- What's In My Sound Bag? We examine all the items that go into a video sound bag and how they are used. We cover everything from audio signal routing to organization to audio power distribution. We also have a love affair with Velcro.
It's important when you are building a sound bag that you know how it's going to be used and what gear you need to get good audio for film. Audio needs are different for each project and sometimes you have to rebuild your bag depending on the project but these sound bag tips will help you review in your head the theory that goes into building an audio bag.
Battery distribution systems, boom and wireless input strategy, bag customization and more! This episode of Sound 101 is a good start for anyone who is interested in getting good audio and having a logical work flow in your sound bag. And it doesn't matter if you have the K Tek Stingray bag, the Zoom Audio bag, or even te Orca bag. The ideas that go into what it takes to build an audio bag are all the same and its all about how to get good audio.

What items did we forget to include that we should cover in future videos?
I can't find my comment asking for a detailed look at you sound bag😭 I would like to know how to get Stereo sound on my Sound Recorder It's a Tascam Dr40 or any other sound Recorder?
How would you do a budget IFB/Comtek setup for if the director or producer wants to listen to your mix? Thanks for the ideas!
I have the F8 and bag. I use the little zip pouch at the front to store Tentacle Sync and TC cables.
Good idea or bad idea?
how do you rig this bag and how do you transport it to the set?
@@Prion600 normally I might just send him straight the boom channel, or perhaps an automix of the lavs
Really nice look at your setup! How about comteks/IFB for a future video?
yes please, i would love a diy BDS system how to with a commponent list (especially feeding the deity connect system)... ps you know you could make and sell these online... great videos, thanks heaps
Excellent video! May I put in a request for a video for a DIY BDS?
Thanks in advance, Andy 😊
Awesome inside look at a sound bag (huge fan of customizing things to your needs too).
Definitely want to see a build video for the BDS!
Definitely wanna see this BDS build
Another late vote for DIY distribution box! It's cool and I want one.
Great video Andrew really enjoyed to see how you had your F8 set up.
Nice Setup!
I appreciate your efforts of explaining so intensively and extensively. I am following this channel from a couple of months and I honestly want to say that your videos are very very informative. I hope you will reach a million subscriptions very soon. Thank you very much.
Looks good
Nice bag man. I'd love to know more about Comteks please. When, why, what and how to use them? And how to fit them in my bag.
Comteks (or anything similar, Comtek is just one brand.... but they get often used in a generic sense like "Xerox" , "Taser", "Escalator" etc) is for whenever you want to feed audio to anybody
There are many reasons for this, common reasons being: director wanting to hear the performance, script supervisor to... supervise the script, cameraman to hear the actor's word to time his camera movement, clients to listen in, etc etc
Kind of like the Amazing Race boom video, I’d love to see the setup for audio on a big documentary, reality show, or even a big movie. When recording many channels of audio (ie 8+).
Hi. I really really love your videos. an idea for an upcomming video: Can you break down the Battery distibution system? :-)
Hey using the deity v mic D-3 amazing stuff now I want to take my audio to the next level with professional audio setup so can u plss make a detailed vedio on how to actually make it, what tools u need from the mixers to the boom pole all of em, Make a vedio that teaches me a noob everything i need to know i kinda depth for an on set boom set up for filamking
I’m a big fan of your videos. The diy BDS is awesome. I’ve made one as well, but want to have something like the PSC Triple Play so that I can have the option of ac power without unplugging my battery. Do you have any suggestions?
PFL is pre-fader, solo is post-fader.
PFL does not affect the master output but soloing a channel may do so.
Where do you store the transmitters when packing everything up?
Thanks for the videos! Just curious what kind of lavalier system you got going on there?
As a new location sound person, should I get a smaller sound bag like the single compartment Orca Or-27 sound bag or the larger dual compartment Orca Or-28? My setup is modest with a DR-70 recorder, a dual channel wireless lav kit and 2.4GHz Comtek type director's headset. As my skills grow, I expect I will upgrade my gear possibly to an F8. Smaller, slimmer Or-27 or the larger Or-28 I can grow into? The slimmer bag would meet my current needs.
Do I recall you talking about low profile right angle XLR connectors? What are they called and what brand/model?
For a low cost Comtek system you might want to check out the WMS02 wireless digital in ear monitor audio system. Less than $90 from China on Ebay for a transmitter/receiver pair and additional receivers are about $40. They work in the 2.4GHz range and have around 40 different frequency channels. They sound good and work well at reasonable distances but not through walls. I paired mine with $40 Sennheiser HD 100 on ear headphones. This system provides a lot of bang for the buck for a starter Comtek system.
Keep making videos, they are very informative.
What are you using to split audio for the mixer and the boom operator to both hear what is coming in via boom?
That 'Actually' count had me...
Andrew like me perhaps is a Pet Shop Boys fan from the 80s. Their 2nd album 'Actually' is consider their best work..
So in good company.
ur pin is bend on the power XLR :) or a lose pin of some sort since there are 4 pins.
You should give names of brand to everything thing you’re explaining about. Type of wireless… type of distribution power.
Does that zoom recorder have time code ? What sound devices would you compare that model to. Also what transited and receives are you using ?
I noticed you had something on your cart to hold xlr cables, what is that?
You should post links for the gear!
What power bank are you using?
Wich battery do u use? i want to get one but i cant find it(
interested to see that diy bds any reference or component close pictures u could share
Wish there were links
I'm pretty new to audio since I'm an editor. But one film I edited, the sound guy did this cool thing and I don't know how he did it. The take would start out normal, then it sounded like he would turn on his own lav mic temporarily to say the slate information eg. "1 Apple take 1" then it would shut off and the take would continue like normal. How did he do this? I want to add it to my bag! :)
the idea of the strap is to raise the recorder ... as you wanted :)
One of your powerpins was a little bent there.. (5 pin connector?)
That was the 1st thing I noticed as well!
how recording out noise floor with zoom f8n pro
I usually pick up small things in any video or photo, does this cable has a bent pin? 5:30
Hahaha no, that flat metal piece is apart of the grounding and also acts as a catch for the chassis screw on a Switchcraft XLR connector. The angle makes it look like it's on of the pins.
nice and easy setup , But how you are sticking the Velcro ? i tried wax ..it didn't work out ,,,are you using double face tape ?
He might be sticking it straight to the bag? As the inside of the Zoom bag is kinda fluffy
If you want temporary fix on the velcro tape, use double sided tape.
If you want anything permanent use super-glue or similar.
that actually counter should be going till the end 😅
Made it 28 seconds before the “actually” bell sound drove me crazy.
damn you got this actually problem even more then i had :) i got cured i think :) or hope
Would've been good to cover those little accessories you carry in your bag while on set
We did a video on that kind of stuff last month.
czcams.com/video/OHRYghKbAEc/video.html
@@DeityMicrophones not saying you haven't covered it! Just that it is a strange omission not to have in a "what is in my bag" video
Why not do Wireless 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 and then Boom Mic on 5?
No one would ever be confused.
why is the boom track not a track ? sseems like the most important track to me. then come track 2 3 4 5... not weird 1 is boom.
Actually, I have the same problem. =P
Hey, where did you find your bag and what’s the name of it?
That's the default bag from Zoom
@@DeityMicrophones thank you!
I vote that you try to start saying "hook and loop," unless you really do have a brand preference. I just think we all need to be better about identifying things by their real names, rather than one brand's name.
nice video. make lesson how to edit sound
Is this all you need?
To a certain degree yes. But this is just a glimpse a basic ENG bag setup. As soon as you get into a sound setup for a feature film you add a ton more.
He said "actually" another 10x but you didn't count it on the counter haha
can i get someone to make the bag for me?
SO what would this bag be ideal for ? @deity microphones
