The Pond On My Window Sill - Ecosphere Week 1

  • Last week, I scooped a jar of muddy water and weed out of a local pond, sealed it and placed it on my north facing window sill, in an experiment to create a sealed ecosphere.
Let's have a look at some of the things I saw in there during the first week...

I never saw one either under the microscope. We looked at pond water with water fleas and such and we looked at onion and tomato cells. That's what really got me hooked up and ignited my love for biology. Sadly in school the microscope time was very limited. At University I then was able to work with the microscope again. Then met bacteria and viruses under the microscope and body cells. I loved to sit for hours in dark and quiet rooms, just to examinate my probe under the microscope and take notes about it and experiment with it.
Up to this day, using the microscope always gets me hyped up. I love looking at things under the microscope. This tiny world of unseen things. It's just amazing.

When I was in primary school back in the late 1950s, my favourite subject was Nature Studies (primary school science). We performed an experiment similar to this. We boiled up a handful of grass to form a nutrient soup. When it cooled, we inoculated it with an eyedropper full of water from a puddle after rain. Each day we took a drop and examined it under a microscope. After a few days we observed micro organisms in the drop. As the days rolled on the population grew and grew until it was teeming with micro organisms. I was fascinated.
As the days rolled on the population began to subside, until eventually they died out to the point that we could no longer see any. When the resources were exhausted, the dense population could no longer be sustained. I presumed a subset of the organisms continued in the soup. This has stuck with me all my life, and I took it as a good example of how a closed environment has limited resources. While not a perfect analogy of our planet, it does show what can happen when there are limited resources, and limited space for our waste.

This is horrifying and fascinating. The microscopic world freaks me out, and knowing that everything that is happening in that jar happens... well, everywhere... is disconcerting at best. Your presentation and earnest nature, though, is so calming and downright professional that I couldn't turn away. Very impressive.

My class did the same thing in elementary school. We took a field trip to the local lake & each of us got to take a jar of lake water home. I remember the teacher showed us a daphnia in a drop of water under the microscope & we could see its wriggling innards through its transparent body. I was amazed. Back at home with the jar, I was fascinated by the life enscapulated within its own small world. I even had a tiny fish that hid among the vegetation at the surface, much to my delight. But then my memory fails me. I'm not sure how long I had this jar or what happened to it. My parents probably threw it out. Maybe everything died beforehand. In any case, to this day I'm fascinated by life that exists in puddles & other microcosms. Thanks for the opportunity to relive my memories through this video.
