
i wholeheartedly relate to the first two sentences. in writing it's hard to find the line where being pessimistic or optimistic stops being an advantage and just becomes a nuisance, if that makes sense. while in acting you have to embrace a character for their flaws whether that's fully having a pessimist or optimist mindset because its the beauty of who the character is.
Jamie really out did himself with the cinematography in this video. Every shot is super satisfying to soak in and ironically each shot serves as a sort of ‘blank canvas’ for his words to sink into. Whether the environment he films are busy or barren, there’s somehow a synergetic flow that kind of brings it all together.
He’s so clever man even the details of the imagery at the end when he goes “they need to be someone who was once in the darkness but through their work went into the light.” As he walks out of that dark area of the frame to further outside on the path.
Your take on the role of pessimism as a pushing force that provides the artist with the need to create art is quite relatable. I agree that objectively pessimism isn't a very pleasant type of outlook to have, but at the same time lots of beautiful things exist now because a person out there was a pessimist that needed to express itself to feel understood by the outside world. This feeling of dissatisfaction and discomfort with reality is why we have artists in this world which ironically make it a more comfortable and beautiful place.
Hey Jamie as someone who has watched all your videos and attends every Saturday I can’t help but say I am so EXCITED to watch this video with the community you have built
Very beautiful film as an pessimistic myself I’m unfortunately not an artist in anyway so my negativity only brings me failures ,depression and that numb feeling that things are completely out of control. Doesn’t matter how many times I create an imaginary space around me with positivity and beauty it always fall down because I can’t always be in this space
I was so intrigued with the title of this video, as I usually am with most of Jamie's videos. But then he explained what Tom Cruise In A Supermarket means and I had like a "Wow" moment. He's insanely clever and his way of thinking is extremely stunning.
been feeling so shit about myself and the world lately. i really needed this video rn it was like a reminder to keep working towards acting. thank you Jamie Flatters youre epic 💯
this might be my new favorite video, i’ll probably rewatch it several times for inspiration. thank you for putting art out there every week, makes me see the world differently every time. btw i just love the way this was shot SO CREATIVE
I find it truly fascinating how you speak about Pessimism, I mean I personally have never thought of it that deeply, but it's good, that you bring that up
I love your outlook and way of thinking, each of your videos has such a deep meaning and a certain thought that makes you think about life in general. You inspire me with your art and creativity. I became your fan after Avatar and I love your acting and Neteyam is my favorite character🙈
Same here. Jamie, You are a great-great talented. I really like how you played Neteyam, very strong performance and you were very cool as Tedros, but perhaps you gave the most versatile performance as Will Sinclair. I really like your acting and your videos.
i thank you for this, i felt it in my soul. it reminds me of the fugees lyric that goes “I felt he'd found my letters and read each one out loud” i only look forward to sundays now
I agree with everything you said in the video. Looking at it from a positive perspective, pessimism can serve as inspiration to create art of all kinds. Many of my favorite artists focus on negative, painful experiences and use suffering to compose songs, paint, and write poems, and any art form that allows them to express and portray their feelings. Moreover, as art receivers, we can connect with these emotions and relate them to experiences that we have lived or are living, allowing both the artist and receivers to heal the wounds that these experiences may have caused. You feel less lonely knowing that someone is going or went through something similar, so it makes a difference. Personally, I consider myself a pessimist. I always think about the negative aspects of everything in life. However, you made me put into perspective the transformation of pessimistic thoughts into positive ones. This is now my favorite video of yours. Thank you for sharing.🤍
It was like I’ve talked with my spiritual friend. As a poet i consider this video a vivid example of my own thoughts and conversations with myself. Talking about pessimism and optimism, I just loved the idea that in pessimism art is created (‘cause it’s tru, I only write my best poems when I feel like shit and think of myself the same). Sooo, thank you, Jamie. Your art is amazing and inspiring!
I can’t contain my excitement for this new video! I can’t wait to watch it and see what amazing content you’ve come up with. Keep up the amazing work, I’ll be eagerly waiting for your new masterpiece!! 😊
“This idea of wanting to almost suffer sufficiently, so every pain has been worth something; every pain, every sort of irritated mental state, every trauma, every natural accident, it could all be used as input energy into something beautiful. You can use the negativity and transcend it’s misery and form it into artwork. That’s the alchemy that art allows.” Wow. Just wow.
love the idea of being critical of yourself, but not the world around you...but not in a self deprecating way. in a productive way that makes you challenge yourself in relation to the world around you. this is a really great video
it’s so brilliant to classify pessimism as a tool for the arts. i personally find myself creating my best works when it revolves around the loss of loved ones, insecurities, and general experiences that which pains me to verbalize aloud. to have these sort of gloom-ridden ‘issues’ somehow inspires me to create more, and whether it’s because i wish to be understood or to make others feel understood, pessimism adds a true essence of realism that individualizes and unites all. this video perfectly illustrates this tugging war artists experience, and i’m so glad to have watched it all the way through, as i came out of this piece feeling much too understood and heard. it’s beautiful, Jamie. thank you
(3:25) ur video reminded me of a quote i learned in my philosophy class. it was from Socrates saying "its better to know what we dont know that to not know we dont know it" (at least thats how i took it as lol) in the way that the wanting to know more makes us learn and create more but idk :)
thanks for putting my thoughts and notions into words jamie, i’ve had these same ideas flying around in my dumb ass mind and you just landed all and every one of them in this amazing visualization, i’m sure all your subs are deeply grateful you’re able to share your art with us, thank you truly.❤
"The artist should be critical about themselves, but they should always be blindly optimistic about the world" e eu aqui sempre esperando o pior do mundo e criticando qualquer arte que eu produzo. Quebrando completamente a expectativa
When stress comes from repetitive activities, I realize that I am not an introvert because of it (I need freedom), but I also realize that I will get stressed when I spend too much time outside interacting with a lot of people. Sometimes, I think, if only I were a man, it would probably be easier. 🗿
Your life path is 7 Jamie. I advise you to be interested in numerology ! Because the description reminds me a lot of you : INTROSPECTIVE ; ANALYTICAL KNOWLEDGE SEEKERS ; PHILOSOPHICAL ; SECRETIVE ; and you may also be introvert. I say that as if I knew you personally lol
I watch his videos every Sunday like it’s church..

I love art because there is no wrong answer. It’s unique, one of a kind. And art agrees with you.
So poetic and beautiful, I agree ❤
